I turned 50 this year. I just has my yearly back in March everything (except my weight 5'7 176) checked out alright. I've been slowly losing a few pounds trying to eat healthier and less. Lost 10 pounds so far. Still I wonder about the bleeding, why does it happen? It's red, not dark, not real light but blood red and it's not real heavy but enough to stain a pad. [br>[br>Is this normal for a person my age on the pill? I know things have been discussed concerning heavy bouts of bleeding in the past but this is sort of ongoing. .. Just want to add this is the second day this is happening. It's not all day bleeding, it is light but it is happening. Could it be from stress? I have had a few things happening in my life recently, a loss and an impending loss of a friend who is currently on hospice and at home. Could these things bring this on or is it something I should have checked out again? Again, this happens most months now that I am on BCP's but nothing near the blood loss that caused my dr. to prescribe the stronger dose, it does seem to have helped. I would say this usually happens 2 - 3 times during the course of a pill pack most months. Do you think this warrants a call or visit with my dr. again? Thanks!

I have had bleeding issues in the past, heavy bleeding which caused the dr. to suggest the stronger dose BCP. It has worked pretty well but most months I have some bleeding.

I am female, 50, on BCP's for apprx. 34 yrs. My gen. prac. mentioned she can not know if I am in menopause unless I stop the pill for 1 mo. and they can test me. New to me was the fact that she said I would always have a 'period' while on the pill regardless. Does that mean even if I were in menopause (which I take to mean no more periods) what she is saying it to mean? Am I still bleeding because I am taking the pill?
Perhaps at my age I should know these things but I do not. In the past couple of years I had very heavy bleeding problems. My BCP had to be adjusted to a higher dose which did help. I was also anemic and took iron pills at that time. I no longer take them but wonder if it would be harmful to continue an iron supplement, I feel very tired much of the time, I sleep perfectly fine but remain tired and even go so far as to nap most afternoons for up to a couple of hours going to bed around 12 a.m. and sleeping through the night. I am also overweight about 25 pounds and have terrible eating habits which because I don't like the result (weight gain) I am seriously considering making the necessary changes to my diet to lose. But in the meantime, about the iron, can you suggest a safe amount or do I need to ask my dr.?
Sorry for all the questions but you've been such a great help in the past that I felt good about asking once again.

Is it possible that I can spread this to my partner? If so, what should we do to avoid the possibility?

When you shared in your clinical experience that 'the balance of the vaginal ecology usually returns in time', can I take that to mean symptoms often go away on their own? I guess my next question is, how long can one expect the symptoms to last? I'm guessing it varies with each individual, is that correct? Do you know of a time frame one might experience this at the longest?
I was also wondering if I used the metrogel if I could expect more of the same thing again a short time down the road? I really would hope that would not be the case but the question does come up for me.
Perhaps I need to inquire about the baking soda douches or using baking soda in the tub for symptom relief instead. I know it's up to me to decide whether or not I use the metrogel yet if it just comes back it seems to defeat the purpose.
You mentioned not having personally used the vaginal metronidazole for treating this condition (I think that is how you meant it), can you tell me if you think the problem can/does resolve itself without? I guess I'm trying to think of a way to talk myself out of it if it doesn't guarantee to rid of the problem or if you yourself feel it is not advisable for this particular problem.
I'm not sure what you can answer by way of my questions but anything additional you are able to shed light on would be most appreciated as your help has been in the past.
Thank you,

Thank you so much for your in depth information. I have found it very helpful in better understanding my diagnosis.
How might I find out more about the backing soda douche (is this found OTC)? Do you think it is advisable to go ahead with the Metrogel? It wasn't a must as she did mention trying the Acidophilus first but it hasn't taken care of the problem on its own.
Is it advisable to continue on the Acidophilus? If so, indefinitely or how long might be advisable for someone like myself? My gyn. mentioned it would not hurt to take the Acidophilus indefinitely but I'm not a pill taker and the only pill I ever really take is my BCP daily or an ibuprophen if necessary at certain times of the month when I have migranes.
Would like to hear your thoughts on these whe you have time.
Thank you very much!View Thread
