Dietary fiber has many functions in diet, one of which may be to aid in energy intake control and reduced risk for development of obesity. The role of dietary fiber in energy intake regulation and obesity development is related to its unique physical and chemical properties that aid in early signals of satiation and enhanced or prolonged signals of satiety. Early signals of satiation may be induced through cephalic- and gastric-phase responses related to the bulking effects of dietary fiber on energy density and palatability, whereas the viscosity-producing effects of certain fibers may enhance satiety through intestinal-phase events related to modified gastrointestinal function and subsequent delay in fat absorption.
In general, fiber-rich diets, whether achieved through fiber supplementation or incorporation of high fiber foods into meals, have a reduced energy density compared with high fat diets. This is related to fiber's ability to add bulk and weight to the diet.
Cellulose is also an advantage of herbal weight-loss products. Let's take Meizitang , which I found on the internet, as an example, it contains the extract of green tea as an important ingredient. Green tea provides not only a variety of enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, caffeine, but also cellulose or dietary fiber. What's more, herbal products require simple raw material and manufacturing process, which certainly reduce the cost of producing.

My first thought is that I would have hoped WebMD would provide a more structured and productive forum for those of us that are dealing with weight issues. Regardless of the product, this person tried a weight loss approach for " a few days" and has not lost as much weight as she would like. I have not meet a person who tried any diet or new health/exercise program that has lost as much as they would like in only " a few days". As the moderator has mentioned, weight loss takes time and effort. Why was this not addressed when reading this persons comments?
Secondly, the post should not be considered valid since the person bought the treatment from an unauthorized seller. What was in the container? Who knows where it came from? For a person to make some dishonest money, all they have to do is put some powder, like jello of psyllium as the person suggested, in any branded container and sell it for a lot of money. In fact, maybe there was actually a laxative that was added and it caused the diarrhea.
I did go to the Roca Labs website and found the formula contains beta-glucan, konjac in a high-fiber content. I have used beta-glucan for an appetite supplement and blood glucose stabilizer in patients with type 2 diabetes. The medical literature strongly supports this. I have not used konjac but there are similar medical reports. High-fiber, as we all know, is healthy and when taken before a meal, results in a slower, more gradual absorption of sugars allowing for a reduced blood sugar spike after a meal. High amounts of fiber also cause a "fullness" feeling as well.
Lastly, some people respond very well to a treatment plan and the next person may respond poorly. For example, penicillin effectively treats most strep infections, but not all. Would it be reasonable for someone to write on these pages that penicillin is a terrible medicine because it did not rid them of a strep throat infection?...of course not.
I simply feel that these Internet discussions should be presented in a reasonable manner on reputable sites, like WebMD, and this persons report of any diet was poorly represented and should not be taken seriously.

But after encouragement because one internal hemorrhoid was found a couple years ago, and I have one diverticuli, and fiber is supposed to help reduce cholesterol etc...I decided to use metamucil, (I like the wafers) I have upped my usual diet of fiber up and over 10 grams a day. 10 grams a day more than I usually do. I never looked for fiber and probably never even had more than 10 grams a day anyway.
I now have stool that is hard to pass. I drink 32 oz at least a day of water, so I know I am taking in enough. Frankly I am having the opposite effect of what the label says lol.
I eat fruit, but frankly this wonder drug of fiber does not work on me, and I have been at it for over a week.
Could it be my normal diet is sufficient and this really is having the opposite affect on me?
I just eat them because they fill me up, and I don't over eat if I eat two wafers..but whats up with all the hype of fiber?View Thread

turned into a "label reader" and finding that just about everything has
some cholesterol in it.......except for fruits and vegetables! I'm not buying anything that contains cholesterol. Am I doing right - or does
the body need some cholesterol? HELP! I'm hungry!!!View Thread
I usually have take many bathroom breaks when I drink green tea but today when I started the drink I went to bathroom more than usual. Do you think because of the drink..?? Well, whatever works cause I want my metabolism to work more. I go to gym at the apt and do the elliptical for 30 minutes at a steady pace. I work out with my swiss ball at home with sit ups for stomach. I watch my diet, but I always had a sluggish metabolism my whole life. Maybe with this drink which I really like the taste, my metabolism will start going.

When I went to the website it looked more like a "dietary supplement" for weight loss. I'm all about trying it if its like a detox and is going to fill in some of the holes of my nutrition. But diet pills are a scam.
Does anyone have more information on whether its a nutrition supplement that's benefits happen to make it easier to lose weight. Or is it just another weight loss pill.View Thread
This may sound similar to some of the posts already in here... I am a 32yr old mother of 5yr old boy. I am trying to lose since last 2 yrs. Problem is I am not keeping at it. I do exercise for 2-3 months, don't see much results and then I quit with the feeling that if this is not helping why should I waste my time at exercising vs doing something I like better.I know its hurting me in the long run..
I just started with a new routine from yesterday after I recovered from an Ankle injury. I don't want to do the same thing again and want to keep up with the exercise even if I don't see results. What would you suggest I should do when I hit that plateau and get the thought of quitting ?

I am a 29 year old female who has been battling weight issues my entire life. Over a five year period I have lost 35 pounds and kept it off, but cannot seem to lose anymore. I am still classified obese by my insurance company and have been trying all sorts of over the counter diet pill to assist in my weight loss. I have been eating well (lots of veggies, proteins like chicken, salmon, fruits, etc.) and excercising 6 days a week, as recommended by my insurance carrier. My issue is this, I have been without a PCP for about five years, as mine retired. During this time I still visited my lady doctor, dentist and eye doctor (even a podiatrist for my bunon). So I decided it was about time to get a new PCP, so my friend recommened me to her doctor. I saw him yesterday for a routine yearly check-up. Towards the end of the check up I asked him his opinon on prescription diet pills, specifically phentermine, as I know someone who has lost 30 pounds over a 2-2.5 month period on it, and they swear by it. This is where I may be over-reacting, he started to laugh and told me "we don't do that here". He began to go on that it is a narcotic and that there is no long term proof that it works, basically he made me feel like crap! I didnt know anything about this medication except that it worked for my friend, I didnt know it was a narcotic or that you have to go to a diet specialist to have it prescribed. I felt like a drug addict, and I am not, I didnt even know what the medication was, hence asking my new PCP about since I didnt think my lady doctor, dentist or eye doctor would know much about it. I started to think about the person who referred me, and she gets pain medication from this doctor, ALL THE TIME, AND HE CALLS IT IN FOR HER TOO! I guess I am just appalled at the manner this doctor responded to my question, almost juding me, and basically shaming me for even asking about it. I also am still bothered that he said "we dont that here" (talking about the diet pills), but yet he prescribes pain pills freely to other people. Am I over-reacting? Is phetermine that bad and is it more addictive than pain pills?View Thread
Now if that doesn't boggle your mind, nothing will.

For people who favor limited consumption of dairy, I'm providing this list of common foods high in calcium.
Here's the list...
1. Dried Herbs (parsley, sage, oregano, cumin, basil,
2. Sesame seeds
3. TOFU
4. Nuts
5. Green Leafy Vegetables (Kale, Spinach, Bok Choy)
6. Fish
- Calcium and phosphorus are essential materials for teeth, bone, hair, etc...
- Vitamin D is the catalyst that allows the body to metabolize calcium to make teeth and bone. Bones undergo constant replacement throughout our life. Vitamin D has also been found to fight disease and illness and play an important role in weight loss. Vitamin D is the reason why sunlight is critical for good health; it's manufactured by your skin when exposed to direct sunlight. Vitamin D Supplementation may help but it's no substitute for sunlight.
it's going to be a complicated diet because of different medications etc. and for many "sicknesses or diseses i've been diagnosed with. the quick run down to my situation is as follows. I am a 50 year old male with a history of asthma, typeII diabetes, hepC,seasonal depression (Christmas time) arthoritis ....in Jan 2013 I was diagnosed with my second pulmonary embolism,(the 1st clot was back in 2004 and after several months of warafin treatments i ended up with an intra abdominal bleed and nearly died....stopped the coumadin until now.) Since the "PE" in Jan. 2013 I am on the coumadin again sadly. My protime numbers are 2.3....2.5 so that is fine. My blood glucose has been off the chart with many readings in the 4oo plus range. Two weeks ago I ended up in the ER with severe pain in my lower abdomin fearing internal bleeding again but after another CTscan (second since the PE in Jan. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis oh yea. In the mean time My Dr. retired so i'm left with some pretty bad stuff i had to discuss with my new Doctor. he's a very good Dr although he did rubber glove me on my very 1st visit......pay backs grrr
Now I will stop rambling, give you a list of my meds...with alll the new ones too. and then I would like to know what the heck I CAN eat with all of my symtoms and meds conflicting. If you tell me to eat pizza, ice cream, whole corned beefs, tator tots, LOBSTER/w/butter and did i say ice cream?? I will be your best friend and live a happy life til I drop. lol

Xopenex:45mcg 2 puffs every 3 to 4 hours if/as needed
cimetidine:300MG 1 tablet twice a day
norco:10-325MG 1 tablet as needed every 6 hours

just yesterday i finished my regement of cipro and flagyl for the diverticulitus and we stopped Amaryl. the registered dietitian gave me a list of foods and portions to help me loose weight and control my diabetes. she also told me "if it tastes sweet it has sugar...so NO" Half of the stuff on her "good" list are things that will hurt my diverticulitus (whole wheat bread and nuts etc.) and the other half is full of vitamin K and will affect my PT levels. how can I please all the practicing Drs and still try to be a little happy myself? I'm looking at the pros and cons and I'm thinking "would it be better to just drop dead and be fairly happy the rest of my life eating what I want and getting off all the meds? Or be an uptight grumpy old man walking on eggshells and jumping through hoops inbetween medicines, Dr.s appts, and carb counting? plus the fact that I'm scared to death being on the warafin. I was a tree trimmer/climber/logger all of my life. I have many chainsaws and other sharp things i cant operate due to warafin. i'm on a fixed income so I need to be able to cut my OWN firewood to keep warm as it's my only source of heat in the winter. I love to hike in the remote forests and canyons but with my blood being so thin and the special diet, blood tests, meds that have to stay a certain temp, and all the rest of the "dos and don'ts" I've really lost my motivation.......help! I guess I'm just frustrated and I'm venting. I will respect any input or advice. one last question, how do you stop the cravings for Butter Pecan Ice Cream? ha ha

1. Obamacare. Beginning in 2014, expect appointments to see your regular doctor exceed 90 days, plus. If you need to see a specialist, it may take up to 4 to 6 months (or more).
2. The cost of drugs are fast becoming unaffordable even with insurance and even for generics.
3. Preparing your body (weight, blood pressure, blood glucose & cholesterol) will become the smartest and cheapest way to prepare for retirement.
4. Working until age 70 (and beyond) will become a financial necessity.View Thread
