Is it weird if I want to ask my doc if I can be tested again?
I went for a PFT when I was 20 (almost 10 years ago), and it came back negative for regular asthma, but the doc gave me ventolin for exercise induced asthma since I had the symptoms of it.
Since then I finally have a regular doc, and he has me on Advair because of coughing which has worsened since quitting smoking, ironically. He says it's couch variant asthma.
I don't think the Advair is making a drastic difference because I have a feeling my coughing it's allergy related, and maybe a even vocal chord problem.
I'd like to be properly tested for EIA despite having pretty typical symptoms of it when I exercise and also in cold weather. But I'd also like to be re-tested for asthma because I don't think I have "regular" asthma, and maybe not even cough variant.
This morning as an experiment, since I've been feeling tight in my chest, hoarse the past several days, I took a Claritin and a lot of that grossness in my chest and throat has gone away. Not 100%, but I feel significantly better.
What I'm getting at, is that I don't want to be taking medication that I don't have to. If I had my way, I'd take none at all!

I don't have bad enough asthma to require a nebulizer, maybe I'll just wait an extra few minutes, or maybe walk a bit longer before I begin to run.
I'm able to run 10 straight minutes now, and then 20 total within a 40 minute work out.
I can't believe I went most of my life thinking I couldn't run because I was over weight and lazy, when it was really asthma that was keeping me on the couch. I'm so thankful for my current doc! Does anyone have any good tips or tricks to getting gunk out before work outs?
I've just started running, and take 2 puffs of ventolin before I get going. Using the ventolin usually also loosens up gunk that's sitting in my chest, but it's not always easy to get out, and takes about 10 - 15 mins after starting my work outs before I can get good deep breaths going. Any tips on clearing it out quickly? It's mostly in my right lung.

I'm pretty sure you can get Ventolin DPI/Diskus now. It's a higher dose than the HFA inhalers, but there's no propellant. I think the DPI is 200 mcg doses instead of the 100 mcg you get from ye olde puffers
After cutting down to once a day and using it regularly, the side effects are gone. I also just hit the treadmill for the first time since starting on Advair, and was FINALLY able to take deep breaths through my entire work out. I ran about 17 minutes in the hour I was on.
I tried my workout without taking Ventolin first to see what kind of a difference the Advair makes on it's own. I'm pretty happy! Got tight right near the end, and now I'm coughy and wheezy, but that's exercise asthma. So it's all good, nothing a couple puffs won't fix.
Also, since I've been using the Advair more regularly, I'm not coughing as much in general. Certain things like perfumes/scented stuff still bother me, but I'm feeling pretty good otherwise.
Not as much nastiness in my chest in the mornings either. I don't get that horrible rumble in the bottom of my lungs when I take my first big breath/yawn of the day.
I'm 29, I have cough variant asthma and exercise induced asthma. My doc gave me Advair 250/50, and it works quite well, except I get some annoying side effects.
Mainly really bad dry mouth, JITTERS (oy vey, if anything can cause jitters, I get em), and I lose my appetite.
I didn't finish my first trial run because those side effects were making me crazy. When I saw my doc for follow up, he said I could use it once a day instead of twice, but would prefer that I give it another good ol' college try. I mean it works, I don't get the morning junk in my chest as often anymore, and only get cough attacks once in a while, and I don't react with coughing every time I'm around perfumes and scents as much. Not sure what it does for my EIA yet because I was in a car accident 2 weeks ago, so haven't been hitting the treadmill while I'm recovering from seatbelt injuries to my chest, and a banged up shin and ankle (I think I kicked myself in the ankle with my own foot, lol).

Do these side effects eventually go away? Anyone else lose their appetite on Advair?
Is there an alternative to Albuterol out there? I don't use it incrediby often. It's mostly just before I'm active (as directed by my doc), but it gives me the WORST jitters, and the jitters usually last for hours. They get less as the day goes on, but I can still feel it up to 6 hours after taking it. I'm going to be playing kickball on a fun league, and also going to be getting ready to run a 5k in June, and hopefully keep running until school starts in September, and would really prefer to do my activities without feeling so shakey.
Anyone have/had the same issue that's using something else?View Thread
