On May 14 & 15, HBO will air its "The Weight of the Nation " series that will explore obesity in the U.S. WebMD is going to be following the show with our own series of blog posts starting next week. The facts are certainly disturbing.
Why do you think Americans are fat?View Thread
As for the kids though, the government has provisions in place for people like this and I'm sure she is constantly under the watchful eye of DCFS. When it comes to our government, the only thing that I have a tangible faith in is their damage control. If it gets too out of control they will have to step in to avoid looking like bad. Until then, I implore you to continue reviewing this issue. Keep sending money to support her kids and watch it go towards her porn career, because I'm sure that will make a nice, shocking story as well.View Thread
Considering that parents conceiving children the old-fashioned way often still roll the genetic dice, do you think that the FDA should require genetic testing of sperm donors and their sperm before they are allowed to donate?
Why or why not?View Thread
The downside would be too many new friends you didn;tknow you had
I would if I won call my children and split it with them right from the start
get my phone unlisted would be a good move too LOL

I will definitely look at the doctors info but I really appreciate your experience better. Oh and yes my hubby is worth all of the patience and work in the relationship I'm not a person that views divorce on "irreconcilable differences" as an ok reason. Love is tough but when you unselfishly work for it then it can be very rewarding. Plus we both come from split families, so were not big fans. Thanks again for everything!View Thread
You should have called a manager and helped the woman that was hurt, it isn't your job to discipline a stranger in a grocery store.
Sorry to say but jayblackman had a point. If you had taken my phone and hung up on my call I would have knocked you down and taken it back. What if she was talking to a hospital about a sick family member, doing a phone interview for a potential job that called her with no notice, or was taking some other important call? You had no right to put your hands on her or her property, no matter what she did wrong.View Thread
13 years ago, he had a partner and they shared the consultations and rounds. When she retired he found himself on his own and hasn't been able to find a replacement for her. We're 20 miles from the nearest city, in a rural area, and young doctors don't fancy that. They're rather work 9-5 ... sigh. My doc has a tough time even finding a replacement so he can go on vacation. Last year, he managed to find a locum for 3 weeks. The locum called him back after ONE week because he couldn't take it and walked out...
So, yes, my doc probably makes a lot of money but what is the point in that if he never gets a chance to SPEND the darn stuff? If I had a magic wand, I'd give him 4 decent vacations per year with no worries about finding a locum until he felt rested and restored enough. He needs TIME not money and he deserves it.View Thread
Spring cleaning at our house starts in the garage. We seem to collect all sorts of interesting things in there over the year. I blame my husband. hehe
We always save our bedroom for last. It seems to be the catch-all for everything else, so as we're cleaning we move questionable things in there and it is the final toss-out decision space.
I love the feeling of freshness after spring cleaning. It feels like a weight has been lifted.
I HATE trying to get the whole family motivated to work together. I always seem to be dragging someone back into the fray.
I voted myself Neat Freak in the poll, even though my kids call me OCD. I like things in their place, but I have learned over the years to chill out and let some things go. With 5 people living in a house you'll drive yourself nuts if you try to keep everything always in place.
Deep breaths, Butterfly...deep breaths. LOLView Thread

I refrain from including my wife's or sons' names in any of my posts. I never would think about including my last name in a post, my phone number or even my e-mail. Once you post something in a public area on the internet, it is there permanently for the world to see.
I am an administrator on a private website and those folks know my family members names, and more intimate details. I still am very careful what I post there.
If anyone ever searches via Yahoo or Google for their screen names, they may be surprised what is found.
Now, as far as how I reply to posts - I try to be encouraging and supportive. I will admit that I have had a few posts deleted for inappropriate content in my long history as a WebMD Communities member. Sometimes it is hard for me to ignore what someone is posting, even though I know I should. I keep hoping that the 'ignore' button will return and we can set it up so we will never see posts from people who upset us. Until then, I am trying to be as gracious as possible and keep my posts informative and uplifting.View Thread

They don't have any bedside manner anymore and don't seem to give a damn about the patient's feelings. Well, that and seeing my weight. lol. Man I'm a grouch.

My 30 something yr old brother in law is a real jerk. He encourages my nephew to make jokes at others expense (usually mine, because of my weight) and he is just an embarrassment to go out in public with. Sunday morning breakfasts in public are like torture...he sits there and complains loudly about everything, makes nasty comments about his wife touching him in inappropriate places (when she isn't). I've all but given up on going out to eat with him.View Thread
I learned about "sex" at school when I was in 5th grade, and it did an alright job. However, my mother was the primary educator, always keeping an open dialogue. But when she passed away when I was 10, I moved back to my father's and in 8th grade, I was supposed to attend another sex class. My father being more conservative refused to let me participate in the classes, which only hurts the child.
Children are naturally going to be curious and if they do not hear about sex from responsible adults, they will find ways to subsidize their education. With easy access to the internet, it's not hard. This is a problem though, because as these children strive to learn about sex, they end up taking lessons from the porn industry. They think that it's appropriate in an intimate moment to shove the girls head down hard on your penis making her gag. (sorry about the visual) Graphics aside, this is becoming a serious issue.
Frankly, there are too many shy, conservative, spacey, negligent-what ever it is you want to call them- parents out there that do not do a good enough job at addressing the issue. So when the institution of the family fails, where can the children turn? Certainly not to church. Schools have an obligation to fill the void and responsibly teach our children about not only sex, but many aspects of human sexuality.
Here's a great NPR article that disuses the issue.

#1 -- She's FUNNY! Her comedic timing is spot on.
#2 -- She's sharp. At 90 years old she has somehow managed to keep her mind honed and stay in touch with the "now". Maybe it's just good genes, but I think most of us would like to think she has taken care of herself mentally and physically.
#3 -- She stands up for animals. I love that she puts her love of her pets into advocacy. It's great, and I am sure it helps keep her motivated and focused.
When I am 90 (or heck, 80) I'd love to be as sharp as Betty White. She's a great role model for aging well.

1) The definition of autism has changed to be more inclusive.
2) Environmental toxins.
The definition has widen to include a broader spectrum known as the autistic spectrum which can include "high functioning autism". Hence greater the numbers.
But that does not explain the large increase. Doctors who have decades of practice are personally seeing more and more cases come in through their doors. Whereas in the past, their encounter with autistic is quite rare.
This I believe is due to environmental toxin. Areas near industrial plants have greater incident of autism. Some believe that autism is an auto-immune related disease. And auto-immune diseases are on the rise and environmental toxin is suspected. All the foreign elements in our environment such as pesticides, vaccines, mercury, is confusing the immune system and/or not allowing it to develop properly. Hence, the immune system incorrectly target self cells.View Thread

In addition, it is outrageous that insurance companies can negotiate deep discounts from Providers while the uninsured are billed full price. Why do I say that? Insurers take at least 30 days, sometimes much longer, to pay. Uninsureds don't get a discount even if they pay in cash immediately. That's unless the uninsureds have to negotiate for themselves - who reading this has negotiated with a Provider?
From the Washington Post article ,
"The players sitting across the table from them — the health insurers — are not so profitable. In 2009, their profit margins were a mere 2.2 percent. That's a signal that the sellers have the upper hand over the buyers."
That IS misleading, for the reasons given by jenlewi .
Their profit margins may be "a mere 2.2 percent", but their executives are some of the highest paid in the world. And those SAME executives have already obtained waivers to the Affordable Care Act. Their employees WILL have annual caps on the amount that can be paid for health care. Guess they don't want to chance having to take a million or so a year pay cut...
http://ezinearticles.com/?Waivers-to-Affordable-Care-Act&id=5251038
I believe a big part of inflated health care charges occur because Providers assume they will have to apply huge discounts that insurance companies negotiate.
I hope everyone reading this takes the time to read the hotlinked article.
Many of us recognize that health care costs are a HUGE problem. And many of us cannot see how it can be brought under control because of the influence of health insurance and pharmaceutical lobbies.
( at the rate of 24 MILLION dollars a month!)
Also from the article:
"They do this in one of two ways. In countries such as Canada and Britain, prices are set by the government."
Yet another government bureacracy?
Generally Not a good idea. However, the mere threat might bring about a bit of pricing sanity...
How to reduce the influences ....
Hmm ......................................
Term limits could do it!
That's been proposed and discarded in the past.
Well, WE can do it without the legal system.
Regardless of party affiliation or presumed past performance, do NOT reelect ANY congressman! NOT ONE.
Make being upset COUNT.
