Joseph F. Goldberg, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. He also maintains a private practice in Norwalk, Conn. He is an internationally recognized authority on the diagnosis, treatment, and clinical features of bipolar disorder, particularly with respect to novel medication strategies for bipolar depression, comorbid disorders (such as alcoholism and substance abuse), suicide, cognition, and long-term course of illness.

Goldberg was site principal investigator at the Weill-Cornell Medical Center for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder and has received research grants from the NIMH, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), and the Theodore and Vada Stanley Foundation. He has published more than 140 peer-reviewed research papers related to bipolar disorder and co-edited two textbooks (Cognitive Dysfunction in Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Clinicians and Outcome in Bipolar Disorders) both published by the American Psychiatric Association. His many professional awards include two NARSAD Young Investigator Awards, a New Investigator Award from the NIMH New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit, a Travel Fellowship from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and a Laughlin Fellowship from the American College of Psychiatrists.

Goldberg is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and of the International Society for Affective Disorders. He is a member of the Society of Biological Psychiatry and the American Society for Clinical Psychopharmacology. He is on the editorial board for a number of psychiatric journals, including the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and Bipolar Disorders, and is also the deputy editor of the journal Current Psychiatry.
