I went to the neurologist today and ruled out MS ( I didn't think I had it) and the doctor thinks my back pain is most likely myofascial pain. She prescribed Zanaflex and i am worried about the side effects. What were your experiences and is it worth it. Also, if you went off of it how bad are the withdrawal symptoms.
thanks,

Sorry you are going through all this. I am skeptical about fibromyalgia it seems to be a catch all they are using when they can't diagnose you. I would lose the Chiropractor they can damage your spine more. do you know of a physiatrist MD (not DO) in your area? THey are physical medicine, docs with rehab medine too and pain medicine. They diagnose and then coordinate your treatment plan. I'm going to one next week. I would avoid surgery. most of the time it makes you worse.Yes you could have both scoliosis and a number of other things together. Who diagnosed the hips being out of alignment the chiro? Did you get an MRI and that was what showed the scoliosis? If you have pinched nerves the drugs you are on should help some. You can try a drug like Cymbalta (along with the other drugs) and see if that helps. The pain med doc I went to was a jerk too. Really nasty guy. You need a good diagnosis and then pain management for a while. Do you have degenerative disc? Have you thought of physical therapy? I am guarded when I say that because you need a good diagnosis first and pain management then perhaps some of the stretches will stretch out the degenerative discs that may be pinching nerves if that is what they see.

I assume you have had a MRI? If not I would have that done to be sure there is nothing structural they missed. I have had low back pain for a year and it is non-spinal and I can't bend or wash below the waste. I can't dress myself. My MRI is negativo and I just had a set of Hip Xrays to be sure. I am going to a physiatrist (physical medicine-rehab doctor) next week. I hope she can diagnose me. The PT's say it is SI joint the doctors all say either myofascial or nerve. I am on the fence here with no relief and can't do much. I would say see a physiatrist MD (not DO) if you have one in your area.
I hope my visit goes well with her too! I am stiff in the mornings too. I have pain while laying down but it usually goes away until I get up. Sitting is ok in some chairs driving is out so far. Did you know of an injury associated with it?

Yes now I remember some of the problems you mentioned but you gave me more detail and an understanding of what happened to you. Yes nerve problems are awful. I would say no to the pain pump. Did I tell you my sister in law had one and it leaked? It worked for about a year and that was it. She then has a combo of lamictal and antidepresants that work on the pain. Do things like neurontin or lamictal work at all for you? You can have nerve ablation but the nerve grows back in about 8 months and you suffer the back pain and recovery after the surgery. My MRI didn't show any degerative problems. I am begining to believe it is either SI Joint dysfunction and/or nerve problems. I did a test today on myself. I twisted a little this morning and felt a sharp pain. When I had gone to the second PT he had me do a self correction and also showed my husband how to do a full correction. Though they don't work that long as it works on the muscle and it pushes the SI in he says, it used to take my pain in entirely away if it was SI and not a pulled or torn muscle of couse.
anyway thanks for the info and I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks for all your info. My plan is to see a physiatrist first then if that doesn't work a DO or a pain doc (don't know which would give me better direction and/or pain relief. I am worried about the doctors doing the physical and causing more pain and maybe injury. I seem to be getting a pull (either from the SIJ if that is the case or from a muscle or nerve) about every two weeks now that I have gone almost off of neurontin. Before when i was on 1000mg/day Neurontin I wasn't in any less pain but I didn't get these smaller injuries that set me back for a week then I get better then again get injured by a twist, a bend or such small movements. I have been very careful but things still keep happening. I'm not getting any stronger because of my pain (which varies day to day from low-moderate to moderate if I haven't been recently injured to high for about 3 days if I have been injured. I hope the physiatrist won't hurt me but can diagnose me properly and get me out of this atrophied state. When I first got the injury about 3 or 4 years ago my dog yanked me forward and I felt a pinch near the SI joint and then two days later a lot of pain. The pain lasted for 6 months and I had about 2 months of physical therapy and I got much stronger around the pelvic girdle. He said I had a torn ligament. Which could be the case. I wasn't pain free until I stopped PT and then the pain went away. I went to France on a trip and there are lots of stairs and I had no problem with them. Then, I went up the very large stairs in Mt. St. Michelle and it hurt alot. Then I had no pain for a year and a half when I did a twist of my hips in yoga. So, the PT actually helped get me a lot stronger then I got better. The pain this time is in the same exact place. So I think that it is a recurrance of the same thing. the difference is that after this initial injury I got better after 6 weeks PT (no pain) then I bent and hurt myself. I got mad and went to a different PT ( I was in the grieving process as I lost my brother and father in law in the same year). The new PT said it was SI joint and he did corrections which helped for a day or two. Then he did the counterpressure on the wrong leg and pressed on the wrong side of the sacrum and I had severe pain like I never had before and went on pain meds. I sat for two months got atrophied and then finally went back to a PT my doctor swore by. He got me out of pain but then started to go too fast and I started pulling muscles and tore something. I again sat for 2 months got so stiff I can't cross my left leg the same and can't bend. So I can't wash lower than the waist as it hurts or put pants on by myself. Now I am walking 40 minutes a day and doing light stretches only. I am still getting these smaller set backs though so I'm not moving forward so I can get stronger and I'm still sitting too much. Let me know what you think of it all and if my plan sounds good. I also plan on getting a new MRI. I have read your article about prolotherapy. The science he takes about is sound but the procedure hasn't been proven yet. My former supervisor had it for chronic tendonitis and it worked temporarily but then it came back. She had many trips to the prolotherpist. Well, thanks again and feel free to comment that includes anyone.

Thanks for helping. I did see an orhopedic spine specialist and had the MRI and bone scan and he said i was normal. He originally wanted a CT scan but when he saw the bone scan he said it was very clean and he didn't need the CT after all. But I need to get another MRI because I have a couple of different problems since then. I am trying not to get a CT if can help it because of the high radiation and getting cancer from too many Xrays. But they are trying to lower the amount of radiation now so we'll see. I totally appreciate any suggestions and comments even if you repeat or what ever. You can't see SI joint problems on an MRI can you as the movement is in milimeters? But he did look at it, but they may have missed something else. I would really really like to get diagnosed so I can get the right treatment. A myelogram is for the muscles or is in injected into the spine? I am thinking of going to a physiatrist (rehab -physical medine doc) because I need direction. My ortho spine doc said it is dynamic not structural and that was it. He did give me a referral to a pain doctor to get a SI joint injection or a facet joint injection to rule those out. But the pain doctor just got a history and said you have chronic myofascial get accupuncture or biofeedback. While I think these things can't hurt ( though my insurance didn't pay for it) I will have to go back to get a SI joint injection if someone really suspects that other than a PT. Well, take care and I'll keep you posted. Feel free to keep the comments coming and to talk about yourself if you like too.
