I have idiopathic edema meaning unknown cause. Water retention throughout my body. This is not caused by diabetes.
I also have venous insufficiency which is causing swelling of my lower legs. This condition is caused by the blood flow going both ways. This condition also caused me to have many severe spider veins and large varicose veins my treatment was Sclerotherapy, I still need a procedure done for the venous insufficiency. Not caused by diabetes.
I would suggest that you see a vascular doctor to start out with to see if your swollen legs are caused by your veins.
Other possibilities can be one's heart, kidneys and/or the bladder. Weigh yourself daily in the AM if you are gaining more than 3-5lbs a day it would suggest a water retention problem and it needs to be addressed.
My diabetes is in control A1c 5.5% in June 2013. I still have swollen legs. So please be checked out to see what the cause is. DebView Thread
NutriJoy, I am currently on a low fiber diet - limited to only 15gms a day my dr. says that might not change. My carbs right now are no more than 20gms at meal times (3 a day) my snacks are salads or Greek Yogurt Plain 9gms per serving. Right now my protein intake out ways my carbs and fiber, can't afford another bacterial over growth problem due to a motility issue.
We will see what happens after surgery, I was told that if my sugars climb Metformin is NOT an option, I'll deal with this one day at a time. Thanks again DebView Thread
Surgery is scheduled for July 10th. I guess in my case it is called an ileostomy because of the lack of colon.
I will go on a 7 week clear liquid diet just before. Now I get all the regular appts. with PCP for the blood work etc.....recoup time is about 6 weeks or longer. Then I have to go and meet with the stoma dr. for training etc.....
I just found out I will be seeing my colon surgeon on Tuesday because I am in need of having to have a colostomy. I need to get things in order and see my PCP. The surgery as my doctor put it will be asap I have no choice.
The surgery I had in 2010 with a 4ft removal of colon just brought me some time.

I totally agree with what the others have to say about we need to eat what works for us.
My latest food plan is not an easy one but it has to work for me: I am on a very low carb, very low fiber, high protein, gluten free food plan.
Let me tell you there isn't much I can eat but I am not hungry or starving. My protein only comes from Salmon, egg beaters and Greek Plain yogurt, NO RED Meats. Very small amounts of fruit. I do eat lots of salads with veggies. I am drinking only water and/or black coffee and once a day 6oz of low sodium V-8 veg.
My diabetes is still in remission, exercise is still just walking (do to many health conditions) and in the last month I have lost 5lbs. We have to watch my weight loss as they don't want me to lose much more. My Drs. gave me my food plan according to my health issues.
Again as it has been stated "what works for one might not work for others" If what is working for you stay with it - if not get the help you need so the food plan works with your body.
Diabetes is not curable but it is manageable - sometimes it does take medicine, sometimes not.View Thread
