Doctor has prescribed medicines and said "it may take 6-12 weeks to become effective" . At end of first week and has not worked.
The mother is quite perplexed as child is so angry, belligerent, uncooperative, sad, etc.. for most of every day.
Does anyone have some tips for coping with this until hopefully the medicine begin to work?
Perhaps a "support group?
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks rich PView Thread

I'm Bipolar too and having trouble fixing my meds so this is a nightmare I understand all to well. Right now it's obvious to me Bipolar and ADHD are the biggest problems. His Tourette's seems to have gone into hiding.
Then there is his sister....
I'm just sitting here everyday now wondering how on earth something like this could happen. How could I have done this to these beautiful children? What am I supposed to do now? I can't fix myself right now much less be what they need me to be. And then your "team" and "support" fight you on everything......
What else have you tries for your child besides Intuive? (Which BTW they first prescribed for his Tourette's and now for ADHD?!?!?)View Thread
I highly encourage those close enough to attend to do so, it is a very informative event.
Here is the link, (may need to copy/paste). It is a free event, but you must pre-register to attend.

I'm a mom of a nine yr old son who was diagnosed with ADHD this past year and we finally put him on meds. He's had anger issues and defiance but after having him on this med Intuniv it really exacerbated. I asked his ped if it could be from the medication and he refused to believe that, and referred my son for counselling...basically not wanting to deal with it anymore.
So last night was the last straw. We just got two new puppies for our him and his 4yr old sister...crazy I know. I don't know what we were thinking, maybe trying to do anything to maybe make him happy. He is very resentful of his younger sister and recently started to destroy anything that was hers...cutting up her barbies toys or anything that i bought for her. I have reassured him, spent one on one with him and nothing seems to work..he still thinks we love her more and don't love him. It's so frustrating.
Yesterday he came home from summer camp and his friend called him out with his dog and i said he had to eat first. He got really mad, and I had to restrain him, then it just escalated because he doesn't listen and won't go to his room. Me and my husband fought with him for over an hour...tried calming him, tried holding his door shut until he calmed down because he became extremely violent, scratches, hits kicks and throws things. Then my husband had him hit a pillow and he hit it and my husband ended up pushing him down by accident and he hit his face on the floor....then i had to calm him down for over an hour because he complained his ribs hurt and his face.
It's getting to the point where I finally am realizing he has something else going on. I realize too that the ADHD meds may have made his bipolar worse if he has it.
when he woke up this morning he was argumentative and wanted to tell me about all the stuff i did to him and how he's hurting. I apologized, told him I love him no matter what and that we are going to get him the help he needs.
I'm so upset right now...I feel like a failure as a mom and fear for him if he does have this disease because i lived with a mom my whole life who was undiagnosed and self medicated with alcohol. I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety but bp ruled out. I know that it runs in the family though.
I will be contacting a ped psychiatrist today.View Thread
You may have noticed some changes that happened to your Exchange after last weekeend. We rolled out a few new features and added back the ability for you all to add signatures to your posts.
Here are some of the new things to check out:
Finding Expert Content – On the front page of an Exchange you will now see “Includes Expert Content” if an expert has responded in a thread. So, if you’re just looking for expert feedback you can find it more easily.
Signatures – If you visit your Exchange Profile page you will now see a place to add your signature. You can add a different signature to each Exchange you join, so that it’s a more personalized experience.
TRIGGER – Moderators can now add a TRIGGER notation to a post. So, if you come across a post that you think needs a TRIGGER, send the link to our mods at ExchangeManagement@WebMD.net and someone will take a look and add TRIGGER if necessary.
Guest Experts and Sponsored Guests – Very soon we hope to be adding guest experts to some of our moderated Exchanges. These will be experts who are available for a limited time to answer questions about specific aspects of a topic. For instance, there might be a diabetes diet expert visiting the Diabetes Exchange. You may also notice “Sponsored” guests. These are experts that may be nominated by one of our site sponsors, and they will answer in much the same way as a guest expert, but it will be clear that their content is from a sponsor.
We hope that you like these new additions, and we welcome your comments and suggestions as well. Our product and engineering teams are already hard at work on even more changes and additions that have been suggested by our members, and we hope to have those ready soon.
Please feel free to write to us at ExchangeManagement@WebMD.net and let us know what you think.

Anger, rapid mood swings, irritable, argumentative, etc. to the extreme.
He has turned from my lovable little boy into teen who tells me things like he wished I would die and other horrible things. He is constantly insulting and berating me and my wife to the point where my wife just hides in the bedroom and avoids him.
We have only had 3 sessions but the psychologist was convinced he was bipolar after only 1 session.
The plan is to whether the storm for 2 more months until school ends then possibly begin some medication to control it.
I have spent many sleepless nights, worrying and crying over this. I have such a mess of emotions all the time. I love my son more than I love my own life, yet I resent the way he treats us but at the same time I know he can't help it. It twists me up inside constantly.
It also bothers me to think he needs meds the rest of his life, the whole thing is just awful.View Thread
Could you drop a note on this thread and tell me how you navigated to the Families of Depressed & Bipolar Kids Exchange ?
Is this exchange too hard to find?
I'm wondering as this exchange hasn't had anyone stop by and post in about 2 weeks.

We are thrilled to share with you some changes that have been made to WebMD Health Exchange due to some of the wonderful feedback you all have given us.
First of all, you’ll notice that we’ve changed the top of the What’s Happening Now page so that See All Discussions, Tips, and Resources are right at your fingertips. These links will take you to our index pages, which read much more like our old message boards. We’ve also made our posting button at the top larger, and it drops down so you can choose which type of content you want to post.
You’ll also notice that we’ve added some more spacing to the posts themselves, making them less bunched up and easier to read.
AND, we’ve increased the posts per page from 15 to 30.
Along with that, you’ll see that now when you respond to another member’s post, it will say Member_1 replied to Member_2’s response. If you click on the word “response” you’ll be taken back to the original post you responded to so that you can continue reading the thread from there.
When we launched, the option to add a member story on the WebMD Moderated Exchanges was left off. That has been added back in, and you can begin crafting your stories now!
You should also begin to notice that it isn’t taking quite as long for your messages to show up. The problem has not gone away completely. Our tech folks are still working on a final fix. However, you should only have to wait 60 seconds or less to see your post appear on the What’s Happening Now feed. If you’re posting from the See All Discussions or any other index page, your post should show up immediately.
We also fixed a defect that was frustrating many of our members. After you joined an Exchange, created your member story, and then voted on a poll you would often be unjoined from the Exchange and your member story would disappear. This issue has been resolved, and you should now remain joined to the Exchange after voting on a poll.
We hope you enjoy these changes. You’ve given us some great feedback. We’re listening, and these are just the first of the fixes and additions to come. Our tech team is already working on several more changes based on your suggestions and comments.
Please keep writing to let us know what you like, what you don’t, and share your suggestions for the future.
Yours in Health,
The WebMD Health Exchange StaffView Thread
I'll start by saying that I know everyone would like the old boards back, but they are no longer available. And honestly, they were not working well anymore, which was why we needed to implement something new.
We want to make the reading and interacting on the new forums less confusing, and in order to do that we need you to tell us exactly what you find the hardest to do. Give us as many concrete details as you can.
- Is it hard to read because your board/conversations move too fast?
- Is it because the What's Happening Now feed only shows what's new?
- Is it because you can only see 15 posts at a time on the What's Happening Now page?
- Is the page too cluttered?
Tell us exactly what makes it hard or confusing and how you'd like it to behave.
We will pass all of your comments and suggestions along to our engineering and management teams and keep you informed about what changes are coming.
Take care,
AnnieView Thread
