Hi dkjgray, thanks for posting all your updates...I had replied to you a couple times last year. Besides your latest issue, I hope all is well with you. It does sound like a possible adrenal/hormonal problem. It sucks, you can work out so much and not lose weight because of those pesky hormones! I'm not looking forward to it (I'm 38)
Here's a book I can suggest, maybe you can see if your library has it first before buying...What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. It was fate how I found this book! I'm a veteran and was at my chiro appointment a couple years ago...the VA hospital has a cart full of free books and magazines for veterans to take (some kind of Friends of the Library thing!) Well, a hardcover of this book was there...in fact, it was a hardcover of two books in one: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause and What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. Needless to say, I snatched it up and have read it cover to cover, so I'm prepared for the inevitable! Hope this helps and you learn something to help you with hormone regulation.
Yes, people are making money off the sick and overweight. Even here, people leave ads left and right for pills, programs, books, etc.
Losing weight slow and steady gives the best results. Shows like The Biggest Loser and Extreme Weight Loss, plus THOUSANDS of weight loss books perpetuate the "lose weight fast" promise.
I wonder after the Affordable Health Care Act is fully into swing, will health insurance companies finally start focusing on preventative medicine and start focusing on getting people truly healthy? Canada puts its focus on preventative medicine, and even rejects unhealthy products to be imported (certain preservatives are banned, as well as evil Monsanto dairy, soy, etc) because its citizens pay higher taxes but get free healthcare in return.
Also, many Japanese practice hara hachi bu, which is to eat until you feel 80% full. But whether it's the Japanese, Koreans, or Chinese, they all eat way smaller portions than here in the U.S. And they have relatively healthier snacks, too. Funny you mention that. I noticed people's sizes around Starbucks...now, I thought coffee was supposed to be a low calorie beverage. I guess if you're having a daily dose of venti caramel frappuccinos, it adds up over time!
Also, went to In and Out once during my husband's vacation because he wanted me to get him a hamburger to go...I'd make baked fries at home (he's skinny, watches what he eats, and only has In and Out once a year, or once every two years--no other "junk" food, or red meat for that matter). As you can tell, he's not a vegan like me! Well, was waiting for the burger and noticed...not one average sized adult! I just wanted to share a few of my tips on how to lose weight effortlessly. Please add your successful weight loss tips!!!
1) Do not "go on a diet." You are going to restrict yourself, feel guilty, punish yourself and binge!
2) Love how you look now. Embrace all your curves, lumps, and bumps and "imperfections." Years ago, I couldn't lose weight because I hated how I looked and almost subconsciously sabotaged myself...I felt bad about my body image, which led me to eat junk food and feed my sugar addiction! Only when I stopped judging myself did I lose the weight.
3) Don't take diet pills. They should be called yo-yo diet pills because they will work in the beginning (most likely due to the placebo effect), but you'll gain the weight right back--and then some.
5) Cook with less processed cooking oils! Use a tablespoon or two of orange juice or broth instead! Think of all the calories you'll save...plus processed vegetable oils are not healthy for you.
6) Drink water with meals. I have been doing this for many months now. I used to drink fresh squeezed orange juice or carrot juice with dinner (both from Trader Joes)...and they are tasty and good for you...BUT, by switching to water, I'm not drinking my calories away. Again, these are little things to reduce overall calorie consumption. It will take you a week or two to get used to just drinking water, but now it feels normal...and you can really focus on the taste of your food!
7) Instead of focusing on dieting and losing weight...focus on your health, on living a long and healthy and vibrant life! More people are living longer in the US due to medical advances, but unfortunately, they are living longer with debilitating diseases and conditions! Focus on your health, and the side effect WILL be weight loss.

9) Finally, there's nothing wrong with finding inspiration with a health guru or two! Here's a few that inspired me to get healthy...that's when I started to lose the weight. Not sure if I'm qualified to be an exercise buddy, but I can help you decide what no-impact activity to do! Try a rebounder...that's a mini trampoline. I've been using one for months now. I have a foot condition, and a rebounder is great, doesn't cause pain or flare ups. I got one of the cheapest ones on amazon. Here's some articles that talk about the benefits of rebounding:
Have to agree, protein powder is the best bang for your buck. You can consume a fairly large amount of protein for few calories. It's quick to drink, and when you find the type you like and blend it with fruit and your favorite beverage or liquid, it can be quite tasty.
I used to use whey protein powder, then I switched to either hemp protein powder or brown rice protein powder. All of these protein powders have great--but different--amino acid profiles. You can do more research on that, if amino acids interest you.
Also, other foods contain protein, so you don't have to eat just meat. I don't eat meat, and I get all my protein from grains like quinoa and oatmeal, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and as mentioned above, protein powder. Some brands of non-dairy milk also add additional pea protein.
Plus there's yogurt, non-dairy for me (coconut milk or almond milk is what's in it), and regular low fat dairy for you. Low fat cheese also has lots of protein. So as you can see, there's tons of ways to get protein besides meat!View Thread
I know why you're asking...I just tried googling chair gym calories burned...and I got nothing!
A good rule of thumb is that for any kind of light activity (yoga, slowish walking, light ballroom dancing, gardening, etc) burns about 4 calories per minute. Any kind of heavy activity (running, intense aerobics, etc) burns about 10 calories per minute). And any moderate activity is somewhere in between.
I'm going off memory from my Calorie King book, by the way!
Depending on how hard or how leisurely you pedal on the recumbent, I would guestimate you could burn anywhere from 4-8 calories per minute...
Good luck with the weight loss...remember, slow and steady wins the race. Even if it takes you all year to lose the weight...that's a great accomplishment! A few years ago, it took me all year to lose 15-20 pounds...and I've kept it off!
