I think if I had healthy, delicious food available all the time, I would have no problems sticking to a food plan. I end up grabbing whatever when I'm hungry and usually make bad choices.
You've inspired me to go to the store!

I saw the episode too. I've never done Weight Watchers. Do they still do it that way? I have a friend who joined and they wouldn't let her take her shoes off to weigh in. She quit (I'm sure she was just waiting for an excuse to do so, but...). The episode does put in perspective how we can put too much emphasis on what the scale says.
On the other hand, in a twisted way, I had to laugh when January Jones squirted Reddi-Whip straight into her mouth.View Thread
Looking at ways to increase this value, I find a vitamin supplement that is 1000 mcg tablets, 1 a day. From other literature, I see this tablet is 16,667 percent daily value. Kind of strong you think?? Can you help me determine, for my own info...what daily value I'm getting with the current lab results? What diet/food choices I can make that would raise the daily values so that the lab results are higher, 90 days from now?? I'm asking your opinion before I consult a doctor. What do you think??View Thread

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. - Will Rogers
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. - Will Rogers
I've read a few articles that differ in opinion, but generally I've gathered the following: I should consume a combination of complex and simple carbs 30 minutes prior to working out to burn fat or a combination of complex carbs and protein 30 minutes prior to working out to build lean muscle. Is this correct?
Post workout is even more of a mystery. I used to drink a whey protein powder smoothie comprised of one scoop of whey powder (GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60), water, frozen strawberries and bananas. Then I read an article about a carb/protein ration that must be achieved post workout (.15 grams of protein times my weight and .25 grams of carbs times my weight). To achieve this I substituted water with fat free milk. The milk, whey, and fruit gave me the perfect ratio and provided some much needed calcium (very tasty smoothie as well). That lasted a few weeks until I read an article that milk slows down the absorption of whey, so I changed my post workout shake to just water and whey. I also so a few blogs that suggest I consume my protein immediately and then follow it with a meal consisting of more protein and carbs.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT. The amount of information on the internet is so overwhelming. The studies, opinions, blogs...they all seem to contradict themselves (e.g., Earlier tonight I saw a study from 2006 that said carbs post workout is bad. On the very same website I read an article that discussed how vital carbs are post workout). Please tell me what I should be doing pre and post workout. I feel like I'm always on the verge of doing something totally wrong and the more research I do, the worse it gets. lol
To put it more succinctly:
1. What types of carbs (simple or complex) and/or protein should I consume pre-workout?
2. How much protein (and carbs, if necessary) should I consume post workout? If I am consuming carbs post workout, which type?
3. Should I consume my post workout protein with my carbs to meet the ratio (e.g., like the smoothie I mentioned above made of whey, fat free milk, and fruit) or should I consume my protein with water followed by a meal of carbs and more pretein?
I know this is a lot (sorry). Thank you in advance for your time.View Thread
Breakfast is 2 hard boiled eggs without the yolks, and a banana. If I DO deviate from that I have plain oatmeal. Lots of water during breakfast and up until lunch.
Lunch is a Lean Cuisine entree and a lot more water. Mid afternoon if I have anything it's fresh veggies like cucumbers or carrots. With more water.
Dinner time is the time to be creative. I will always start with ground turkey or ground chicken on meat days, and salmon on fish days. Where I go from there is the creative part. Some nights I fry the turkey with some chopped onion, add some baby leaf spinach and wrap it in a gluten free tortilla. Other times I boil it in a little chicken stock and add some brown rice.
Night snack depends on my mood. Some nights will be a cup of raspberries. Other nights I may have tuna right from the can to get the protein burst if I am having hunger pangs.
Basically I have a bunch of food "modules" that I treat as interchangeable parts. I am more into counting carbs and fats and getting a lot of protein than counting calories. It's worked in the past and I'll keep you posted.
So what is your average day like?View Thread
If you eat 1200 cal and exercise moderately most days of the week, the weight will come off at the rate your body will determine. 1lb a week is also quite acceptable and healthy, and will get you to your goal eventually, maybe 3 months.View Thread

Muscle and fat are two different tissues. If you exercise on a routine basis, combining both cardio and strength training, you'll be decreasing the amount of fat throughout your body. Some areas may drop fat first. That's because where you store fat is highly influenced by your gender, age, genetics, anything else. Click here to read the whole post:

1 serving of protein (3-4 oz which is about the size of the palm of your hand)
1 serving of low sodium vegetable, try to eat raw or steamed
1 serving of carb, try to switch from regular white potatoes, to sweet potatoes or Peruvian Blue potatoes as these are more nutrient dense , try NOT to eat white pastas or rice, tend toward whole grain stuff
And remember 1 serving of grains or pasta isn't alot, read the label. ONLY EAT 1 Serving.

One of my favorite columnists, Joel Stein, wrote the following in a recent Time article...
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2113162,00.html
Here's a few excerpts...
"Since thin people can't enjoy life, we eke out pleasure by telling fat people how to lose weight, as if they don't know. Cook! Plant a garden! Read this posting of fast-food-menu calories! Buy fresh produce! Bike to work! Do stuff skinny folk would never do...
...But if you're living in an impoverished community where the future doesn't look like a rewarding adventure and instead requires all your energy to figure out how to get by this month, you're unlikely to focus on activities with long-term benefits such as studying, saving, marriage, being drug-free and spicing up quinoa. In their 1988 paper "A Theory of Rational Addiction," economists Gary Becker and Kevin Murphy argued that shooting heroin is a logical choice when all you're giving up is a crappy existence. It also explains why so many people do drugs when listening to Phish...
...I asked Charles Duhigg--whose brilliant book The Power of Habit is about how to trick your brain into making better decisions--what a better solution is. He said telling people to eat well so they'll live longer is idiotic. "The No. 1 way not to form a good habit is to say, 'In three months I'm going to look a lot thinner.' There's no way you can say the long-term reward is going to outweigh a sugar rush," he said. "If you see doughnuts on the counter, it will feel really urgent that you need a doughnut. That's your basal ganglia." One proven way of turning people off doughnuts is to talk about basal ganglia..."
The point is this...
Say, they discover that, by wearing "hairy" pantyhose, you can remove cellulite. Nice to know but what good is it?
Yes, eating a salad before every meal is the answer but, suggesting that people do this is insulting. Its pointless. Its no different than wearing "hairy" pantyhose.
Joel made me realize this...and, with that said, I'm really, really, sorry.
