My son is taking 5 mg of saphris 1x at bed, the cherry flavor. He has also been taking depakote but is slowing coming off of the depakote. I think he has responded better to the saphris than the depakote. The small amount seems to work better than the other meds he has tried up to this point (3 years). What is your opinion about taking saphris long term to treat bipolar 1? I have to say that I am very impressed with the results from such a small amount of medication.View Thread

The saphris has helped with the depression, sleep, and psychosis. May will be a year since he's been on it and I have to say that this is the best he's been out of the 3 years since he was diagnosed. He doesn't like taking alot of meds and the saphris seems to work so well with just the one dose so he wanted to stop taking the depakote. I will go to his next appointment and discuss it with his dr.

Hi brigitte29, I don't come on this web site as often as I use to. I just noticed your post. I'm sorry to hear that your son is not well. It's been a rough three years for us but my son is doing a lot better now. I'm certainly not an expert but I do know that finding a good doctor and the right medicine is very important. Dr. G was a great help in my time of need. I went to NAMI support group meetings and I searched high and low for a good Dr. My son now sees a Dr. who is considered an expert in Bipolar and my son is now taking Saphris and depakote. I like the way he has responded to the Saphris - it works quickly and has helped with the depression and psychosis. I read every book I could find on bipolar to help me understand what my son is going through. Sleep is very important. When my son sleeps well he does well. When he doesn't sleep I can tell. Sleeps is just as important as the medicine. Drinking and illegal drugs makes him worse and we have worked very hard to keep him from doing either. If you would like you can give me your email and I can contact you and we could talk. I met a woman in my NAMI support group and it was nice to have someone to talk to who was experiencing the same things I was.View Thread

Dr. G. My son recently tested positive for Hepatitis C, he was retested but I don't have the results as of yet. Can you get a false positive from the depakote?

That is some ultimatum. Most mexicans want to come to America not the other way around. That is a lot to ask whether you love him or not. Wow. How many children do you have? I don't know if I would pack my kids up and take them to Mexico for anyone. Your health insurance which you now have is so important for you and your son. I'm sure your husband is very stressed about the situation but taking off to Mexico is major decision. I'm not sure how your husband lost his job but I know al lot of people who have lost there jobs and almost their houses. The economy has been rough for everyone. Your lucky you have a job that offers OT and benefits. That is hard to find now a days. Could you get outside help for your son to relieve some of stress? How old is he, your son I mean? Take your time thinking this one out, you don't want to go from the frying pan into the oven. Sounds like the stress is getting to him which is understandable. Is there something he likes to do to help him relax? For us women and nice hot bubble bath does the trick sometimes. Maybe a day off or fishing. Take care of yourself, this is a stressful situation for you to be in. I'll be thinking of you.
