A year and a half ago, I quit smoking. My mom quit smoking 17 years prior and gave me some tips. One of them included remembering that if I smoke again, I'll have to go through all the withdrawls again, and I did not want to do that. So, I didn't smoke. I ate food. Lots of food. Almost a bag of potato chips a day. Not cool.
Gradually, my weight steadily rose up from 120 to 160. At 5'9", I'm still in my BMI, but hitting close to my limit. I was excited at first at my weight gain because I began to develop curves where I had not had them before, but then I got the reverse shelf at the bottom of my stomach and have since trying to figure out and motivate myself to loose it.
My current job has access to WebMD during down time, so I am here now. I've been reading articles, utilizing the tools, and slowly, very slowly working my way down. I'm setting my goal to 10 lbs at a time. My goal is less to be in a certain weight, though, and more along the lines of being more fit, and to be comfortable in my body at a beach again. Even though I'm setting weight goals, my goal will be attained when I feel comfortable myself. Even if I don't reach my ultimate weight goal, when I feel good, and I feel I'm at a point where I feel physically fit then I will be happy.
For the last month, I have been working my way up to everything. I started with walking during my breaks. Just a simple walk, about five minutes at a time. After a week, and making it a habit, I extended the walk per breaks to about 8 minutes. I now walk a ten minute walk (to fit into my 15 minute breaks) and approximately 1,150 steps per walk at a brisk pace. Slowly, I have been getting myself into the habit of marking down what I eat and replacing my coffee with water.
In the last month and a half, I have managed to loose about 6-7 lbs. (Surprisingly, I have not loost this weight from my chest or behind.)This makes me very happy. But, I'm recognizing a need to have someone or people hold me accountable, and be motivation just the same. So, here I am. I'm really looking forward to getting down to my current goal of 145, or feeling awesome in a bikini (especially, since I now have the curves to look like a chick in a bikini...)View Thread
I keep starting and stopping with my diet. I don't really have anyone that lives that close to me to work with me on this, save my husband. He is skinny as a rail so he really doesn't understand what I am going through.
He says he is supportive, but he is more critical than supportive. I am currently on the Jenny Craig system (1200 calories a week), but the menu is such small portions I end up eating extra meals or something I am not supposed to eat, also the meals are expensive. I think I may take a break from that and opt for a diet on my own again. Last year at this time I was down to about 174! I just get so depressed that i defeats me before I get very far. Anyone out there have any advice?View Thread
Steel cut oatmeal, sweetened with honey, topped with natural almond butter and a few dark chocolate chips
coffee w/ sugar and cream
brocolli cheddar soup and a cobb salad with chicken

1/2 of a whole wheat pita, and carrots and broccolli dipped in spicy hummus, a boiled egg and some ranier cherries
Since it is Friday evening, I may treat myself to a cocktail, glass of wine or perhaps a small dessert.View Thread
Just wanted to touch base after my Costa Rica trip.
I am going to post the link to the spa/resort we stayed at so that you can get an idea of the theme of the trip:
http://www.panaceacr.com/
Costa Rica in general was paradise. It is gorgeous, and my trip was the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. I zip lined, surfed for the first time, and hiked up the side of a mountain. But there was plenty of time to lie on a raft in the infinity pool and to lie in a deck chair in the shade and read a book.
But what I wanted to report here, is that although I just got back on Tuesday evening, I feel as though my time at this resort, absorbing their lifestyle philosophies has changed my life, forever, for the good.
Part of our package was daily Yoga. I have done yoga in the past, but this was life altering, meditative, restorative yoga. In 5 short days it not only made me feel physically flexible and strong. It gave me an emotional and mental balance that i have never experienced before.
The trip included food, and the the chef was outstanding. Everything was vegetarian based and of course local, farm fresh ingredients were used. They were fairly simple meals, but so delicious that I was inspired to consider a vegetarian lifestyle. Ultimately, after much thought I decided that I still want some animal protein and fish in my diet, so I am going to take an "all things in moderation" approach.
After eating so clean and healthy for all of the days of my trip, I did not want to come home and "blow it", so my first errand upon my return was to go to the market and make sure that I have the ingredients to make sure that my diet is rich in fruits, veggies primarily, and dairy, lean protein and grains in moderation.
I feel fantastic. My skin and hair are healthier, and I am practicing mindful eating and focusing on food to nourish my body. It feels amazing.
Today's DFJ:
Steel cut oats sweetened with some honey and topped with fresh, organic almond butter
coffee with cream and sugar
whole wheat tortilla filled with black beans, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, onions, herbs, avocado, and some fresh pico de gallo and pineapple and berries topped with greek yogurt and granola *
*almost all of the veggies in my wrap were grown in my own garden so are fresh and organic, as we use no pesticides.
coffee with cream and sugar
grilled chicken breast over a green salad and corn on the cob
Pi, you might notice that I no longer use Equal in my coffee. I have decided to eliminate all articificial ingredients in food and drink. I am going to choose to use more natural products.
Finally, I have not lost any weight, as a matter of fact I finally quit smoking for good a month ago and gained about 3 pounds, weighing in at 143.4 today, but I don't care. I am madly in love with my body. I don't care if it is a bit flabby or has cellulite or my chest is too small or my thighs are too big. At this particular moment in time, I love my body because of all it has done for me, and to prove that affection, I am going to commit to feed my body nourishing food, and move a little bit everyday.
I hope to find a yoga studio that reflects that philosphy of the yoga instructor in Costa Rica. I want the meditative, reflective piece along with the moving my body piece.
I hope you are all well. Pi, I miss you. I am sorry I have been MIA. Life was hectic trying to get ready for the trip. But I am back now, and plan to be better about keeping in touch here.View Thread
Any advise?

This is my first post as well as my first participation in an online dieting group. I've battled with my weight since I was ten, though. Back then my mother and I would go on liquid diets consisting of three "smoothies" a day, each consisting of a cup of powdered milk, a diet drink, and some ice cubes. We'd lose ten or twenty pounds, then put them right back on again!
Through my teens, twenties and thirties, I tried everything from Atkins to Weight Watchers (and that probably over ten times), but my weight at lowest was 145 (for maybe a day) and at highest was somewhere over 170. I never reached a healthy BMI until my late forties. I'm 48 years old, am about 5'4, and weigh around 136. I've managed this by eating a low-fat vegan diet for the last seven years and exercising vigorously almost every day. I'm training for my sixth (slow) marathon now!
Still, though, I am fairly chunky and would love to weigh around 120. I have never been even close to that, and this seems to be my best shot at it. I'd like to do it without injuring myself, developing an eating disorder, or losing my strength. So I signed up for the WebMD online food tracker and today marked the end of my fourth week on the "lose 2 pounds a week" plan. I've eaten on average just under 1400 calories a day (I have been so careful to measure and report everything!) and have burnt through fairly intense exercise an average of about 1500 calories a day, mostly in the form of running, the elliptical, or the stationary bike. I'm already fairly muscular, so I hate to do weight training. I did it before for about a year and it didn't seem to help one way or another. It seemed like at best it just added more muscle on top of the fat. I do do some yoga and pilates sometimes, though.
I know better than to give up after just four weeks, but I have only lost about a pound and a half. I'm sure some of it is hormonal, and I notice my clothes fitting more loosely, but this is making me crazy! I'm starving all the time and sometimes wake up in the middle of the night thinking of food! I'm kind of afraid to drop the calories lower than 1400 with my next marathon just a month away, but I wonder whether my lifetime of dieting has reset my metabolism so that I need very few calories to maintain my body weight. I do take synthroid, but it brings my thyroid hormones all within the normal range.
My self of ten years ago would think I was nuts to be complaining about not losing weight at 136. I'm trying *so* hard though, and really want to know how it feels to be slim. I guess it's all relative.
Anyway, I thought I'd break my (adult) tradition of doing this on my own and share my story.
Good luck to everyone out there fighting the same battle!View Thread
Had six-by-pass surgery in 2007, broke every bone in my left foot when I was 16, dislocated my right shoulder when I was in the 8th grade. I'm diabetic with high cholestrol and high blood pressure. I'm on medication as well.
I really want to add jogging back into my workout schedule but don't know how long my heel will be in pain. It's been about four months and I don't if it will ever be pain free.View Thread

It is my first time on one of these forums. I've been reading webmd for a long time now and think you guys can help me!
I've been keeping a healthy diet and exercise plan for a long time now ( 3 years+). I lost around 25 pounds in a year at some point thru running and dieting. My diet was based on a 1200 calorie plan filled with healthy foods. It was all good, until i reached my so called "set point" weight. Ever since highschool my body seemed to settle at this weight, which is around 15 pounds higher than my current weight now. So, I've been spicing up my exercise plan, doing strength training and increasing intensity on my running. I know that I can reach my goal , i am pretty motivated to say the least.
I know that in order to lose more I need to either increase my exercise or decrease the amount of food i am eating. But the problem is , i have been on this diet for such a long time, my body is used to the 1200 cals and doesn't seem to go further down in weight. Now, if I decrease my food intake that brings me below 1200 which is not advisable right? But it is also very difficult for me to push even more with my exercise.
Another issue is that it takes me way more time to lose any bit of extra weight that I put on. Say, one weekend i go travelling and i eat slightly more than my body is used to. It takes way more time to get that extra weight off than the calories the extra food really represented ( related to the amount of time i would need to exercise it off).
So ..my question is ? Do I have to increase my exercise even more, be even more strict? Should I go lower than the 1200 calorie plan?
any idea might help ! thanks a lot !!View Thread

Oh, and if anybody has any tips or suggestions i'm free to listen
And is there anyone who has overcome any eating disorders? If yes, please answer, it would mean a lot for me.View Thread

I feel a new sense of purpose about food and about weight management...FIYE, No, I did not take off the 30 or so lbs we talked about a few months ago hahaha but our competition has helped me to keep my focus. I'm right now planning on a summer goal of losing another 15 lbs, which from my weight right now would put me at 123. Though, being realistic, it took me four months to lose only about 8 lbs. So we shall see. But I really feel like I have a good plan set up for the next while, and instead of being unmotivated by my progress and getting complacent, I'm going to let my positive progress propel me further. Hopefully.

I'll be updating this a lot. I tend to do better when I have accountability.

Breakfast Mango baby food and half a leftover chicken breast
Snack A serving of some trail mix: nuts, raisins and chocolate, I think I'll probably have another thing of baby food, too.
Lunch The rest of my leftover chicken breast. It was moscato peach grilled chicken from Olive Garden OMG so delicious. It came with a dangerous pasta with bacon and cheddar sauce with tomato and spinach. I'm back to splitting my dinners, though, so I'm not worried about the horrendousness of the sauce

Dinner Brown rice, peas, carrots and beans all tossed together with garlic and lemon juice. Then some sort of meat, maybe cube steak? I haven't given a lot of thought to dinner.
What does any/everyone think about doing a DIY "cleanse" for a few days? I'm debating doing a jump start diet of egg whites, nuts, and unlimited fruits and veggies for like three days. Just to get over my recent bad eating habits. Is this a crappy idea? I'm not doing it for weight loss per se, only to get my palate back to craving the healthy stuff...
Good luck to everyone, and I appreciate in advance any encouragement or tips I get!

I have read so many good things about the watermelon diet, that i've decided to give it a try.
I will be on this diet for 5 weeks starting 05/14/12, because i need to loose some weight before my DR vacation!
I'm starting at 223 lb and i will post my progress every Monday morning.
I will start my day with 2 slices of ww toast drizzled with olive oil (instead of butter or any other spread), a cofee with few drops of milk and 1 sugar, and of course, a multivitamin. The rest of the day will be watermelon every time i'm feeling hungry.
Wish me luck, and i'll post new updates on the 21st!View Thread

Anyways, I'm a 26 year old female with a 5 year old daughter and 6 month old son. I'm 5'5 and I weight 150 lbs. I know I'm not obese, but I'm not happy with how I look.
When I was 19-20, I weighed 115 and I was healthy and trim. Not too skinny, but toned and overall I had a great body. I know I'm not that young anymore and I had no children, but I'd definitely like to be at 120. That's my goal.
I've been watching what I eat and I take in about 1200-1500 calories a day AS WELL AS working out on my elliptical machine 5-6 days a week for 20-30 minutes. (Burning 200-300 calories each session. I'm new still. My body's beginning to get used to the burn.)
My question for everyone is how long should I see results. I'm definitely going to stick to my routine here! Also, if I do keep up the good work, how long would it take me to reach my goal of 120 lbs? Does anyone have any other suggestions besides the cardio I'm doing as well as the calorie intake?
Thank you!!

I drink water all day everyday. I know I am bloated and constipated. That could be jeopardizing the scale. I know I need to eat more fiber. I know I can lose the weight. Since my daughter was born I lost 100 lbs, well 80 something since I gained 12lbs since then.View Thread
So for 8 weeks now, I am running/walking 12 miles a week, 1400-1800 calories a day. I have gained a pound every week the last 6 weeks. I also have a physically demanding job that I walk a lot at and on my feet that I don't count into the 12 miles but I wore a pedometer for a while and averaged 2-6 miles a day there. I am at a loss of to why I am gaining. I am also experiencing bloating and constipation so I am making a dr.s appt soon. I do have Ovarian cancer in my family so I am a little worried.
Any thoughts?View Thread
