wendyj42 posted:
Hi all, I have been going through severe Siatic Nerve pain in my leg due to a birth defect for sometime now. I have tried everything I can think of to ease the pain but, I don't know what else to do. Sometimes the pain is so severe that the only thing to do is cry myself to sleep. I am in so much pain most of the time and can't do anything. Please help me! I am out of options.

What has your doctor suggested you try already, what does he suggest you try next?

Take care, Annette

Hi Wendy,

I'm wondering the same thing Annette is... what has been tried so far?

David Maine, MD responded:
Wendy - So sorry to hear of your struggle. At this point I would see your primary care doc who may order further test or refer you to a specialist to coordinate your care. Understanding the cause is the key to proper treatment. Often a focused physical exam along with MRI imaging can help elucidate a cause. Sometimes a nerve conduction study and basic labs can help as well when things are less clear. I hope this helps. There a number of treatments available. Once the cause is understood making a therapeutic decision is much easier. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Good luck.

He has had me try heat mostly. That is about it. I take black cherry concentrate which is supposed to help a little. I cannot take anti-inflammatory pills due to the gastric by-pass that I had two years ago. I now also have an anti-inflammatory cream that he just gave me this week called, Voltaren Gel. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Thank you Dr Maine. I will contact my physician on Monday and see if they can do an MRI and a new physical exam.
