Many people come to this WebMD Back Pain Community looking for help in getting a diagnosis of a cause and relief from their back pain. Most of us are not medical professionals that are members in this community, but we have personal experience in dealing with chronic pain due to multiple different spinal conditions.
I've decided to post this tip that lists the steps a back patient should be following for obtaining an accurate diagnosis and getting an effective treatment plan.
1. Talk to your primary doctor. Describe the symptoms you are experiencing in detail and how it is affecting your daily life — keeping you awake, preventing you from functioning normally, what your pain level is on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worst, etc.
2. If required by your health insurance, have your primary doctor give you a referral to a local spine specialist such as an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. When seeing the spine specialist, make sure to again provide all details of your symptoms.
3. The spine specialist should send you for (or do in the office if they have the equipment) a CT scan or an MRI of your spine. An x-ray will not show soft tissue such as discs and will not show all that could be causing your back pain.
4. The spine specialist should then review the results of the diagnostic testing with you. Make sure you understand everything and ask questions until you do understand.
5. The spine specialist should then provide a recommended treatment plan. This could involve seeing a pain management specialist, a physiatrist, or something simple like OTC medications and applying hot and/or cold to the area that is painful.
6. Some people benefit from physical therapy, hydrotherapy, chiropractic care, injections, exercises, or other traditional and/or non-traditional therapies. Surgery should always be a last resort but may be needed in some cases.
7. Don't do any treatment you are not comfortable with or causes you more pain.
8. Do your research on-line and be armed with knowledge about spinal conditions. Here is a link to a resource I created on this WebMD Back Pain Community that lists links to good spine sites: http://forums.webmd.com/3/back-pain-exchange/resource/10?@guest@
I hope this helps people to know how to go about getting help for their back pain.View Thread

I have been a member of WebMD for over 10 years. A recent change in the communities has led me to a decision to have my membership deleted and no longer post in any community.
WebMD has decided to have all communities be 'self-moderating'. There are no more moderators. In other communities I have seen that inappropriate posts are not being deleted. There is a lot of bickering among members. Spam stays on the boards far too long before being deleted. New members are posting with rather radical ideas and trying to convice others that they are right.
WebMD is a public, world-wide site with the communities open to anyone. Without moderation I no longer feel safe posting here. I have enjoyed my time here and learned a great deal. I wish everyone in this community success in managing their chronic back pain.View Thread

Hello and welcome.
I am not a doctor, but do have over 35 years experience managing chronic back pain. I would have to answer 'yes'. Pain from a spinal problem could radiate to the chest.
Please read through the Tip at the top of this WebMD Back Pain Community that lists the recommended steps for diagnosing and treating back pain. Within that tip are links to websites that have very good related information.
Since you notice the pain first thing in the morning, it may be your mattress if is is older. Many people find relief from back pain when they get a mattress that offers proper support. It could be something more complex, so seeing your doctor would be a good idea.
I hope you can answers, treatment and relief soon.View Thread

Hello, John. Welcome.
We are a group of lay people that have back pain. No doctor replies to posts any longer.
You will need to discuss your medications with your doctor to determine what you can take for pain. Talk to your heart doctor and see if there is anything that can be prescribed to help you.
I pray you can get relief soon.View Thread

She saw her pain management specialist this morning. He is scheduling the second rhizotomy to be done on her left lower back. They think it can be done around the 28th of this month.
The pain is still lower in the area where the facet nerves were burned. The rest of her back is still painful. We will see how she does after the second procedure.
The pain management specialist said this is just for lower pain and a bit more functionality. He does not think she will be able to work at they type of job she had ever again. This means the injury caused permanent disability which will be addressed in another hearing.
Thanks for asking, and thanks so much for your prayers.View Thread

Hello.
Joy has given you excellent advice, as always. I think the only way to resolve this is for you to discuss this with the health mission of your country's embassy and/or jhons hopkins itself.
We are lay people who suffer from back pain. The assigned health experts no longer reply to posts. All we can do is share our own experiences and knowledge of the best procedures for getting spinal problems diagnosed and treated.
I hope you can get this resolved and get the relief you need soon.View Thread

Hello and welcome.
Only your doctor can give you an accurate prognosis about your condition and being able to play football at 100% again. I am not a doctor, but will say that IMHO given that it is only one disc and that you are young and healthy I would think your chances are pretty good.
Read through the Tip at the top of this WebMD Back Pain Community that gives the recommended steps for diagnosing and treating back pain. Within that tip are links to websites that have very good related information. Read through other posts in this community and see how others are fairing with similar conditions.
Keep doing your research. Keep a positive attitude. Keep moving as much as possible.
I pray you can get the right treatment and relief soon.View Thread
