I know that some meds could contribute to weight gain and I have been taking assorted meds for at least 3 years now. One I have to take for life; my synthroid, it was partially removed when I was a child. But dont rule that my thyroid is the culprit. I do take Topamax (topirimate 100 mg), Ativan (Lorapezepam 1 mg). I had my 5 month checkup with the doc yesterday. I was very frustrated with my weight gain, or not able to lose lets say. I am doing everything right. I go the gym and and go on the elliptical machine for 30 minutes straight with the arm bar and leg at same time. Do a steady pace with intensity level at 3. At home I use my stability ball for sit-ups. I told all this to my doctor because i was highly frustrated that I cant lose. I am watching the diet and I eat just chicken, cooked any way except fried. I eat lot of fruit and veggies. I do alot smoothies in the morning with greek yogurt which i love and its good for you.
I told all of this to my doctor, you know what he says: that's the problem, fruit is loaded with sugar. If you are making smoothies every morning with fruit the calories, it's not a good idea. I was flabbergasted, never in my wild imagination that I would told that smoothies are not good. He said that fruit are loaded with sugar and is bad when you are trying to lose weight. Also we discussed about the meds, perhaps wean from them (except thyroid). But I want to keep the Ativan for the time being. Thats takes the edge off and I take it for sleep. He agrees it was ok but we going to knock off Topamax. It was both of our decisions. He usually refills the pills for 5 months and calls them to the pharmacy. He was surprised that I wanted to be of of Topamax because many of patients that take it, one of side effects is losing weight. I said...look at me doc, well it's not the case with me. Besides isn't the main reason for Topamax is for seizures.....which i dont even get them. Anyway, it was his call. What you think about the fruit and the smoothies and I am doing the wrong thing with the fruit, because he said the worse thing to have when you want to lose weight.

I finally got a great response to one of posts regarding fruit and sugar. I posted lengthy story in a few communities and didnt get any satisfaction to my post till now. A member reply to my post and my doctor was right about fruit having alot of sugar and her nutritionist concurred with and told her that "avoid ALL sugar as much as possible to try to get my metabolism going. I also thought "Well, raw fruit is really healthy...surely I should eat lots of that!" but she said I'm not to have more than 1 handful of fruit per day since I'm having such a hard time losing".
My story was thatI i went to the doctor a few weeks ago and when totally frustrated when I weighed and told him that I am going to the gym nearly evry day and eating healthy, I cook chicken alot but not fried. I told him that I was making smoothies nearly every day. He said that was my problem. The fruit in them is why I am not losing weight. For the time being I am buying lot of veggies and have either salad with romaine lettuce or spinach, green onions, tomatoe, cucumbers which is very filling. I buy the low sugar dressing or else put some lemon juice and some spices. I was also drinking orange juice every morning but I switched to low sugar juices instead. I love tea in summer and drinking green tea alot with little sweetener like stevia or splenda. I found the best green ever and it comes in a big box. Luzianne tea i found had the greatest flavor ever.
Btw, I havn't had any side effects whatsoever for about 3 weeks now since i stopping the Topamax. Thank you to the members that gave me great support.
Thanks for your thoughtful response. I am been watching practically all labels to see sugar gms that are on the food I buy at the store. I havn't bought any fruit and stopped my morning orange juice which I saw the sugar count in those frozen cans. Because I love some kind of juice in the morning, in the juice aisle there are juices that are low in sugar. I bought two bottles and sugar was like under 10 gms.
What is frap that you mentioned..?? Is that iced coffee or something like it. I have a ice tea maker that I use all the time for my green tea that I buy. I buy sometoimes flavored green tea bags and there are some flavors I like. How do you make your frap. Thanks again for the response.
It's been two weeks since we stopped topamax and I feel fine. No side effects since. I posted a lengthy post about my trip to doctor and frustrated with not being losing weight. I cut off all fruit for the time being since the doc cautioned all that fruit is loaded with sugar. I stocked up withh veggies when I shopped and for about 4 days straight I had a nice salad with romaine lettuce, shredded carrots, cucumbers, grape tomatoes. I use light dressing. It really curbed appetite for dinner after eating a nice salad. I also bought spinach leaves and I will make more salads.
I usually buy chicken breasts, skinless and boneless and I cook it different ways except fried. The other day I put two breasts in a pan and put a little olive oil, added chopped garlic and green onions. Put the chicken in and used seasonings and some teriyaki sauce which added more flavor to the chicken. Since I ate a big salad I didnt have any thing with chicken and that was fine. I drink ice tea during summer and bought green tea bags. I have a ice tea maker and when it brews and goes to the pitcher, it makes about 3 quarts. I just my own sweetener in my sipper and some lemon. Hopefully that this new regimen I am doing which shed some weight. I also go to the gymn about 4 times a week and do the elliptical for 30 minutes and use my exercise ball at home. Wish me luck with my new schedule and keeping on tract.
Sorry for the confusion, I tend to do that when I didnt explain the whole sitution. When i said" seizures that I can recall". I dont know what a seizure feels like. I am getting SSDI for speech aphasia that I acquired after a brain trauma and went in the hospital. The docs I had in the hospital gave me Lamictal and the ativan. I left in the hospital with those meds. I didnt like Lamictal for some reasons for I dont remember.. After leaving hospital I looked for a regular doctor for my checkups and meds. I asked him that i didnt like the Lamictal and asked for another med. He prescribed Topamax and also he said of all seizure meds, topamax has a side effect of losing weight. Well, that didnt happen to me.
I have been on topamax for over a year and I felt I gained weight instead of losing. This past checkup we discussed dropping the Topamax. He didnt refill it for me anyway. When you said keep note of anything "unusual". Can you mean what you mean. What should I watch out for.
I got my refills for my meds. We are taking off the Topamax as we discussed in the docs office. I don't have seizures and I remember getting seizures or headaches. I still take the synthroid and Ativan (lorezepam) for anxiety but I use it at night for a better sleep. Two days off of Topamax and I feel fine, more refreshed in morning, when I used to be tired waking up. Thats the cats doing, they try to get me up (6 am) even if they got their food. What can I can, they'rer spoiled so I am getting up around 7 am.
I dont work and I get SSDI every month. I went shopping over weekend and bought lots of fresh veggies, peppers (red, yellow, green), broccolli, carrots, cauliflower, green onions. It took awhile to cut all of them to put them in baggies. That way I will have ready snacks that are healthy. I also buy bought my usual bread that I love whole grain 100% wheat. Some wheat tortillas that i will make veggie rollups or wraps. Noo fruit whatsoever...for my own benefit. But i think it will be ok without topamax because I never got a seizure that i recall.
I joined a stroke support group and I am so glad that I did. I look forward for every single time I get to meet with the members of such a wonderful group. At my first encounter, I met with several people in the group. I felt at home the minute I arrived till I left. Today we had a car wash at a local car dealership. What a blast it was..!!. There was girl scouts that did the washing of the cars, people from our group LSSN passing out leaflets. There was a radio station there promoting Lincolnland Stroke Support Network. Soo....if you know anyone that suffered a stroke and would like to join a wonderful group, I highly recommend this support group. I can't wait for upcoming events. There will a picnic on July 3rd and I have so many ideas on what to bring as far as food.
Thanks so much for the reply Candy. I miss posting, i been browsing for groups. Went bowling last night with the group, it was a blast. I tell you, i love to laugh and the guy that picks me up is a hoot. He says the funniest things and he cracks up everyone. I wish more people could join the group is a wonderful experience. As far as food, they are putting a sign-up sheet so that people can list what they are bringing to the picnic. I have not decided. I have many ideas to bring, I am good at several kinds of salads. My favorites are: Fruit salad; Broccoli; Pasta Salad, Taco Salad. Whatever is easier i will make.. I am still figure out to make those smileys you do. One of these days.
I am totally confused about the med change and its a weekend and I can't call the doctor's office. I hate that.....even I call the office, the last time...I called 3 days in a row to talk to the doctor or even the nurse in the middle of the month They put me to the nurse's voicemail. I told her to call me about the results from a test that i took. I waited and waited. She never called me back. Now, I would think that this new medication and my confusion should warrant a call from the nurse.
The last time i was on the doctors office. I requested him to change my med. I am on Lamictal since June and get rashes, and I think i gained weight with it. He agreed with me and he prescribed topamax. He said to me that he is weening me off lamictal and start with the topamax the same time. I got the meds at the store today. I have the same dose of lamictal that i had before. Plus, the topamax. Does that sound right.....??? If I am supposed to be ween off Lamictal, why did the store gave the same pills I had before. I am asking here because I really know if someone can answer. This is a big problem for me. Even if i call the office on Monday, there is a real possibility that I would not talk to the nurse for days or the doctor. I left several messages the middle of the month about another question, no reply. I don't have a car either to hop in and go to the office to talk to him. View Thread
