Off topic to Betaquartz: No kayaking for us in the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel this year. We went twice last year, but we had my grown daughter with fibromyalgia with us this year and wold have had to take a large, heavier canoe for 3 people with her sitting on the bottom in the middle for the 2 hours. Her pain level would not permit that, so we deferred the kayaking until next year. View Thread
Photo - I just came back from a 2 week vacation with LOTS of constant walking around and not sitting still. -- Lots of 1 mile beach strolls with bending for shells, swimming in the gulf and in the pool with arm and leg exercises with the noodles, hardly any reading, sitting, or TV time. My home test A1c dropped .4 points down to 5.7 in just one month although the morning fasting numbers had stayed about the same. I also ate as usual during this period -- small lower carb meals more often.
My main discovery/rediscovery (since the same drop has occured after many past periods of constant travel and activity) is that for me keeping moving so that the food (carbs) eaten get used up continually, brings down the A1c. Any time I exercise heavily and eat a normal meal afterwards, that sugar remains in my system longer and at a higher level because my body is not using up that particular meal -- so -- it all adds up in the A1c.View Thread
Just for the fun of it, why don't you post back with some suggestions that you think would be good to bring down your blood sugar.
Start by reading Dr. Dansinger's blog at the top right hand corner of this page. Tel us how many carbs you are now eating per meal and what you feel are the bad carbs and good carbs. What med are you taking 1000mg of ? Do you take this all at once or in divided doses? What time of day do you take your diabetes med. How long afte breafast and how long after lunch are you testing to get that 105 reading? How long have you been diabetic and what measures have you taken to get it under control? Have your meds increased or your weight increased? What happened during and after your trial with the Atkins diet?
Lots of questions I know, but your answers will help us a lot in giving you more suggestions.View Thread
I usually don't eat sweets at all but here's a 10 carb peanut butter & "Jello": 1 slice 5 net carb Healthy Life bread, toasted, 2 T natural (no sugar added) peanut butter (5 carbs), and Strawberry Jello sugarfree (0) snack container (premade). Yum! Be sure to eat some protein with it, like a slice deli ham to slow down the entry of the 10 carbs into your blood. The fat in the peanut butter will help also.View Thread
I just read an article on where to get your Omega 3s. Concerning sources of Omega 3 oils, walnuts (1 1/2 oz. per day - about a heaping quarter cup measuring cup) lowers your LDL - bad cholesterol, while fish oil raises the HDL - good cholesterol, but also raises the LDL a bit. Several weeks before my last blood work lab, I ate salmon every morning, also nuts, and also omega 3 capsules to equal 3 grams total of omega 3s.
My total cholesterol was up because I had stopped taking statins, but my HDL was 70 and therefore the ratio of total cholesterol divided by the HDL was much lower ( a good thing) than the previous test. I sometimes feel that my body is a chemistry lab. I did that for an experiment and will get another blood lab next month.
I have cut way back my cheese intake and red meat. I enjoy testing my response with the total aim of tweeking my diet for the best health maintainance.View Thread
Beta, I just checked all three kinds of plain Fage Greek yogurt. Full fat has 23 grams fat, 7 grams carbohydrate, and 15 grams protein; 2% has 4.5 grams fat, 7 carbs, and 15 grams protein, o% contains 0 grams fat, 9 grams carbs, and 20 grams protein. I use the 0%.View Thread
I use my fat free greek yogurt instead of mayonaise, especially in slaw, chicken/apple/walnut salad, shredded carrot salad, tuna or salmon salad, and best of all about 1/3 cup of it topped with Hershey syrup (just a bit) or no sugar cocoa powder and put in the freezer until just firm for a high protein, low sugar "ice cream". This also works with fresh berry toppings.View Thread
If I am tempted to throw caution to the wind on a trip or vacation or restaurant meal, I just go to the meat counter in my local grocery story and pick up a 5 pound package or hamburger and visual that spread throughout my body and in my cells causing even more insulin resistance.
Even worse is the thought that even though I can gain 5 pounds easily in a couple days, it takes at least five WEEKS to get it back off again without starving or going low.View Thread
