He is doing great, despite it all and being sick for about two weeks last month.
However, I am not doing so good. My husband and I rarely have 'alone' time, our rooms are right next to each other. I feel like the cook, the maid, the caretaker etc. I have lost my alone time in my house and feel stuck!
On the other hand I am trying to be there for my husband and be a good DIL because he is dying and it is hard. I lost my father four years ago to cancer. He went within a month of us finding out he had stage four melanoma, so I know what's coming.
I feel like a horrible person. I want my life back ( I feel like the guy from BP when I say that) yet he is losing his and my husband is losing his father. Please help!
Thank you!View Thread
The question that I have is related to insurance my parents secondary insurance just cancelled them because he made a payment that was $100 short -apparently they recieved notification that the premiums had increased but due to the strokes my dad missed it. Is there anything that my parents can do to rectify this? Does anyone know of a similar situation?
Also, I have gone through most of the post that others have written, but unfortunately I havent found much on people regaining short term memory loss from strokes. Is it possible? I may just be looking for false hope...View Thread
Whether male or female, you know caregiving can translate into less sleep and getting enough sleep is important to properly care for your loved ones.
Read this article, Women Give Up Sleep to Care for Others, then come back to give your thoughts.

My cousin has breast cancer. She followed regular medical diagnosis up to November, then bailed-out just before a lumpectomy. She now goes to a special clinic that charges thousands of dollars per week to hook her up to their "secret formula" intravenous cancer treatment.
I want to be supportive, and I'm OK with trying alternatives, but this outfit seems to have achieved the perfect con. She now refuses to have any REAL medical examination to see if the therapy is being effective -- instead she sends a urine sample to a lab in the Philippines. They perform some hocus-pocus there (far from US laws) and proclaim that her urine tests show that her treatment is working great ! She is not going to take a real look at her cancer's progress or remission until it's too late to have an Option B.
HELP !! This is like having an emotionally vulnerable person who gets sucked into a cult. But -- most people gradually come to their senses in a cult and grow out of it. My cousin doesn't have 12 months to avoid treatment while waiting to "wake-up."
I understand the appeal of alternative treatment -- the conventional approach to cancer is shockingly harsh and poisonous. But -- I know a dozen people who went through it .. and all are alive today.
Surely somewhere there is a support group for family members in my position, but I cannot find anything. Trying to talk directly to my cousin and give her information on cancer-cure scams is useless ... but maybe someone with more experience in such matters can offer useful guidance ?
Thanks for giving this some thought, and passing-along any helpful ideas.
(Complaining to the BBB, FTC, or FDA is not going to result in any action in time to help my cousin ...)View Thread
1. Terminal cancer (lung), don't know how long he has left (they said he won't see next Christmas). Going to chemo and radiation.
2. Early onset altheimers (wrong spelling).
3. He also has a colostemy bag (and the things associated with that..by itself it wouldn't be much but in combination with the other things. There are complications with that now (I won't go into all the gory details)
Is there anything I can do to help her? Is there anywhere I can go for resources? What can she do? She needs help taking care of him but with the finances the way she are can't afford it on her own. She is getting overwelmed quickly. Anything that you could pass along would be of great help.View Thread

At a recent series of lectures presented to the public, Tom McGovern, professor of psychiatry at Texas Tech's Health Sciences Center, reported that "people who use their spirituality to navigate life, cope better under stress, heal faster from their illnesses and experience benefits to their mental health.".
What do you think? Please take a moment to vote in our poll: Does Prayer Help Others Heal?

My father was diagnosed in May 2010 with stage 3 lung cancer . At the time of his diagnosis we were told he had 6-9 months to live. He elected to undergo radiation treatment only which he will complete
next week (33 treatments). He has not had any side effects at all from
his treatment . He shows no outward symptoms from his disease . He
has no problems breathing, no loss of appetite etc. This goes against
everything that his doctor told us would happen when he was diagnosed in May. I am confused what to expect in the coming months ?View Thread
Doctors are telling her to stay out of the sun and heat, but I'm wondering if there are ways around this. If I set the wedding for sunset, get her a big floppy hat, and make sure she has a nice spot under an umbrella...
Thoughts??View Thread
Recently she has complained about having trouble catching her breath. I observe her but she does not seem to have any outward symtoms. She seems to be breathing fine, still she complains about it. I really don't know what to tell her other than to do some exercises.
Her doctor took chest X-rays and found nothing out of the ordinary.
Is there something I can do to help her with this?View Thread
Results of the study were published in the current issue of Psychological Science. The study included 1,688 couples who lived on their own, not in assisted living or a nursing home. All of the study participants were over 70.

It's nice to hear a little positive spin on the role of caregiving, isn't it? It sort of reminds me of the movie The Notebook.
