Last week, the two oldest siblings went to get established, get their physical, and receive a flu shot. After much ado, they got vaccinated so now it was their youngest brother's turn this week. He put up a greater fuss then the other two combined! Since I told him it was painless, he finally tried to bargain- if I got my shot first then he would get his.
The doctor was quick to point out that I couldn't because I had already received it and couldn't get it again. This sent him reeling so I asked the doctor if I could get a shot of some sort of placebo just so that he could see me get an injection.
The doctor was quick to agree to the idea so he ordered up some low-dose Novocain and had his nurse administer it. My stepson was very keen to watch and make sure I got it. When I didn't so much as flinch, he agreed and got his flu shot.
The things a parent will do to ensure a child's health! Please don't castigate the Doctor's exasperation. Have you had a situation similar?View Thread

As far as the FluMist, I did ask about it but they said they are not primarily a pediatric office so they didn't have any. I asked for that strait away because I knew the needle was going to be a big issue.View Thread

When they found them, they were very cautious and resepctful in making sure that you and your parents were descretly notified so there is no chance of embarrassment. They are, after all, trying to protect the fragile egos of children.
When you went to the doctor's office to get rid of them, they would have had you head shaved and a cream slathered all over your head to kill what's left.
Looking back, I just love the irony! They're quiet to tell you that you have lice and expect that secret to be kept when you show up the next day bolohead (bald)!View Thread

This first one, I found, actually worked quite well! The first time I got stung by a bee, I thought my world was coming to an end. It hurt like nothing that ever knew! My grandmother, quickly and deftly, put some mud on it. The mud, she told me, would dry up and pull the stinger out of my hand along with the associated venom. I don't make it a habbit of anoying anything with a stinger so I haven't had the opportunity to hone this skill.
Your recipe for a combination of honey, whiskey, and lemon was called a "Hot Totti" by my grandparents. My grandfather, who swore he never drank a day in his life, used this remedy every time he had a cough. Now that I think back, I'm surprised I didn't hear more forced fake coughs around the house...
I was an ADHD child back before they had a name for it. My family said I was just hyper. To curb my hyperactivity, our family doctor actually told my parents to put some stale beer in my bottle! This should tell you that I was probably not of legal drinking age...
I don't know if there is some sound science behind it or not, but gargling warm salt water (our ratios were always quite high on the side of the salt) always did the trick when it came to soothing a sore throat. It's something that I still practive today, only I've learned to go a little easier on the salt.
Since they came from a farm, this last one was a surprise to me. It's one that I actually taught to my grandfather. He started to steer clear of pizza because of heartburn. I told him that he could drink a glass of milk and it would quelch the burn. When he tried it, you would have thought I invented sliced bread!View Thread
