Its hard to say if you will need it the rest of your life. The medication works on your serotonin level and the best natural ways to keep your serotonin levels high are getting a lot of sunlight and aerobic exercise. Being an outdoor runner controlled my mild depression and anxiety for most of my life without needing meds. I didn't need an SSRI until 7 years ago when I had a traumatic experience that kicked it into a higher gear. It hasn't changed my personality and it helps a great deal. Its not addictive so you can come off of it later. If you don't exercise I highly recommend 4 or 5 days of aerobic exercise lasting at least 45 minutes.View Thread

Alaska mommy is right. I try to exercise every day to help my depression but sometimes when I haven't gotten enough sleep the night before, sleeping in helps more than trying to get the workout in. Exercise is great, but if your overdoing it your just going to feel tired all the time.View Thread

If you can't afford or refuse to take medication again then you have to try the natural remedies to combat depression. The two most powerful ways to release serotonin are getting a lot of sunlight and getting daily exercise. Take advantage of anytime that you can get outdoors in the sun. The exercise needs to be aerobic exercises such as running, biking, swimming, ect. that elevates the heart rate. A vigorous workout of 45 min to an hour first thing in the morning improves my mood for the rest of the day. Hope this helps and good luck.View Thread

From my experience, if you were feeling better but then relapsed that means your dose isn't strong enough. 20 mg of celexa is not that much. If Lexapro worked well before, see about going back to that. Good luck.View Thread

Don't be against trying a different medication

What they say is true; each person is different on what med works best. I had been on Lexapro for the last 3 years for depression and anxiety. It definitely helped and made me functional, but I still didn't feel really good. I had heard so many opinions that Lexapro was the best so I just figured this was the best I could feel using a medication. Finally 2 weeks ago I had had enough and went back to the doctor and discussed it. I decided to make a change to Cymbalta and I feel much better after just 2 weeks on Cymbalta than I did for 3 years on Lexapro. My tip is just be open to making a change if you don't feel the med you are on is doing enough. Another one may work much better.View Thread

Hi. I've gone through the same thing in the past. The correlation is that OCD is an anxiety disorder and most of the time anxiety and depression go together. When my depression is bad I have a lot of guilt feelings about the past and have low self esteem. The key is raising your serotonin levels through medication or exercise or a combination of both. I'm a runner and for years the aerobic exercise was enough to keep my anxiety and depression under control. Now that I'm older, the exercise alone doesn't do it so I've needed to add an anti depressant which works both on anxiety and depression. I would talk to your doctor about various options. Good luck.View Thread

Natural Remedies

I have had mild to moderate depression for most of my life and finally gave in and went on medication 7 years ago. I have recently done some "natural" things that have helped quite a bit and allowed me to be on half the dose of my medication that I used to be on. These are well known but they work. The first and most important is outdoor sunlight. I wake up in a down mood and just walking out the door to get the paper on a sunny morning provides an immediate lift. If you are able to get outside for an hour or two in the morning, that will really help. Even sitting outside at work on your lunch break helps. The second is vigorous aerobic exercise. I try to do at least an hour of either running or cycling. The more vigorous without totally exhausting yourself, released the brain chemicals that lift your mood. Serotonin is the chemical that is released by the outdoor sunlight and aerobic exercise. If you can combine the two, you will get the max benefit. Indoor exercise helps but if you can do it outdoors with sunlight benefit also, its a great mood lift that lasts all day. People with severe depression might not be able to get themselves out of the house to do this. However for mild to moderate this will really help.View Thread

Being unproductive is the most frustrating part of depression for me. I can get myself to work pretty much every day but as far as everything around the house, they don't get done. Then when the chores build up, I'm mad at myself for letting it slide. I also deal with the irritability. I go off for any little reason. I hope you are open to professional treatment and start feeling better soon. Best of luck.View Thread

Hello all. I have had chronic depression and anxiety for the past 10 years. I have been on medication the past 7, do tons of exercise, and still had problems. I had read about acupuncture and three weeks ago finally got up the nerve to give it a try. I noticed a big uplift in my mood after the second treatment. I've had six treatment now and I feel tremendous. I had found that my health insurance covers 24 treatments per calendar year. I know it can be a little scary to have needles put in your body but it doesn't hurt. I even fell asleep during my last treatment. I hope this helps some of you that don't get relief from other treatments.View Thread

I'm sorry you are in such despair over your job situation. Try to remember that the poor economy the last few years has put many millions of people in the same situation as you. Hiring is picking up now so there is hope. In the meantime what about volunteer work? You'd be surprised at how good it makes feel to help other people. This would give you a reason to get up everyday and help your self esteem until you can land a paying job again. Best of luck.View Thread
