I have been using the Free Style Lite for three years. It takes the smallest amount of blood sample than any other meter and the strips react very fast to the blood sample to give a very fast reading. The strips accuracy varies from box to box of 50 by about 8%. For example, a reading of 108 from one box will get a reading of 100 or 116 from another box.The strips cost me 67 cents apiece. Overall I am quite satisfied with them!View Thread

I also just had an eye exam (Feb 25,2011) and the Dr. said I had the beginnings of a cataract. I asked which eye and he
said--- both. He also said they were probably caused by my diabetes even though I have tight control- A1C's of 5.8 for
past 18 months!View Thread

You have mentioned that bread is a weakness. Have you tried Pepperidge Farm Carb Style bread? It has 8 carbs and 3
grams of fiber per slice. I have 2 slices a day and I don't spike!View Thread

Metformin is the gold standard of oral medications. Lots of people can not tolerate Metformin because of the diahrea but they can tolerate the extended version of Metformin which is
Metformin ER. Do research on this and then ask your doctor about taking this version of Metformin. As you have suggested there are at least 5 or 6 other oral medications that are available for you to take -- do the research on them and then talk with your doctor about them.View Thread

I agree with Phototaker that a document should be given to people by their Doctor on notification that they are diabetic. This document would contain all the info that Phototaker has mentioned in her post. At the same time the Doctor should give the patient a list of Diabetic buddies that have agreed to help newly diagnosed diabetics go through the document. A follow-up appointment should also be scheduled in one or two weeks to discuss the patients progress and answer any questions.
The diabetic buddy can be of tremendous support during this initial shock phase of the patient.View Thread

As soon as I was told that I was a diabetic I began to check
labels. I use to drink 6 cups (each 6 ounces) of coffee a day
and I used 1 tablespoon of French Vanilla creamer per cup.
The label states that a serving is one tablespoon per cup at
7 carbs. That means I was drinking 42 carbs a day(6 cupsx 7 carbs) just from the creamer. That is equivalent to an extra meal just from these carbs every day. I immediately stopped using the creamer.View Thread

I am just now looking at how much sodium I consume in a day. I
already count the number of carbs so that I can monitor my type 2 diabetes.
When I open a can of vegetables I always throw out the liquid and use the vegetables. The can states the sodium content on the nutrition label but that has to also be for the liquid that I threw out. Since I don't use the liquid I believe the sodium content of the remaining
vegetables is considerable less than what is stated on the nutrition label. An example is Del Monte sliced beets which has a sodium content of 290mg for a serving and the can has 3 1/2 servings. Since
I throw out the liquid I don't believe I should count the one serving as
290mg. But I don't know what a reasonable mg would be, does
anybody out there have a good guess on how to estimate this mg?View Thread
