I saw my doctor to review my results, and I figured I'd share in case anyone is curious. I'll backstep a little: before I had my bloodwork done, my Dr. said she would call me if the results were fine and have me come in if there was a problem. After bloodwork, I got a call from the Dr.'s office saying she wanted me to come in to review my results... so looking at my numbers, I figured the cholesterol was the problem (only thing not in the normal range). Turns out, my Dr. was NOT concerned about my numbers and the office just wanted me to come in person. She said, yes, my total Cholesterol is high, but my HDL is very high and that's a good thing. Her words were "keep doing whatever you're doing" !View Thread
Thanks again bobby! Yes, from what I've read I understand that cholesterol itself is not a disease, and it's important to look at the larger picture of things related to cardiovascular health. I'll see what my doctor suggests. I suppose I worry that she may look at my numbers and jump to conclusions, so it's good to know what test and procedures I should ask for.View Thread

Hi! I'm curious if the original poster has an update after speaking with their doctor. I'm 27 years old, and have nearly the same situation. High total cholesterol, but very high HDL (109), slightly high LDL (111), normal Triglycerides. My last 3 tests have been approximately these levels (though overall, my HDL has increased over time and my LDL has decreased). I exercise frequently and eat a low-fat diet.View Thread
Total is high, but my HDL is very high (which is good, right?) and Triglycerides in the normal range. LDL is elevated, but not too much.
Why is my total considered 'high' if each individual component is good, or near-normal?
Could this indicate a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol? (My parents both have or had high cholesterol, but I assumed theirs was mostly due to insufficient exercise.) I run 3 miles 2-3 times per week (~30 minutes each session) and do yoga once a week for an hour and half. I also do a lot of walking. However, my job involves mostly sitting all day.

I am 24 and also eat healthy and exercise. My doctor recently told me that I had high cholesterol as well and I was baffled. After researching a little, I realized that when checking cholesterol, you're supposed to fast before for about 12 hours before your blood is drawn. My doctor hadn't told me to fast, so I didn't. She later said my cholesterol numbers may be high because I wasn't fasting. Could this be what happened to you?View Thread
Hello, thank you both for your replies. I spoke to my doctor and she said that, yes, my results may be skewed because I was not fasting. She recommended I continue watching my diet and getting exercise and we are going to test my fasting lipid levels in 6 months. I'm not sure why they even bothered to check them without telling me to fast first.
I may also take a fish oil supplement just as an added measure. The doctor said 3 g daily would be ok.View Thread
I went to my doctor for a physical exam a few weeks ago. I just got back my lab results and am shocked to see I have high cholesterol. My written instructions from my doctor say I should increase my exercise and eat a low fat diet (I have not yet talked to my doctor about the results though). I'm confused because I think I already have a pretty healthy lifestyle.
My work day is pretty sedentary (at a desk all day), but I walk to work and home each day (which is about 1.25 miles round trip) and usually take a walk on my lunch break (~30 minutes). I have recently begun jogging for exercise 2 to 3 days per week at a moderate pace (10-11 min per mile) for 40 minutes. On days when I don't jog, I often do pilates at home for 50 minutes. I usually go 2 days a week without exercise.
I eat oatmeal every day for breakfast (and if not, I have whole-grain cereal). I often eat salad for lunch with low-fat dressing. Snacks may include fat-free yogurt, granola bars, nuts, or fruit. I never eat fast food and rarely go out to eat. Dinners vary, but are usually lean protein and veggies. I eat beans, rice, veggies, and fruit a lot. Not a lot of pasta or bread.
Here's what my results say: Total cholesterol — 266 HDL — 79 LDL — 167 Triglycerides — 167
I know that I ate a chocolate chip cookie immediately before my test and I think I had steak for dinner the night before, though I normally only eat red meat once every two weeks or so. Is it possible that this caused a spike in my LDL level at the time my blood was drawn?
Has anyone else who thought they were healthy had results like this? If my HDL level is good, should I be overly concerned about the LDL level?View Thread
