Should the government force you to have insurance?

Olivia_WebMD_Staff posted:
The Supreme Court is about to start its hearings regarding whether the new Health Care Reform law's requirement that all Americans buy some sort of health insurance or face a fine is constitutional.

What is your opinion? Should the government MAKE you have health insurance?

I agree! I know someone that just goes the the emergency room and say's let someone else pay the bill. Let's stop this practice that is the real culprit of our taxes!

The government needs to stay out of our personal business. This is suppose to be one of those things you should not have to discuss with the government. I understand doctors and hosiptals having the tech that interfaces with each other so you can know about a patenices background and meds., especially if the person can not speak for themself or whatever the concern maybe, but not the government. I guess now he'll tell us if we deserve a certain type of drug program or how I'm to old and don't need it.

Since your one of those who feel they shouldn't have to buy health insurance let me ask you this, say you have a heart attack and you need to go to the emergence room who should pay that? Me? My parents were in a similar situation when my stepfather had his heart attack, and they lost their house. It only paid part of the bill, the rest was paid buy people like me who have insurance.

Well your a piece of work! Health Insurance is an "Earned Privilege" huh....how exactly do you "Earn" that privilege? Do you, say work for a company for 60 years, do you job to the best of your ability, never come in late and be a model employee...does that earn you the "Health Insurance" award...oh but wait, the company wants to save money and your age group is more expensive to insure, so you just got fired and they replaced you with a 25 yr. old....I guess your not so "Privileged" anymore, you don't get health insurance anymore, so sad, too bad!

Having health insurance and the ability to pay for keeping yourself healthy and gain treatment for illness and disease is not some "Earned Privilege". The Privileged in this country have earned enough as it is.

Just because someone is poor, or they've been downsized, or the bottomed out economy has deleted their job, doesn't make them unworthy or having health insurance.

The last time I checked we were not a Communist Country were your "Earned Privileges" were metered out to the classes by a corrupt, over-control, power hungry Government.

Why don't you take a look at the Constitution....the principles and foundation that our Country were built on, should make Government supplied healthcare for EVERYONE a pretty easy thing for our screwed up Government to do....but they don't exactly remember what or why America became what it did in the first place. With all the crap that our Government supplies for other Countries spending billions of dollars every damn year, it could very well take care of it's own people and supply health care coverage at no cost or a very, very low cost...and you notice I say SUPPLY, not DEMAND, MANDATE or FORCE. America's Government has always had a little trouble taking care of it's own, but hey, we'll jump real quick to go save the rest of the world.

Maybe our so-called "Leaders" should take a look at Switzerlands health care system....as a Country, they've managed to take care of their citizens very well, maybe instead of always thinking we're so damn great and our answers can never be beat, we should look around at the people that just may have gotten it right.

"I Personally".. want to detach myself entirely.. from the Government. I want no part in this. Insurance companies.. today are the ones whom have the last say when a patient dies.. dependent upon how much or how little insurance you have. "Your Only As Good And Alive.. As Your Insurance Policy Provides For!" I know a woman whose husband was responding greatly with his chemo. The insurance cut him off then and there. He capped out at 30 grand. The insurance then told the doctor to end treatment. You can only live as long as your insurance policy goes up to. So.. if your poor your get a shorter life.. and the rich live the longest whom can afford the best policies and most expensive ones. Who is the Government to allow an uneven health care plan for the nation. This is not fair. It is like saying your poor you leave the earth first and there is not much use for you. Then the put this back on the insurance.. when none of the doctors are willing to get involved and fight to keep that patient alive.. once the insurance money runs out. This women I speak of had to sell her house and then knock on doctors doors to keep her husband from dying. Also.. people like me.. and there are many today.. believe in alternative and holistic healing. I absolutely do not believe in the AMA ways and standards and tests etc. So.. to make people like me believe in something we don't is ridiculous. I use to work as a Bankruptcy Paralegal. When medical bills don't get paid and go to collections. After a certain time they are written off and drop off. The company no longer is responsible for these bills. It becomes a tax write off. So do not..believe the lie.. that is out there ...stating "Whom Will Pay For These Bills".. these are written off. If anything.. the person responsible will get a bad credit rating/score. That is all that will happen. The establishments write these bad debts off.

Our taxes do not.. go up because of the personal liability for medical bills. If this were true Bankruptcies on a Federal Level and discharges from would not be in place and occur. Wake Up America. We are being lied to.. then sold down the river.

You will live a lot longer not going to a doctor and managing your health natural ways. Seek them out first. Your body was made to heal itself and cancer have been reversed through diet changes .. nutrition and prayer. My friend is an RN and said it has been done.

Do not believe everything your hear. This is just another way to make money for insurance companies and especially the private sector. If you don't work and have a part time job.. you can't pay and afford health care. Bottom Line!

Why are you so damn nieve? I use to be a Bankruptcy Paralegal. I know all about this. This is a tax write off for Companies/Corporations. Federal Bankruptcy as well as un paid debt. will only damage a personals credit/score. Not.. everyone elses. Nor .. was it ever.. Or will ever be anyone elses responsibility. Your being lied to. This is sad when people like you.. whom never worked in this sector believe this garbage in order to sell you insurance and allow the Government to control when you expire. That is what this is all about. That is the reality which is not your reality at all. Just like when you die. No one is responsible for your debt. I watch Suze Orman all the time. This question always comes up. If you had a million dollars in medical bills and left the earth tomorrow .. no one can come after for the bills you left. Where do they go? The same place the bills go when people can't pay them.. because there are no jobs to pay them with. They are a tax write off. WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

The va is the biggest run government insurance in the united states and it works! I receive champ va and they paid my hospital bills tha had accued before I became elligable. Till was over 87000 and the government paid the hospital what they deemed the services were worth, which by the way the hospital had to except as payment in full. This was 22400. The new healthcare bill will cause the rates for procedures and treatment to come down.

If's fine to not want to carry health insurance and the government shouldn't force people to carry it. BUT, when healthcare is needed, don't complain about how expensive it is. You made the choice not to carry insurance. It's like car insurance, you pay premiums and most of the time you don't need it, but when you do need it, it's there for you. Everybody should carry insurance, but they shouldn't be forced to.

NO NO NO NO and NO. I am tired of the government sticking their little fingers into everything. Forcing us to wear a seat belt, forcing us to get auto ins., forcing us to answer very personal information when they are taking the census, forcing us to do way too many things.

Its no longer The Land Of The Free.

I agree with you. The prices are so expensive.. No I don't go to the doctor but yes I had a bad case of food poisoning and had to go the hospital to the sum of $1200. That was for a couple of texts a nausea shot and 3 bags of fluid. That is seriously overpriced. I know for a face that the insurance companies do not pay them that much.
We put a lot of our money into preventative care. Eat well.. mostly healthy fruits and veggies and as much organic as possible. And we also get therapeutic massages 3-4times a month.
If I need a doctor for something I go to my Acupuncturist that specializes in Chinese medicine. I have had one since infection.. one cold.. and food poisoning. in the last 4 years. I can't see paying over $300 a month then a $2000 to $10000 deductable. That just seems highly unreasonable.
I would get more preventative care don't if it wasn't so expensive.
We are small business owners so there is not company to flip the rest of the bill for us.

We where thinking about getting Aflac as a back up but I was told that it didn't apply and we needed a basic helth care plan.

try having them tell you they couldn't get a hold of you because they said you put down the wrong address so they just sent it to collection. When in fact they never once left a message and come to find out I did give them the right address they just didn't put the apt number on it.
What to do now.. now I have a bill in collection for food poisoning that I couldn't get the restaurant to take responsibility for because no one was the manager and could hardly speak English.

My family is doing all they can to stay healthy .. eating well .. working out ..regular massages .. and once a month check up with our acupunctuerist. no drinking smoking and what not..
