I ended bacturm for a UTI on Thursday. Went to see a new primary today due to exp left flank pain still. They took a urine sample (only a little bit came out), while I am on my period (no tampon), so there was a bit of blood in the small sample. He said there was signs of WBC in it, and I asked if my period could offset that result, he said typically no. He wanted to give me a antibiotic shot right away, and I was hesitatnt to go that route. I am not exp any other symptoms and asked if it could be a stone. I asked if the stone could cause these results, he said typically, no. He did send the small sample out for culture as he said it could get a false/postivie. Can a culture be done while blood from my period is present? I don't want to jump on meds again if for some reason it could be off. I have never heard of this shot, is this effective and tolerated well by many?View Thread

Flank pain with UTI

Hello,
I posted recently regarding my UTI that you helped me with, Jane. Thank you. I am on day 6 of Bactrum, (discontinued the Cipro after speaking with my dr regarding some joint sensativity), anyway, my primary did look at my urinalysis, and based on the ecoli, prescribed this med for 2x a day, for 7 days. Prior to being positive for the UTI, I only had symptoms of a strong odor urine, and left flank pain. Flank discomfort has been about 3 weeks now (I thought it was a pulled muscle). I have one more pill for today, and my two doses tomorrow, is it common for the flank pain to still be present, this long intot he antibiotics, and should I be concerned if it does not resolve by a certain timeframe?
I did call my primary today, as I am going out of town on a trip tomorrow, until Monday. The Dr said it is hard to say what is going on, and suggested I be seen. I unfortunitly could not get in today before I leave in the am. I am scared with stopping the meds tomorrow, and something being wrong/and happening. The flank discomfort I feel is only on my left side, and it is only when I bend over, when that part of my back is being stretched out. It has not grown in pain over this time, it's more a dull ache really. Any information would be great for possible reassurance as I head out of town. Thank you!!View Thread

Thank you, Jane
I started the Cipro two days ago, but after one pill was not feeling right, so the Dr asked me to stop for 24 hrs, and yesterday called in Bactrim. I had to wait to this am to get on a normal schedule of every 12 hrs for 7 days. I have been experiencing left flank pain, since last week, what brought me to the immediate care last Sat. The urinanylsis said it was a UTI and the bacteria was e-coli, as the same last Aug, and last June. Anyway, I took my first dose at 8 am, and am due soon. I feel like the flank pain is more bothersome today. It has/is only on my left side. Is this common with a UTI? How would I know if it is now a kidney infection instead? Would I feel that pain on both sides of my back? How many doses will I need before I start to feel relief, the only discomfort I have is my back, my urine no longer has a strong odor (as it did before). Thank you for all your help!View Thread

I read online that D- Mannose can be taken safely to treat and prevent a UTI. Is this a safe alternative/ Based on my over 100,000 bacteria count and flank pain, is it safe to possibly try this over Cipro. I do want to note that I suffer from a heart arrythmia, so I want to make sure that this route will not cause any life threatning issues with my heart condition either...thank you!View Thread

Hello:)
I was treated for group B strep when I was pregnant in 9/2011 and put on Kelflex. I was then treated with one round of antibiotics in labor.
I developed a UTI 3 months post delivery, and that was detected due to my urine smelling strong. I was nervous to take the meds due to nursing, so the OB said I can do 4 days (as that should be enough)...I didn't complete the full dose. This strain of UTI was E-Coli. Aug I had a f/up with my primary and he did a urinalysis and that came back positive for E-Coli, so he treated me with bactrum for I believe 7 days.
I was good since Aug 2011, and over the last week, my urine had the strong odor, and lower left flank pain- so a new urinanalysis shows positive for E-Coli yet again, and with a count of over 100,000. (note: I have started working out (spinning) and not sure if sitting on a bike while on my period- using pads could cause this?)
My question is...1) could this be the same bacteria not being killed off? I did have to take a antibiotic 3 weeks ago for a tooth infection, and this course of meds will now make my 6th dose of antibiotics since 9/10.
2) I read something online that states a study was done and women that consumed more than 500 doses of antibiotics in a 17 yr period were 100% more likely to develop breast cancer. I am terrified and want to obv not cause more harm than good to myself by not treating it, but I am worried for 1) the development of BC, 2) having a resistant strain of bacteria and 3) becoming resistant to the antibiotics from such freq use.
I do have a f/up scheduled with my primary as I am hoping for a sono of my kidneys and to see a urologist as this devolped after my 2nd vaginal delivery.
I am going to be starting Cipro 2x (500MG) daily, for 7 days.
Can you please shed some light on this for me
Thank you for all your help!!View Thread

I would seek out a surgeon. I had a breast reduction in 2001. I was a DDD, brought down to a small D. They took off 6 lbs and I am glad I did it!! I went on about 5 consultations, and took my time, until I felt comfortable with the Dr I used. He took photo's and did a breast exam (to tell my tissue was dense)...and that was all I needed to do. Things may have changed, but they can probably direct you in the right direction, while getting some info for yourself.
Good luck! PS- not painful recovery at all! I was out and about by day 2.View Thread

I believe I may have yet another UTI. The only reason why I feel this way is my urine is starting to get a foul odor. This happened when I was a month post baby, and I didn't realize that is what it was. I have experienced about 4 UTI's in the last year, and all have taken antibiotics to clear them. I have also needed meds for a tooth infection recently, so going on about 5x (once when preggo) in the last year or so that I took antibiotics. I don't want to build an immunity to the meds, and risk stomach issues, so I am wondering if there are any other ways to clear this? How will I know if it has not resolved? I bought cranberry pills, so I will start taking them. I also usually have an orange a day. I try to drink a lot of water, but I can up that as well to help flush it out. Any other tips?View Thread
