My Story:

I had undiagnosed gestational diabetes with all 3 of my pregnancies in the 1970s, my children weighed in at 10 lbs, 9 lbs 15 oz, and 9 lbs 2 oz. Large babies are very common in my family, so is diabetes, heart disease and strokes.

In the 1980s I began having intermittent diabetic symptoms, but nothing showed up on tests, other than an occasional borderline high number. The doctors always said I was "fine". Yet I had all but one symptom [ED] on the list in the advertisements for diabetes. I could have been their poster child. I tried to 'watch my diet' but had no clue on how to do so.

About 1999 or 2000, I began with neuropathy symptoms in my feet, and the nurses where I worked were sure it was diabetes. A new PA arrived at the clinic where I was a patient, and he never checked my sugar--I seriously doubt that he even read patient charts or medical histories. He claimed to "know everything there is to know about diabetes" and to know all about me. In 2003, I insisted that he check my blood sugars, and it finally showed up as diabetic. He was totally PO'd at me for getting diabetes, apparently he thought it was MY fault that he was incompetent. Also I was dx'd with an enlarged liver that year, and he insisted that I was an alcoholic and wasted my funds on booze [his reasoning for why I was not able to pay much on my doctor bills]. He ignorantly insisted that alcohol is the ONLY cause of liver problems. I do not drink, never have. However, I have been exposed to massive industrial toxins back east where I was raised, and at work at my last job. I was exposed to many toxic chemicals there as a housekeeper at the local nursing home. I got into it with him, and the clinic kicked me out... That turned out for the best for me. I now have better docs, and have been getting better medical care.

I am retired now due to my health, and enjoying my retirement.
