Lump in throat / sore popping sternum

This all started over six months ago when I got a tooth pulled. Three or four days after I had a wisdom tooth pulled my tonsil became very red and I came down with a sore throat. I am not the kind of guy that like to go to the doctor so I toughed it out for a few weeks and when it did not clear up I went to the doc. The doctor gave me the quick once over and gave me a prescription of ciprofloxacin. This was my first time taking this antibiotic and I did not react well to this. I went back to the doctor and told him that I did not have a good reaction to this drug and he told me that I probably was allergic to this drug and prescribed leviquin. I did not have a good reaction to this drug either and started to do research on these drugs to find out that these two drugs are in the same family. I have lost all confidence in this doctor so I went to my allergist. My allergist gave me a 30 day prescription of amoxicillin and a cortisone shot. The amoxicillin did get rid of a sinus infection that I had but I am still carrying this uncomfortable lump in my throat and my sternum is sore and pops. My lungs are also tight and sore. I went back to my allergist and he thinks that it is my allergies. I have had allergies all my life and it has never felt this way in my throat/chest. I am a 35 year old man that is in good shape, eat well, and exercise regularly. I have only been on my bike once since this whole thing started and it was for a short ride and it took me to the ground. I do not like that I can't exercise the way I am accustom to. Every time I go to the doctor they take my blood pressure tell me it is perfect and give me allergy medicine and send me on my way. They have not performed any sort of test in my throat to see if I have an infection. Is there a chance that I have picked up an infection at the dentist and just haven't been able to get rid of it? Please help me with the next course of actions that I need to take to get well. I do not have insurance so I would like to quite this wild goose chase of spending my money unnecessarily. Thanks Greg

Without insurance, I can understand your reluctance to shell out unnecessary money, but at some point, you are going to need to see a good ENT and have that throat properly examined. He may need to scope it....use a fiberoptic scope for a closer look. The chest issue may not fall into the ENTs scope of practice, so you may need to see another specialist if a source of your symptoms is not found by the ENT. Do this in "steps"....It is not a wild goose chase, but medical providers do have to systematically search for the cause.

Not only did the doctor give you two drugs in the same class, he gave you the most expensive ones, so make sure that you declare, up front, to all doctors, that you do not have insurance and to PLEASE take it easy on you.

I don't think you picked up an infection from the dentist, but that is just a guess. If you do have sinusitis, the 30 days of amoxicillin should have helped.
