"... When people come to see me, either in private or at a program, they come to see me as a health professional because they are not well. Usually they have advanced heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, auto-immune disease, etc etc and often they may have already had several by-passes, stents and/or even a stroke or two and are on multiple medications. In addition, these days, most are overweight and many are obese.
Many of them, as stated above, have already been following a plant-based/strong/perfect diet and/or vegan diet (some for years) and are coming to me because in spite of this, they are still not well. ..."
My comment: - I don't buy that argument! Why they don't just make a study to qualify what does constitute a 100% compliance to their low fat vegan diet of choice, in their mind? Is one cookie a week (99.9% compliance) a significant or an insignificant non-compliance? Is one portion of fish a week (98% compliance) significant? The onus of the proof lies on their territory, otherwise you wouldn't never know!
Why would they not carry out a comparative study with 90%,95% and 100% compliance? Would there be any difference?

Abstract
150 microg iodine are daily required for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has intrinsic mechanisms that maintain normal thyroid function even in the presence of iodine excess. Large quantities of iodide are present in drugs, antiseptics, contrast media and food preservatives. Iodine induced hyperthyroidism is frequently observed in patients affected by euthyroid iodine deficient goiter when suddenly exposed to excess iodine. Possibly the presence of autonomous thyroid function permits the synthesis and release of excess quantities of thyroid hormones. The presence of thyroid autoimmunity in patients residing in iodine-insufficient areas who develop iodine-induced hyperthyroidism has not been unanimously observed. In iodine-sufficient areas, iodine-induced hyperthyroidism has been reported in euthyroid patients with previous thyroid diseases. Euthyroid patients previously treated with antithyroid drugs for Graves' disease are prone to develop iodine-induced hyperthyroidism. As well, excess iodine in hyperthyroid Graves' disease patients may reduce the effectiveness of the antithyroid drugs. Occasionally iodine-induced hyperthyroidism has been observed in euthyroid patients with a previous episode of post-partum thyroiditis, amiodarone destructive or type II thyrotoxicosis and recombinant interferon-alpha induced destructive thyrotoxicosis. Amiodarone administration may induce thyrotoxicosis. Two mechanisms are responsible for this condition. One is related to excess iodine released from the drug, approximately 9 mg of iodine following a daily dose of 300 mg amiodarone. This condition is an iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis or type I amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis. The other mechanism is due to the amiodarone molecule that induces a destruction of the thyroid follicles with a release of preformed hormones. This condition is called amiodarone-induced destructive thyrotoxicosis or type II thyrotoxicosis. Patients developing type I thyrotoxicosis in general have preexisting nodular goiter whereas those developing type II thyrotoxicosis have a normal thyroid gland. The latter group of patients, after recovering from the destructive process, may develop permanent hypothyroidism as the consequence of fibrosis of the glandView Thread

Take a group of breast or prostate cancer patients and have one group keep their protein level around 5% and let the other group continue to eat as they always have probably 20% protein.
See which one is better off after intervals of 1 yr,2 yrs,etc.
Is that not a simple way to test who is right?
Dr Ornish did a study with a low fat,low protein, vegan diet along with flax that slowed the rate of prostate cancer growth.Maybe that is an indication that Dr Campbell is on the rigjht track?View Thread

I have had multiple sclerosis for 5 years. I have visited many neurological clinics and many biotherapeutic doctors without any visible results. My legs had limited movement and I only could walk from "Arkadia" to my hotel with difficulty. The movement in my legs has improved from the time I started the Optimal Diet and I have managed a 2 km stroll. I am full of gratitude to Doctor Kwasniewski. I am 34 years old. The first symptoms of my multiple sclerosis appeared 10 years ago. I developed double vision, weakness of my legs and right hand, and speech abnormalities. I have been treated twice in hospital and by herbalists. I also took microelements. None of this has stopped the progress of my disease. The Optimal Diet recommended by Dr. Kwasniewski has improved my health. My legs have became stronger and now I can walk longer distances. My speech is normal. My general health has improved and my hand is now all right. I have lost 3 kg in weight during my stay here. I am leaving "Arkadia" full of hope that by using the Optimal Diet the improvement in my health will continue. I thank Dr. Kwasniewski and his personnel my renewed health.

Abstract
CONTEXT: Mono- and polyunsaturated fats may have opposing effects on vitamin D absorption.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether intakes of different dietary fats are associated with the increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) after supplementation with vitamin D(3).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This analysis was conducted in the active treatment arm of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of vitamin D and calcium supplementation to prevent bone loss and fracture. Subjects included 152 healthy men and women age 65 and older who were assigned to 700 IU/d vitamin D(3) and 500 mg/d calcium. Intakes of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and saturated fatty acids (SFA) were estimated by food frequency questionnaire.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The change in plasma 25OHD during 2 yr vitamin D and calcium supplementation was assessed.
RESULTS: The change in plasma 25OHD (nanograms per milliliter) during vitamin D supplementation was positively associated with MUFA, (β = 0.94; P = 0.016), negatively associated with PUFA, (β = -0.93; P = 0.038), and positively associated with the MUFA/PUFA ratio (β = 6.46; P = 0.014).
CONCLUSION: The fat composition of the diet may influence the 25OHD response to supplemental vitamin D(3). Diets rich in MUFA may improve and those rich in PUFA may reduce the effectiveness of vitamin D(3) supplements in healthy older adults. More studies are needed to confirm these findings.

The majority of North Americans require sunlight to meet their needs for vitamin D because they do not meet their needs from the foods that they eat. Many people in temperate climates therefore are deficient in vitamin D by the end of winter. Lack of vitamin D impairs a person's immunity and ability to produce insulin and respond to insulin. This study shows that giving vitamin D pills to Type 2 diabetics during the winter improved control of blood sugar levels by increasing the first response of insulin from the pancreas to a rise in blood sugar, and by improving cell response to insulin. If this study can be confirmed, all diabetics should take vitamin D-rich foods or pills whenever they cannot get adequate exposure to sunshine.

I am trying to find some long term published studies on the high fat "Polish" diet. Here is what I found to start. Testimonials. Are they more persuasive than the testimonies of McDougallers or Fuhrman dieters?

I call them "looser's" theories because many people fail maintaining their good health all the while are clinging onto them as if they were religious dogmas even thought every one of them has already been contradicted by decades of anecdotal stories, cases stories, scientific research studies and the known principles of biochemistry and the evidence-based medicine.
It is not shameful to be wrong. We all have been to some extent, for a time being, but It is imprudent to persist being wrong while ignoring the evidence!
If you ignore reality and act against your own self-interest, you will eventually get what you want - failure!

He mentioned that the minerals in vitamins were a definite factor in causing alzheimers and we should use supplements that say vitamins only.....and contain no minerals at all.
The research is new and links metals like zn,copper,iron and others to alzehimers.If you saw the program you know the mechanism involved but its to much for me to post here.Maybe the program is available on the net.View Thread

So why are we debating the merits of one diet over another? And why do more and more young people become fat and get diabetes? And why do people get strokes and heart attacks at younger and younger ages. And why is one child out of 110 autistic? An outrageously high number.
Is the answer the consumption of more and more food which has been tampered with by unrestrained agricultural interests? Something else in the environment?
I am beginning to wonder if what is in the cards is in the cards and if we are only kidding ourselves by thinking our chosen diet will improve our health.
