Things I hate most about going to the doctor...

It's a new year, and my work provides me sessions with a health coach. (Yep, I am lucky!)

The only downside is that part of my health coach's job is to steer me towards the right preventative care. So, time to schedule a bunch of doctor's appointments to get me on track.

I know it's best, but I HATE going to the doctor. How about you?

So, let's vent. Finish this sentence:

What I hate most about going to the doctor is _________________.

Can't wait to hear what you all have to say.

I definitely agree that the doctors need to be more patient and listen SO much better to what their patients are saying, and sometimes not saying. And for goodness sake, as a dr, if you don't know about something or can't figure out what is going on, don't just say it must not be anything and brush your patients off. Be honest and say, I have never seen anything like this before, but I will try to find out about it, or refer you to someone who may know. Or maybe, try everything known, doesn't even need to be proven, to try and figure it out!

And don't ignore symptoms we are feeling, we KNOW our own bodies, we know when something isn't right.

And yes, repeating the same things over to 2 or 3 different people is ANNOYING!!! Especially when none of them seem to really be listening anyways!

I could keep venting for hours on this subject!! But I'll stop there!

I go in with a list starting at the top with my biggest issues. Then I write out which scripts I might need. My peeve is I limit it to 3-5 things it depends on how bad I've been.He ignores part of the list.

In the last to years he has never reviewed any blood work, just copies me AND I have high un controlled BP and they don't always take my reading. The weight I just say every other time, I'll pass you see me ballooning up and nobody's checking why.

Ok so I have more then one. VENTING-sorry

Oh I am so glad for your response, I tend to get "tunnel vision" with these types of questions and hearing it from your point of view is a nice reminder that you are human too! LOL (no offense intended)
After reading through all the most recent replies I want to say that I'm very lucky I have the Dr I do! He does his best and respects my $$ limitations so only insists on the medically required tests etc each year.
I guess my ending to that sentence would have to be, what I hate most about going to the Dr is sitting in enclosed rooms where many times very sick people are breathing their germs in the air! My immune system is shot so I have developed a kind of OCD where germs are concerned!
Thanks again for your inside view, the older I get the more I understand that knowlege/education goes a long way to lessen my fears and angers and frustrations!

Is not being heard. I explain my symptoms and it seems if there is not a text book answer then I get the "well let's try this...."

Having them record my weight into their file.

For those who don't like to be weighed on the scale, just do what I do. Hold onto some helium balloons while on the scale. It softens the numbers a bit.

Its interesting reading everyone's responses here. So far it looks like dislikes are -

* Excessively long waits.
* Being weighed.
* Feeling like the physician is not listening.
* Poor customer service skills.

The vast majority of my doctors visits are positive experiences, but I have felt all of the above at one time or another.

What if Doctors made their living in tips, like a Server in a nice restaurant. Would that change the environment?

Being made to feel like you are wasting their time...on your symptoms/complaints.

Waiting. No one in the office - first appointment after lunch. Wait 10 minutes in the waiting room and another 15 in the examining room. Perhaps the doctor is returning call or making notes, but if I'm there, I should come before a phone call.

"Refuse the weight, Cathy.....I do it all of the time."

It's not just the weight, itself. It's the weight change and the direction of progress. Large, significant changes in weight, up or down, can indicate serious health problems like cardiovascular disease or diabetes...

You don't agree?

What I hate most about going to the doctor is the wait.

It sounds like I am extremly lucky. We do have to wait to see our Dr as well but she takes her time and truely listens to what I have to say. She has called me at home several times to follow up on something. I have been with my Dr. for 10 years and there are 7 of us that see her. She knows our family history. She has listened to me when I say something isn't "right" with one of the kids and works to find out what is wrong. She doesn't push tests that we don't need. She knows we are on a budget and will give us samples when possible and generic drugs if possible.

Now even though I like my Dr. I still need to go get some preventative care done. After all the kids go I just don't feel that I have time to take care of myselft. Getting all the checkups I need is my goal this year.

What I hate most about going to the doctor is getting wieghed. Lately I have been on so much prednisone that my weight seems to be the inching up even though I am trying to watch everything I eat. No matter what I try to do it seems like I am gaining weight. I have been on 60 mg of prednisone for 1 week and my doctor is very reluctant to taper the dose at a rate that is quick enough to get off in the near future. Ifeel so bloated and just awful.

them NOT listening to me. Why is it when I go in and say I have strep throat they will not confirm I am right they just hand me the antibiotics and send me on my way. WHY WON'T THEY LISTEN TO THE ONE PERSON WHO KNOWS MY BODY THE BEST!!??

Not only do you have to wait and wait and wait out in the reception room, they then take you back and there is our favourite friend the scale, - then they want to poke you with a damn needle for blood that will not come out. Then they politely shuffle you to and windowless room and say with the smile o there face, the Dr will be in in a minute, whose minute - there minutes are a lot longer than the sixty seconds in my book, then when he or she comes in they smile, ask how you are doing busy themselves with your file then they close the file and say see you next month you are doing great. The receptionist or assistant got it wrong, when she says he will be with you in a minute she is really saying, he only has a minute for the visit. I know that it does not truly happen like that but that is what it seems - I think the biggest thing I hate is the needle that they jab in your arm.

Thanks
