Hello all,....Long story coming up.... I also had gestational diabetes in 1997 when i was 6 months pregnant with my son. At the time i did not have very good advice and it was around the christmas vacation. The midwife said " don't worry it will go after the baby is born. Just do not eat anything sweet until then. HELLO .... Christmas.! How hard it was not to eat my aunts xmas cake etc. Anyway i did my best. After my son was born every thing seemed to be fine until a few month later i was incredibly thirsty! My doctor then informed me that my diabetes was back they checked me and told me i was a type 2. I received tablets that seemed not to work and my internist decided to place me on insulin realizing that i was actually type 1. I am not over weight or do i have any other complications (yet) diabetic 16 years now. I have been doing my own research and because of that i have managed to go on an insulin pomp that works for me it is called an OmniPod. I also use a DEXCOM which i love because then i do not have to prik my finger all the time. Its is really quite accurate. The only thing is i have to have 2 items stuck onto my skin instead of one. But it does not have any leads! so that is also handy. I have become accustomed to the fact that this is a life long illness and it need to be dealt with the best way you know how. That way is read up on the information yourself and do not relay on the Doctors to tell you everything. Only you know your body best! Use them to help guide your thinking and make slight additional inputs when necessary if it is not working. You can only do this if you also have knowledge. Its easy to be fed up. and let loose. believe me i do but I also check my sugar levels to make sure i put the right amount of insulin in...that takes time. You need to understand your body. and no the food does not have to be boring. I eat Ice cream, a sweet or apple cake. But i weight until my level is Low then i have an excuse... maybe that is not the right way but it works for me. Their was a few years when my sugar level would spike up and down like a" jojo". That was because I ate something sweet not even something over the top. but it contained white sugar. because of that it was racing high. So I think...OOPs then i would take too much insulin to make it go down but not waiting long enough for the insulin to react in my body i would look an hr later and think nothing is happening or its way too slow and take a little more.Then i would have the opposite effect. Then in the middle of the night i would have to either get up to take food and early in the morning i would have to check my sugar and see that it had risen too high. Hence the jo jo effect! now i know it take about 2-3 hrs to absorb into my systen and only then do I decide what my next step will be. So all you type 1s. It is possible to take control of your diabetes... I am a more relaxed person now than I have ever been.
