A great number of laws dealing with mental illness and gun possesion have existed since 1968. To find them listed by state go to: http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/justice/possession-of-a-firearm-by-the-mentally-ill.aspx Recent events are causing juristictions to take a harder look at consistently enforcing these laws, but few effect those who are not an instable element in our society. Most call for those adjudicated with mental illness to not possess guns - generally means someone committed involuntarily, guilty of domestic violence and felony, addicted to drugs or alcohol or generally someone seriously unstable who is fighting treatment. I support the enforcement of these laws and feel that mass killings but those with untreated illnesses negatively impact those who maintain stability and treatment for their conditions in a responsible, mature fashion. By way of explanation, I teach poetry, cartooning and creative writing - subjects in which I generally ask students to dive into their individual creative cores. It is just the large number of students diagnosed with bipolar in their mid teens that as a group hold ideas I'm finding hard to handle in their work and conduct. Thank you again. DavidView Thread

Thank you so much, Doctor Goldberg. I will convey your answer to my students. If I can bother you for one more thing, these same students have also developed a belief that lithium is a dangerous or very heavy medication. Having taken it successfully since 1983, I know better but somehow the psychiatrists in my area must be providing this informtion to their young patients or the parents. When it has come up I've asked if anyone has asked their doctor to try lithium, but they all tell me it is bascically poison. Any suggestions? These are community college kids who need to find some solid ground for their lives and I'm trying to help them. Thank you. DavidView Thread

Prozac takes between two and three weeks to begin to take effect. Depokote is a mood stabilizer. Adderall is a med for ADHD. It sounds like a mixed bag. Find out your diagnose and ask you doctor what each med is intended to do and when. DavidView Thread

I'm sorry to ask you something you've probably answered before but there seems to be two groups of thought on rapid cycling. The DMS says over 4 times a year but those diagnosed in the last 15 years take this as changing moods every hour. I work with students who have been diagnosed early on and they use their diagnosis a reason for having no control or coping skills other then blowing up. Most have medications but take them at will. As I have 3 girls and 1 boy with this, 18-24, the combo can be very disruptive. Being diagnosed myself with manic-depression in 1983, I recall being happy to take meds and therapy in an effort not to waste more of my life. What do I do when doctors tell kids they cycle every hour and its medical. DavidView Thread

Lotus, there are many wonderful caring bipolar resources you can find on Google (I'd suggest some but that might be frowned upon). I have also found that while Dr. Goldberg is an excellent resource, this is a closed community run by one or two not iterested in wellness. I apologize that you and so many others have had to experience this especially when you were most vulerable. I hope you find a good on-line group who will support you and anyone else who comes to them knowing how severe this illness can be for someone asking for support and being rudely rebuffed. I wish you well...it does get better. DavidView Thread

When people blame their inability to deal with everyday solutions in a calm, coherent, respectful manner on their bipolar diagnosis, the many people who deal with life professionally and functionally suffer. Cursing, name calling and blaming are behaviors of someone in need of more effective coping skills, not a symptom of bipolar. You may wish to get cognitive therapy as well as rechecking your meds in light of your changing body to insure your dosage is keeping up with your age. It sounds like multiple conditions may be stressful, but blaming bipolar means those of us living and working with this illness must work harder to disprove the stigma you've reinforced. Thank you. Seems overly complex. Bipolar is a matter of speed - fast and slow. The illness is not being self-aware of what speed you are going while also stuck in an autopilot mode. You are you, just not in control of your speed. DavidView Thread
