marieh9 posted: I have posted previously but had a new question. I was injured several times 1. dog attached by least to pants pulled me forward. 2. PT was doing a manual adjustment did wrong leg and caused major pain, sat too much. 3. was laying on bed with knees bent and left knee fell out to left side (free fall) and I felt a tear but don't know if there was. I have had chronic pain since in one spot on my low back near the L5-S1 area on the buttock sort of near the SI joint. I had a MRI of lower back and bone scan before injury #3 and it was totally normal. I had a hip Xray after injury 3 and it was also normal. After injury 3 I can cross my left leg over the right knee while sitting but not the same as the right side. When I try, the muscles in the left buttock are very tight and I get increased pain in the injury area mentioned above but it doesn't last into the next day. After a year and a half I still can't cross that leg properly and was told to stop trying to cross it for about 6 months until my pain when down. The pain is getting better but I tried again to cross it and it still is frozen. I need to be able to dress and can't bend either. Will I be able to loosen it up if I keep trying? Is there something wrong that I should get checked or is it just scar tissue? what should I do? I am walking a hour a day including hills and doing some chores and driiving but I can't do all my chores yet. Any suggestions on how to start bending without hurting myself?
thanks in advacne for any suggestions.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry about your foot problem. Is there any new way to add fat or something to your feet. i know this sounds weird but they do grafting for burns so? Yes sitting hurts very much on a hard surface, a padded chair is ok. I'm working on building mucles so I hope it will improve this. It is like riding a bike when you aren't used to it, you get really sore. So, I hope with more work it will get better. I currently have foot problems too. My toe is infected and also the nail has fungus. I have been on antibiotics for a month plus an antifungal. I will probably have to get the nail removed next week or the week after. I am a bit scared and don't want to be set back from exercises as it is the only think helping my back problem too. Oh well, thanks for llistening.

Hi bj1208,
I have been diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome as I mentioned. I'm MRI/bone scan normal as well as hip xray normal. I have been to an orthopedic spine specialist, neurologist, GP, physiatrist, pain doc and now I have an integrative pain medicine doctor who takes care of me but I don't see him for 12 weeks. This is a general question. Does not having enough muscle mass versus fat, on your behind cause it it be much more uncomfortable to sit on a hard chair? I didn't put in the details as I have been on here a lot and also thought the question a general one not a diagnositic one. I hope this helps.

Hi, I have chronic myofascial pain in the left lower back (upper buttock area) and have been deconditioned or gotten weak. I am trying to get back in shape by walking hills little by little. But, when I sit on a hard seat it feels like my "butt bones" or sitz bones? are hitting the chair rather than my tissue. Is this because I don't have enough muscles? Will this improve with walking hills? Any other suggestions.

Davedsel57,
thanks, I'll take a look. I thought I would try and send Dr. Minchew another email but since apparently he is not helping with this I will rely on everyones experience and give an update since I have seen more doctors and so forth since then. I also need moral support. I appreciate all the help everyone has given me.

Hi BJ1208,
Yes I remember you as well. Well I keep getting reinjured and it is in the same place so I hope trigger points or myofascial massage will help. I have been seen by an orthopedic surgeon and he said my MRI looked normal and my problem is not spinal. Also saw a physiatrist and she said she had no clue what I had and referred me to a neurologist to make sure I didn't have any problem there. The neurologist said my reflexes and other tests were normal and gave me a muscle relaxant and referred me to the center for integrative medicine. so I have seen that doctor and he switched the muscle relaxant to Flexeril and gave me a plant based NSAID that doesn't hurt your stomach (Limbrel 500) though the insurance won't pay for it. I get it at Costco a lot cheaper and have a coupon for it. Those two meds lowered my pain a lot after two weeks but then I reinjured myself. So my pain has gone back up. I have had 5 sesssions of accupunture since and that didn't help. So, I see the doc again next week. He may send me to their PT's he said they were better. I probably will try the trigger point or massage if they will let me just because I have to. I was told not to do strenghthening yet until my pain drops. I don't know what else he has in mind. i can't get into a pool, legs not strong enough now to get up steps. Although the YMCA has a ramp here. So, I think I have the right diagnosis but not sure what will be next. I would love to get back to aquatic therapy. I did do that for a couple of weeks last year. Then the PT injured me and I couldn't do anything and got weak. So, anyway that is where I am and thanks for listening.

Dr. Minchew please help
marieh9 posted: I will give you some history:
Pain upper left buttock near SI joint.
MRI lumbar and bone scan negative (I year ago main injury)
Doc's Dx, GP musculoskeltal, orthosurgeon, dynamic not structural
pain doc did consult (no physical) Neurologist, GP and integrative medicine doctor says myofascial pain syndrome.
After main injury I got better but reinjured badly by PT. Went on pain meds and sat for 1 1/2 months. Second PT also injured me by pushing me too fast and now I can't cross my left leg same as right and can't bend to wash my feet. Pain varies, some days low some moderately high. sometimes tight at back of thigh, calf and heel bottom and back hurts but gets better with rest.
I keep pulling the area about every two weeks or so, in same area and recover. I walk an hour a day slowly and doing some stretches. Still sitting most of the day. I am doing some small things around the house and can drive but that hurts too.
Questions:
1. 4 doctors think I have myofascial pain syndrome two PT's think I have SI joint. I responded well to Flexeril and NSAIDS so I'm thinking the doctors are right and the PT's are wrong. What do you think?
2. I had this once before when dog pulled me forward. It took 6 months of PT and I recovered but now I am weaker. I keep getting small reinjuries and having trouble getting past that into strenthening
Any suggestions on how to prevent injuries and how to get stronger without injury? I know I have a new doctor but I would like to hear what you have to say about this. 3. What do you think about trigger point injections and myofascial massage?

bj1208,
Sorry about your back. Yes there is a type of massage for myofascial release too. But I am also interested in the trigger point injections. Did they help when they did the injections? How painful was it during or after? I assume the steroid or numbing agent helped while they were doing it except when you started getting the reactions to them. I am sorry to hear that. Are the trigger point injections supposed to be temporary or can they sometimes work long term? I am thinking of accupunture too. Have you tried that? It works for some.

Hi bj1208,
thanks for the info. How long do you usually take the drug when you do? She is thinking of having me on it long term, not just for a week. I didn't get a chance to ask many questions with this new doctor. So, tomorrow I'm seeing my GP and then next week I'm going to the Integrative pain medicine center. So I think I will hold off until next Tuesday.
take care,
