Actually in modern America, because people are likely to eat foods that are "iron-fortified", ie cereals, breads, dairy products...plus, of course, natural sources of iron...meat, fish, chicken and beans...there are more people that are too high in iron rather than too low. This is especially true for men and post menopausal women.
What are some problems with having too much iron in your body?
Too much iron in your blood may be just as bad as having too little. Iron is a potent oxidizer that can generate the production of "free radicals". By now, everybody has heard the term, antioxidants (and the importance of eating them)? Well, the job of antioxidants is to neutralize the tissue destroying effects of "free radicals". It's been suggested in recent studies that overdosing on vitamins may be causing cancer, diabetes and liver damage within the population.
The best solution is to see your doctor, annually, and be sure to have your blood drawn and tested as part of the checkup. Also, make sure you disclose all drugs, vitamins and supplements (especially, diet supplements) during annual check-ups, too.
Who are most at risk for iron deficiency? Babies, young children, adolescent girls, people on restricted diets, pregnant women & women with heavy periods...according to Dr. Oz: If you need to change your tampon after less than two hours, you're considered a heavy bleeder and could mean you're low in iron.View Thread
Just because you get a lot of sleep doesn't mean you're well rested. Rest is achieved only through deep sleep. Ever been tested for sleep apnea? If you're not getting sufficient oxygen when sleeping, your body will struggle no matter how much sleep you get. It's estimated that 1 in 4 have sleep apnea with the majority of sufferers, undiagnosed.
"Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat relax. These muscles support the soft palate, the triangular piece of tissue hanging from the soft palate (uvula), the tonsils, the side walls of the throat and the tongue. When the muscles relax, your airway narrows or closes as you breathe in, and you can't get an adequate breath in. This may lower the level of oxygen in your blood. Your brain senses this inability to breathe and briefly rouses you from sleep so you can reopen your airway. This awakening is usually so brief that you don't remember it. You may make a snorting, choking or gasping sound. This pattern can repeat itself five to 30 times or more each hour, all night long. These disruptions impair your ability to reach the desired deep, restful phases of sleep, and you'll probably feel sleepy during your waking hours..."View Thread
You see the movie, "Shawshank Redemption"? You're goal is the stream outside the prison? Well, you're still digging the hole in the wall with the rock hammer. You'll get to that stream on two conditions:
1. Your "hammer" doesn't break, or 2. You give up
You gained the weight because you lacked the "tools". plus, you gave up. Now that you have both, the weight coming off is a mathematical inevitability.View Thread
Exercise aids and enhances clearing of the bowels. I'm (58,M) as regular as a clock because I maintain steady movement and exercise, everyday. The whole purpose of taking the prep medicine is to flush the plumbing so I'd think exercise helps, not hurts. Nevertheless, check the doctor's written pre-test instructions for all requirements and restrictions.View Thread

I use to be big. I use to be an addict. I use to be a f#&*up. But, I'm not, anymore. Today, when I meet someone for the first time, do you think I discuss my medical history and past addictions with them? Of course not! It's none of their business and it's completely irrelevant, anyhow. imo, before you can address your weight, you have to free your mind. You have rid yourself of all the baggage you lug around with you. You have to free yourself of all the reasons why you can't be happy. You have to forget your past and start with a clean slate. Lastly, you've got to get mad. You've got the grab that person, inside, by the collar and kick their...
Your mom can't help you but you have no idea how helpless and tormented she feels. You're her baby. You will always be. She knows how happy you were when you were little. She took you everywhere with her in the backseat of her car. You may not remember all this but, trust me, parents remember, everything. Please, carefully consider your next steps as you prepare for this next part of your life. Life is a choice, no excuses. You're either in control...or explaining to others why you're not. And, like I said, above. Nobody wants to hear about it, anyway. So, get mad, now!View Thread
The fittest, healthiest people would not be healthy very long if they performed daily activities they didn't enjoy. What's the point in doing anything you are not, mentally, on board with. And, of course, how can you continue to perform movements that cause excruciating pain? Discomfort, yes; pain, forget it. As long as it involves moving your body, do whatever you "enjoy". Scraping paint, cleaning house, gardening, having sex...it's all goooooooood.
I watch infomercials and just shake my head. What kind of nincompoop could think they can perform such exercise for more than 90 days? What good is any exercise if you don't (or can't) do it, everyday? Eventually, I plan to move to a country that has snow 6-7 mn of the year. That way I can cross country ski...in the dark! That would be a blast, not just for me, but for my dogs, too. There is no downside to exercise; it's all "gravy". So, go get some!View Thread
spinning, walking and swimming. If you're overweight, you have to get your weight down, of course. Plenty of rest and water, only. Clean diet is really key, too. No pain killers or anti inflammatories, if you can; they give you temporary relief but slow new tissue growth and inflame your liver and kidneys.
You search to repair and heal. You're instincts are spot-on. Building muscle is the correct path. Good luck.View Thread
