"We speculate that adult vitamin D deficiency could exacerbate the progression of a wide range of other brain disorders such as multiple sclerosis, dementia, and depression."
Did you notice how prevalent is vitamin D defficiency among vegetarians, even in the southern states, and to some extent in the general population? I have seen also a paper that hypothesized a link between common vitamin D defficiency and the vitamin D blocking effects of a diet high in wheat, due to WGA (Wheat Germ Agluttins). This also agrees nicely with the observational data correlating wheat consumption with cardiovascular, diabetes and cancer (for example China Study data) - and the fact that D defficiency correlates with the same diseases.
It could also explain the therapeutic effect of the high animal fat diet against neurological diseases, not only MS (see those testimonials I posted last week) but also depression and schizophrenia (unpublished, private communication from a doctor I knew). The effect is probably compounded by four factors:
(1) direct benefit of animal fats (for example DHA, EPA, some of the SFA such as lauric acid etc) upon the neural cells,
(2) decreased glycemic load reducing the harmful effects of excessive glucose metabolism on neurons, especially pronounced in the presence of stress hormones (see my blog post on Sapolsky's lectures)
(3) direct supply of extra vitamin D3, - it is abundant in most animal fat-rich food, and last but probably not least:
(4) reduced consumption of WGA rich plant produce such as wheat and beans.

"The diet consisted of potatoes, supplemented with butter or pork fat with the addition of a few fruits (apples and pears); tea
or black coffee and sugar were also occasionally taken. The amount of fat consumed was not accurately estimated, it varied from 120-150 g. daily."

I am 35 years old. I have multiple sclerosis. Treatment by an outstanding specialist did not give the expected results. As my health worsened I could only drag my right leg and to take a step was not possible. I came to Arkadia on 2 February, 1988 as my last chance of recovery because of the passive medical attitude.
Dr. Jan Kwasniewski greeted me very cordially and assured me that the progress of the illness would be stopped, and further treatment at home would bring improvement. What a nice surprise when after 6 days I noticed the first symptoms of improvement. With my leg which I could only drag I could now take a few normal steps. As the days went by my improvement continued and now I can raise my leg enough to place my foot on a window sill. This is after only 10 days of treatment.
It is pity that Dr. Kwasniewsk's reputation is not more widespread. He is a hero of the twentieth century. [br>Bogdan Kowalski (Mr), Swiecie 15 January, 1988

I have had multiple sclerosis for 5 years. I have visited many neurological clinics and many biotherapeutic doctors without any visible results. My legs had limited movement and I only could walk from "Arkadia" to my hotel with difficulty. The movement in my legs has improved from the time I started the Optimal Diet and I have managed a 2 km stroll. I am full of gratitude to Doctor Kwasniewski. I am leaving "Arkadia" very happy.[br>Wieslaw Szczepanski (Mr), Inowroclaw

I am 34 years old. The first symptoms of my multiple sclerosis appeared 10 years ago. I developed double vision, weakness of my legs and right hand, and speech abnormalities. I have been treated twice in hospital and by herbalists. I also took microelements. None of this has stopped the progress of my disease. The Optimal Diet recommended by Dr. Kwasniewski has improved my health. My legs have became stronger and now I can walk longer distances. My speech is normal. My general health has improved and my hand is now all right. I have lost 3 kg in weight during my stay here. I am leaving "Arkadia" full of hope that by using the Optimal Diet the improvement in my health will continue. I thank Dr. Kwasniewski and his personnel my renewed health.

His skills were badly misused by the society he chose to live in. He was first rejected by the academics who didn't understand his ideas, and by the militarys who only used him to calculate nuclear fallout. He had no sponsors, no sanctuary and almost nobody to talk to. Not even in his family. I had a feeling that his son still has no idea about his dad's work and is baffled by the interest.View Thread

I know exactly what you mean. I think its because I grew up in Europe where the most un-yielding and the least tolerant political thinking (and most of the establishment!) associated itself with the collectivism. Communisms, socialisms, corporatisms, fascisms and other collectivistic "isms". I noticed that in the USA (but not in Canada) it is the opposite! You have experienced a lot of #$%@ups of the conservative-religious-right kind of types, while the collectivisms are awaiting yet to be fully experienced in the Unites States (and hopefully rejected).
I think, the un-yielding types seem to be really the same kind of minds, on both sides of the Atlantic. We are really tallking about the same phenomenon using different words.View Thread

Did you try following some of your thoughts out beyond the point where they supposedly vanish?View Thread

My short comments on Pritikin express my view. That' a sub-optimal diet, for example a low fat vegetarianism may work for someone who was so strong-willed super-enthusiastic and dedicated to the cause like him, but perhaps not for very long and not for others. The key tests are: "can it be replicated?" and "do contrary examples exist and if so why?"

I am avoiding posting the links since when I posted the direct link to it here, the post disappeared, probably spamcoped.View Thread
