substance abuse creates it's own mental problems, so getting a diagnosis is not possible until the substance abuse is removed. a doctor cannot tell you if it is a mental illness or the drugs or alcohol that are causing the problems. so get clean first, then the doctor can help you find what is going on.View Thread

if you are diagnosed as manic depressive, that is a bipolar diagnosis. just called by a different name.
sorry to say, you need drugs to treat it. you may be feeling fine now, but it will come back and bite you in the butt. therapy is also important. cbt as you mentioned and dbt therapies are both good for learning how to cope with the illness.View Thread
there is no weird dynamic here. you were asked a valid question. a yes or no answer would have sufficed. no one was asking you for personal information. i stepped in because i did not want my friend to be alone. it was not an attack on you, just further explanation as to why that question was necessary. i'm sorry you feel that friends sticking up for each other is a bad thing.
