Over the past 8 months, I have lost 60 lbs. by using a great little app for my smart phone called Calorie Counter. This app has a large database of restaurant foods with their calorie counts and nutritional information, as well as typical foods you can buy in the grocery store by both type of food and brand name. The app allows you to enter your weight, exercise, and calories eaten daily, and tells you if you are on the plus or minus side of activities-to-calories. But the BEST thing by far for me is the database of restaurant foods and calories. I travel 80% of the time for my job and had no real idea of how many calories I was getting - obviously a LOT more than I thought if I was 60 lbs. overweight! I do not blame restaurants for this, although I do wish they would provide more reasonable portion sizes and give patrons more healthful choices. However, the information we need to make decisions about where and what we eat is available if we want it. Calorie Counter is not the only program out there, and you don't need a smart phone - there are programs for your PC or laptop, and you can get most restaurant nutrition information online.
