You may not ever get this because I just realized how old this blog was..., but if I was told I couldn't have any more children before I had the surgery and have been blessed with two red heads and one little beast man and have met my best friend in the world... Yes, I have a lot of medical problems still, but I had a chance to experience everything that I couldn't before... I just had pancreatic surgery in March of this year for the same problem that you are having, overproducing insulin and being hypoglycemic except they found a tumor... I know that your whole pancreas can go bad from the surgery now... and I have a lot of information about what you're asking about and suggestions as I've been dealing with the sugar problem for a long time now... My big problem was that the hospital where I had my surgery closed a year and a half after i had my surgery and I moved so I was notified where the doctors went so I had no long term follow-up... I know the tests that you may need to figure out what's going on and which doctors and what kind you could contact to help...View Thread

If your mom is anything like I was after I had my gastric bypass, I was ashamed of it... I didn't want anyone to know I'd had it because I didn't want anyone to know that I couldn't lose the weight no my own... It makes you feel worthless... I just wanted to share some advice and let you know how she might be feeling...View Thread

Thank you for writing this... They are sending me to talk to a neurosurgeon about getting a neurostimulator placed in my back... I had a spinal fusion in my lower back in 2005 and have bulging discs in my neck now (C4-5) and I've gotten two steroid epidurals right now and the dr said he's leary about doing anymore in my neck and that he wants me to talk to the neurosurgeon, but I'm not so sure why he's so set on this... I've heard pros and cons of having neurostimulators placed in my body... thanks for your post...View Thread

When I had my gastric bypass in 2002, I was so scared, I almost left the hospital and they took me in to talk to a woman who was about to have a roux-en-y who had already had the stomach stapling procedure... She reminded me that I was doing it to see my daughter grow up and told me she'd wished she'd had the surgery we were both having done in the first place... Everyone that I have talked to, has told me that the gastric bypass is a better surgery and has better outcomes for weightloss than the stomach stapling and I've lost at least 163 lbs now...... I hope this helps...View Thread

I've been getting iron infusions and blood transfusions since July of 2004.... Your body isn't retaining the iron because one of the benefits of the surgery is that you don't digest everything you consume and iron is one of those things... One of the things that you'll notice is that you can build up your iron and your hemoglobin will remain high and that your body will take the iron from your iron stores... Your ferritin level dropping will be a factor in determining whether you need iron...
I'm not a doctor so this may not be the case for everyone, but I actually can tell physically when I need iron or blood now... I get dizzy, forgetful, I lose my balance, I don't get headaches like people generally do with anemia though... same things can happen with low B12, but these are generally things that happen when my iron is low so I know that I need to ask them to do my iron studies... hope this helps... BTW, I am currently taking B12 injections every week and have been told by a number of other people that they have to take injections as well now... I look at it like this, me having to get iron infusions just means my surgeon did a good job at accomplishing at what he was trying to set out to do in the first place...View Thread

Also, if anyone has any information on diet or vitamins this far out, I would love to hear from you... I still need to take my weekly B12 injections, but I need to get back on a healthy bariatric diet and not a lot of people or hospitals know what that is... I want to be here to see my three beautiful babies that the surgery gave me grow up and that includes me relearning how to take care of myself... so, if anyone has information, please contact me and have an awesome day.... There is the possibility that my tumor is coming back or that my whole pancreas is going bad because I am still having problems with my blood sugars... and I have had a number of problems with my back and bone degeneration which is something handed down in my family so I may lose the ability to walk, but thanks to the bariatric surgery, I will have the chance to be here.
REMEMBER, always live each day like it's your last day on earth because no matter how bad you feel, you never know what the unexpected will bring; whenever you feel down, think about how it could be worst, how there are others with lives that are a lot worst, how there are others who keep going when they have no brighter future to look forward to... and we have the chance to see the future, to make others smile and to contribute to society in general because no matter what type of person you are, how much you can do physically, every person on this earth can contribute... REMEMBER... you can change a person's whole life in an instant by just smiling at them or saying hello... people forget that fact...
God Bless Everyone and remember something else...
The road you are thinking about beginning might be scary, it may be hard at first, but it will be so worth it in the long run...View Thread

Hi,
I'm 11 years post-op Roux-en-Yk, May 21st, 2002, and it really helped me lose weight also and if anyone wants any information, please feel free to contact me also...
I was 358 lbs and now am at 195 except it didn't all come off at once and now, this past year, after a lot of medical problems, I've found out that I have an insulinoma on my pancreas which was probably a majority of my weight gain problem in the first place... As a result, I had pancreatic surgery last March and lost fifty pounds between May and August alone and am still losing weight... I just found information suggesting I've had the tumor for at least fifteen years, so, for anyone out there seeking to have gastric bypass, before you have the surgery, be sure you are checked for any other medical problems, such as having pancreatic or thyroid problems... Ten years after the fact, I am finding out I may have not needed the surgery... I also have found out that the roux-en-ys, which aren't typical gastric bypass procedures any longer can cause the pancreas to go bad in the long run... I had to have several tests to find out if it was the tumor or the surgery... I don't know if they do a catscan on your abdominal cavity now to look for tumors, but back then it wasn't a normal pre-op procedure for bariatric surgery and a regular A1C can not tell a doctor whether a person has hyperreactive problems with their blood sugars... It took years for anyone to actually listen to me when I told them that my sugar was high and then it would drop the way it did and, at first, I thought it was just certain foods causing it to do this... I actually could control for a couple of years and then I found out I actually had no control over it at all... The consequences of this can make your life crazy... I would be hypoglecemic fifteen minutes after starting to mow the grass, I though having a cold sweat when working out was normal (IT ISN'T...), I would get forgetful, light-headed, get stressed out easy, I thought all of this was due to the bariatric surgery and it wasn't...
I want to reiterate that I am in no way saying that gastric bypass does not help because for people who are way over weight as I was, it can give you your life back... For a number of years after the surgery, I was given more life back than I had ever had... I had three wonderful babies that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world after the surgery, and being able to participate in activities that I didn't enjoy as a kid because I was overweight then was worth the surgery... It just didn't take off as much weight as it should have on me and the surgery does not do everything for you... People need to realize that fact before having it... You have to do the work... I enjoyed doing tae kwon do and various other physical activity after the surgery, it gave me peace of mind and a time with my children that I never would have enjoyed otherwise... I was told before the surgery that I would not live to see my oldest daughter graduate from junior high and I have lived to see her become twenty years old, married and have children of her own... that would've never happened if I hadn't taken the chance...
Please, if anyone has any questions, I have a lot of experience with the anxiety that it can cause beforehand and preparing for the unexpected, please contact me...View Thread
