Sometimes the patient has to be the sensitivity lesson.
It's no use blowing up at people because they will only hear rage, not the words. If you have to write a script to take in with you in order not to get the whole go-around, do so.
At my heaviest, I kept begging my internist to refer me to a hospital treatment plan. As we went through the exam, everything she said was related to my weight. I would repeat my request, getting more tight-lipped each time. Finally I said, "Well, that's what I'm here for: to get help with my weight."
With a huge sigh, she wrote me a referral.
Later, when I went in for my physical as I approached a normal body weight, she confessed she had issues with food, too. THAT was when I wanted to scream. Had she said that when I was fat, I would have been so much more open to her.
You can also buy your own blood pressure cuff and gown so that you don't have to go through that humiliation.
Stick with the people who get what you're saying -- come back & talk more!View Thread

Hey, Kris -- Welcome to one of your tribal homes. I hope you check in not only with your progress but with your discoveries & frustrations. Anonymity is a wonderful freedom to really be yourself, to explore the service you do us by sharing your journey & softening what is such a lonely path, & to discover that there are no "bad" feelings (unless you're, say, a psychopath -- LOL), only feelings that are often directed by some other, root feeling & which, as you go through detox, are sometimes scary simply because the Tribe isn't used to having many feelings beyond shame (which is itself directed by the root cause of compulsiveness & self-neglect & a chemically starved brain.
Sorry to go on so long. I'm charged up for you & by *The Hunger Fix* & I want you to know you are accepted for your very own self and that you've helped me this morning.View Thread

Two other factor are hanging fire here, though.

- If diabetes runs in your family, or breast cancer -- just as it does for coronary disease for your guide -- you are much more vigilant about regular check-ups. And yet this attitude is not true of fat: why?
- If diabetes runs in your family, or allergies or schizophrenia, you are much more vigilant about watching out for your kids' health, which includes medical check-ups, menu-planning and exercise, and the general environment you create in your home and parenting style. The same has to be true for overweight. in ways, it's a lot more complicated to watch out for a child's disposition to gain weight than it is to watch our for her or his blood sugar, so you'd better get really creative and positive in your parenting roles.

I'm not "there" yet but because I have a consistent food plan, even when I cross that line my food will change very little. I'm going through a lot of stress now and I find that I have to remind myself frequently through the day that, just today, if I don't eat off my food plan or cause bodily harm, I can't really fail. This might not be true every day but right now it is and when circumstances change so that I might be fired or rejected, I will probably find that the area of failure isn't really all that big. I'm the one who brings stress into my life and it's my kindness to myself to try to minimize the impact of people, places and things that make me see monsters under the bed. Prayer helps simply because it puts my foibles into words that remind me what I need to do -- not overeat, not be stubborn about taking action. Gratitude is very helpful because it reminds me of how lucky and how safe and taken care of I really am. And forums like this, where I can speak my truth, are essential. Thanks everyone for being here.View Thread
