My blood sugars are usually in the seventies or eighties fasting. (T2 no meds). Lately they have been in the nineties, fasting. So I started to test my blood sugar before going to bed and sure enough, they are in the seventies to mid eighties. But higher in the morning. Do you think this is a warning sign of future trouble? I am thinking that if it is 80 when I go to bed at night then it might be going lower as I sleep and to counter this the liver starts pouring out more sugar, thus causing the high morning reading.
I have not changed eating or exercise patterns and wonder why this is occurring. I do notice that when I am losing weight my fasting blood sugars do tend to be a bit higher and I am slowly losing weight. I know that fat in the diet can increase insulin resistance and I believe I read that when you lose weight, you are essentially on a high fat diet. The last blood test I had on May 1, they only did a fasting blood sugar and no A1c and the number was 80.
Has anyone else had lower sugars at night that rose in the morning?
I never heard you were supposed to drink eight glasses of water if you are diabetic. Are you saying that dilutes the sugar in the blood? I did read that if you are eating lots of protein as in the Atikins diet then you should drink lots of water. But fruits and vegetables have water in them so you can drink according to thirst--or not, I don't know. At any rate, this is something new to me.
I was told by someone who had difficulty drawing my blood once that I should drink water before I had my blood drawn and it would be easier to draw. I guess that would increase volume--thereby making the draw easier?View Thread
Was just reading that acid blocking medicines like metformin can reduce your absorption of B12. I do not know about other diabetes meds. I guess it would be a good idea to know if the diabetes (or blood pressure) med you are taking might deplete some vitamins.
Someone can answer this. I thought that doctors started you on a low dose of Metformin to see if you can tolerate it. I thought the therapeutic dose of Met was at least 1500.
Also, you know I am going to say to eliminate all meats, poultry, fish and dairy, eggs, sugars, oils and other fats and processed food. Eat brown rice and potatoes and sweet potatoes and corn and oatmeal and vegetables and fruits and beans. This is basically a McDougall, Esselstyn, Barnard, Ornish, Fuhrman type of plant based diet.
A friend of mine told me today that my blood sugar is too low. It is in the low seventies, fasting. She said it should be in the nineties. I have been diabetic for more than twenty years and use only diet and exercise to control blood sugar. She is on meds and a little insulin. Am I correct in thinking that those on meds and insulin might correctly try to keep their sugars in the nineties, fasting, but on no meds 73 or 74 is not a dangerous number? I am t2 but she is probably neither 1 or 2 but at one time had pancreatitis and some sort of gall bladder and other health problems and it has been about a year since the doctor said she also has diabetes.
Thanks. It is sometimes in the 80's but I have gone off a beta blocker which I believe raises blood sugar (and also lipids) so numbers in the 90's were not unheard of. Also, because of hip surgery have had to cut back on cardio exercises and am mostly doing hip rehab exercises. So I really don't know what is normal yet for me and will have to wait until I am back to my more normal activities. I wonder if my friend's doctor gave her that information? I will have to ask where she got it.
When diagnosed, my blood sugar was around 345. This was not fasting and a re test fasting was 245. Was put on a sulfonylurea but after a few weeks, without the doctor's permission stopped the drug. Used diet and exercise and a Pritikin type diet. I was (and am) most definitely diabetic. Went to the doctor originally because I was so fatigued I could hardly get off the couch, drank constantly, urinated constantly, had blurry vision. It was an easy diagnosis. First Aic was 9. Last year I was tested at 5.4. Have not always been compliant to good diet. Had a heart attack last year. Doctors did not believe I was diabetic. Went through cardiac rehab and lost more weight. Had hip replacement after falling in kitchen so exercise, except for hip exercise is curtailed.
Blood sugar this morning, 78. Blood sugar yesterday (I took it twice) was 83 and 75. Yesterday I had oatmeal, banana and strawberries for breakfast. Only a banana for lunch as I was not at home. At four or so in the after noon had a huge lettuce and raw vegetable salad with beans and potatoes added. (No oil in the dressing) For dinner had lots of brown rice and butter beans with green beans and canned diced tomatoes.
If something is working for you I wouldn't change it. My comments are only for those who find their meds increasing and who have erratic or rising blood sugar numbers. And maybe high lipids. I do not worry much about post prandials. My own can be high or low depending on what I eat, how much, exercise, if I have a cold or am stressed.
More than twenty years ago the doctor told me I will never be cured of diabetes (which I believe) and that complications are inevitable. Since my MI I have been 100% plant based--no meat, dairy, oils, eggs etc. I am not real optimistic about heart problems because I allowed them to put a stent which unknown to me at the time was drug eluting. I am not confident about total recovery because I believe that the stents and plavix are bad news. We shall see. However, I have no neuropathy, retinopathy or kidney problems. No cataracts or macular degeneration. My ejection fraction is in the sixties--normal. Who knows what the future will bring? I have diabetic acquaintances who have undergone dialysis and amputations and friends who have had second by passes and 4 or 5 additional stents placed. Absolutely they refuse to give up meat, fat, dairy, eggs and believe in "moderation". If something isn't working why would you continue with it?
One gets all the protein one needs as long as calories are sufficient. I do take B12. And as a sun avoider my D levels are ridiculously low. So I guess I should take D also.
