I can see that this is an old topic, but thought I would throw in my 2 cents nonetheless.
I too was born with a Preauricular Ear Pits and did not have to have them removed until I was around 18. (I am 31 now) They started to consistently have an odor and discharge. The time of romantic interests were starting up for me and therefore I became very self conscious of them smelling or having discharge.
I did not have any issues with the surgery, which was done by my ENT doctor in his office. The procedure took about an hour and a half and other than the small sting of the local anesthetic, there was no pain. The SOUND was a little disturbing...it reminded me of paper tearing, really, really close to my ear. Knowing what was really going on was strange, but not life altering. I have small indentions on each side and only have mild itching, deep down, where the pit used to be, every now and then.
I did not, nor do I, have any kidney issues (kidney stone once, but that is unrelated) and also have no hearing issues.
On adverse: My mother was a little sad to see my "ear holes" go...she always thought it was her little baby's something special. I think, 13 years later, she might be over it now. View Thread
