About 1 month ago I went to my Dr. and my blood pressure was 167/107. He gave me a prescription for meds.Yikes! Back on the healthy eating plan and yesterday my BP was 118/64. He asked if I wanted to consider going off the meds. He was quite surprised when I told him I never took them. What did you do? What did you eat? I also lost 17 lbs. It seems more than obvious which diet is the healthiest.View Thread
I just had some lessons on how to brush my teeth. The lessons were a bargain, just $1300.00.
OK, I had a gum graft, to cover some really receeding gums, over the two canine teeth, on the upper jaw. After the surgery, you have to brush your teeth, and you worry about touching the graft, and knocking it off. Then you realize that the toothbrush bristles can simply rest against the teeth, and the handle move in little circular motions, and it brushes the teeth just fine. If I had realized that, maybe I could have saved $1300 bucks. So about after 8 weeks, the gums are just fine. The periodontist said I was a good healer. I think that means my dog obeys me well.
Some more important tips
When I first came to the periodontist, he examined my x-rays. He said I had some bone loss (due to periodontal disease: bacteria attacking the bone, in pockets between the gum and the teeth). However, he said I had no active periodontal disease.
I have been brushing and flossing for 30 years. I have been using the little brushes that go between the teeth, for about 2 years. Apparently, brushing and flossing are not adequate to prevent periodontal disease. Adding the little brushes is necessary to prevent and reverse periodontal disease. (Proxabrush is one brand name.) My wife and her family are all prone to periodontal disease. She had to have a bone graft about a year ago. Now she religiously uses the Proxabrushes (or other brand). Her periodontist raves about how well she is doing. She is his ONLY patient who is reversing their pockets.
Before sharing my secrets, let me share some background info. If you buy ACT fluoride rinse, it says to rinse, spit, do not rinse, and do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes. This allows the saliva and fluoride to strengthen the tooth enamel. If you get prescription fluoride toothpaste, it says to brush, spit, do not rinse, and do not eat or drink for 30 minutes. By the way, prescription fluoride toothpaste has only 4 times as much fluoride as regular toothpaste. Only 4 times.
So, when you brush your teeth, spit thoroughly, but do not rinse. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes.
When you floss, have toothpaste in the mouth.
When you use the Proxabrush (or other brand), stick toothpaste on the brush first.
A waterpick is good to use, also. However, I remember the first time I used a Proxabrush. I had brushed, flossed, and waterpicked. The first time I stuck the proxabrush in the gap above my worst pocket, there was a bad taste in my mouth. The proxabrush removed something that the toothbrush, floss and waterpick missed.

I am happy to say my opthamologist says I'm very lucky, after examining my eyes. I replied that I am lucky, but I'm working real hard to make that luck. He laughed.
My dad died of diabetes, so I don't take my luck for granted.

I did not realize how many benefits there were to strawberries and pomegranate.
Of course, the best course is to eat a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. But I do include pomegranates and strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, as well as apples, oranges and bananas, plus occasional others.

Quite impressive.
Dr. Fuhrman was on Dr. Oz Monday June 4. One thing that was new, was that Dr. Fuhrman did not recommend exercise during the first week, while working to start the diet. He said to wait until you feel like exercising. That sounds reasonable to me, because the body has to go through some big changes, when starting the diet. Exercise is just an additional stress, and hard exercise gives me a ravenous diet, which would be difficult to handle, before being comfortable with the new lifestyle.
For anyone who didn't get to watch it, here are the links to all the parts. The recipes are below the videos.

Pastor Rick Warren realized he had to lose 90 pounds. He is leader of 10 large churches in California, with a total of 20,000 members. He said, from the pulpit, that he would like to lose weight, and he asked those who wished to join him, to sign up. He expected 200 or 300 people to sign up. 6,000 people signed up.
Paster Warren called Dr. Oz, and Dr. Amen (the same guy in my other post) and others, to construct a good program for weight loss. Pastor Warren has lost 55 pounds. The church collectively has lost
270,000 pounds.
One thing they learned is that groups of 4, 5 or 6 were best, and lost twice the weight, on the average, than people working on their own. You can learn more at www.danielplan.org . It is gratifying that the diet recommended is a huge step toward the Fuhrman program.
If Finland can do it, we can do it.
If Saddleback church can do it, we can do it.

Some times it seems like we are swimming upstream, as we try to be informative, to spread the word about our ETL lifestyle.
Well, we can win. How do we know? Because the people in Finland used to have the highest heart disease rate in the world, higher than the USA. But the Finnish people have reduced their heart disease rate by 75 (SEVENTY FIVE) %.
They got the government behind the program. But wait, in the US, we have the USDA in the pocket of the Beef Council, the Dairy Council, and agribusiness. The government is working first for their interest, and second for our interest. Never mind.

I just caught the PBS fund raiser by Dr. Daniel Amen, for helping you get a more youthful brain. Did you catch the diet he recommended? In the PBS special, he did not mention Dr. Fuhrman, but it is our diet !!
Dr. Amen made a brain scan of himself, a few years ago, and was shocked to see that he had an old brain, older than his years!! He said he was 30 pounds overweight, and slugging down diet colas.
Now he has regained a youthful brain. This is very impressive and inspirational.
For my birthday, my wife said lets have some ice cream and cake; a big cheat. I said why don't you find another great delicious recipe that is perfect on the diet, that we love. OK, I admit it, I didn't take much convincing at all. We ate ourselves sick on ice cream and cake for my birthday. Then we saw Dr. Amen's special. Now my wife says, for her birthday, she's going to look for a recipe perfect on the diet, that we love!!
In other words, Dr.Amen's work is motivational !!

I heartily recommend Forks Over Knives, a 90 minute DVD available from NetFlix, or the forks over knives website.
The Engine 2 Diet is about the same diet, from Rip Esselstyn's point of view. It is inspirational from the aspect of a very healthy strong young man. It also has some great recipes.
These may be convincing to your friends.

Again, please get to being real healthy fast !! Thank heavens your heart attack was mild. You are a super person, and we need you.
If I may be so bold, may I offer suggestions, only, hopefully, to be helpful.
Your 100% blockages, in spite you your excellent lifestyle, show that your heredity is telling you that you have to be stricter than most, to be healthy. Thus the chapter "Moderation Kills", in Dr. Esselstyn's book.
Because of person to person variation of heredity, we cannot say "it's the clams" or "it can't be the clams", because what may be great for one person or one group, may be far to moderate for a specific individual.
In my experience, my IMT got worse, following Pritikin strictly for 2 years. Ornish ran a study with heart patients, where the Ornish diet group had 1/2 the heart problems, compared to the standard medical care group. But, the Ornish and standard medical care group, both had no change in their IMT.
When I converted to the Fuhrman program, I was able to reverse my atherosclerosis, based on IMT. I lose 10 pounds, and ate far more vegetables. On Pritikin, I ate zero fat, meat fish or poultry or dairy, or nuts or seeds. On Fuhrman, I ate plenty of nuts and seeds.
Dr. Fuhrman would suggest that you, as having diabetic tendencies, change from 4 meals daily to 2 meals, maybe 3. The metabolic condition of drawing from your reserves, instead of drawing from food as it is digesting, is very healthy. I think it gives some of the benefit of weight loss (drawing from your reserves) without weight loss.
Dr. Fuhrman also would suggest to be lean enough to pinch an inch by the navel, for a woman.
Being lean is very healthy, and essential, to one extent or another, depending on your heredity. Also, it is absolutely true that the fastest reversal of atherosclerosis is with weight loss. Losing weight provides rapid improved arterial health. Being lean also contributes to continuing the good arterial health, and continuing the improvement.
(Many doctors mistakenly advise to keep weight up. This is wrong advice, based on studies showing that the leanest group of heart patients often do poorly, as well as the overweight patients. When a person nears end of life, their cholesterol will lower, and weight reduce. So, if cholesterol drops or weight drops, due to nothing that the patient is doing, that might be a bad sign. If cholesterol or weight drops due to lifestyle efforts, that's very healthy.)
Do take statins and other medications prescribed by your doctor, as these are helpful. Statins contribute to reversal of atherosclerosis. Dr. Esselstyn and all the doctors we follow, use them for their patients, if indicated. If you are able to identify and improve the lifestyle aspects that are key to your metabolism, perhaps the medications can be reduced or eliminated in the future. How's your homosystein level? Your CRP? Lipo-a ?
My best advice follows here: Get medical advice from Dr. Fuhrman (www.drfuhrman.com , $50/mo to ask medical questions). Doctors know a lot of stuff. They can identify problems based on blood tests, etc. that is extremely valuable.
Or, choose Dr. Esselstyn. Several people have contacted Dr. Esselstyn by phone. Really, the diet is the same as Fuhrman, except for the question of nuts & seeds. My opinion is not to worry about whether to eat nuts and seeds, for the time being.
It's far more important to get medical counseling from Fuhrman or Esselstyn for your blood tests, and get any additional information they ask for. Place your faith in the doctor you choose, and follow precisely, with confidence.
Sincerely yours, EngineerGuyView Thread

How is everyone doing here ?
I decided to peek into nutrients in herbs and spices, and it turns out they are anti-oxidant powerhouses. A 3 ounce jar of Oregano has the anti-oxidants of nearly 90 pomegranates.
So now in addition to cinnamon and blueberries in my oatmeal, I add parsely flakes. On my breakfast eggwhites and lunch salad, I add the same parsely and or oregano, and cook with more herbs and spices, too. Well, working on the spices. The herbs are easy to add.
So find a nice blend and add to your green glop, or vary from day to day.
My SUUNTO heart rate monitor lost connection with a damaged chest belt. SUUNTO surprised me and gave me a free replacement, monitor and chest belt, even though it was out of warranty. I had been thinking of buying a new one, almost $300. They've replaced it twice now at no cost.
I hope everyone is doing well ! I had a CT Scan yesterday. I suppose my new cardiologist wants a bit of current view on my heart.

A great 13 minute video
http://www.vegsource.com/news/2012/04/dr-mcdougall-cuts-corporate-health-care-expenses-in-half-using-starch-based-diet-video.html
This is about Dr. McDougall program, as an employee health care reduction option. For Blue Care-Blue Cross employees, it reduced health care costs by 44%, in the first year. That is amazing.
Isn't it ironic, that this could not be posted on the Diabetes Type 2 website, because it appears to solicit for something?

Here's an amazing reference
www.pubmed.com/18799354
Dr. Ornish collaborated with Nobel Prize winner Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn. She got the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine, for work with telomeres, and the discovery of telomerase, the enzyme that repairs telomeres.
Telomeres are like the plastic sleeve on the ends of shoelaces, except telomeres are on the ends of DNA twisted pairs, in our chromosomes. As we age, the telomeres shorten, and when the telomeres get too short, the DNA unravels, and then we unravel. It's a theory of aging.
The Ornish diet increased telomerase by 30%. That is amazing.

I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend a movie: Forks over Knives. (The title symbolizes the benefit of food (Forks) is greater than the benefit of surgery (knives).)
You can rent it on Netflix, or buy it at www.forksoverknives.com
I expected my wife to listen to 10 minutes of it, and then leave, as is typical. Instead she listened to all 90 minutes, and then ordered 4 DVDs for ourselves, family and friends. This is about the strongest endorsement I can make !!
The movie interviewed Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Campbell, and quite a few others. It was very well done.

I haven't been around a lot for the last couple months.
I am squandering my youth in front of computer terminals at work, spending too many hours there. But, I do like the work. Just too many hours.
I have given my first talk, or presentation, to publicize the Fuhrman program. I gave it to my Sunday School class, at church. The talk was much better received than I thought it would be. Everyone was interested, and liked it. I was pretty much amazed. The talk was much too long, so I have to cut it down to an hour. The message of the talk is that this diet is the most effective medical treatment available, for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and many more. I emphasize medical publications.
It's my calling.

A large long term study found a dose-effect relationship between red meat consumption and premature death. Processed beef (cold cuts, etc) were much worse.

I've been reading here quite a bit and have posted a couple times.
I'm curious if anyone has had a CT angiogram and has lowered their calcium score on a follow up test.
I had the above test 2 years ago with a calcium score of 327
which caused me to change my diet. I was told at the time the plaque in my arteries did not obstruct blood flow and most of it was calcified meaning it had been there for a long time.
After following a very strict way of eating the past two years I had a follow up test yesterday and expected my score to either remain the same or maybe even drop. The calcium score from my test yesterday was 380. The Dr who read the scan informed me the both scores are basically identical as the scoring/scan can be off 10-20% and not to get hung up on the number. Needless to say
I'm hung up on the number

My bloods are pretty good
Total Choeesterol 119
HDL 57
LDL 49
Triglycerides 64
LDL/HDL ratio 0.86
So I'm curios if any of you have had follow up CT angiograms that resulted a lower calcium score
Thanks!View Thread
My own experience bears out his own. I stopped eating wheat products completely and my appetite diminished, my belly shunk 6", and my lipids improved considerably. Admittedly I was on a diet to increase vegetables as well, but I've done that before while eating wheat and the results were not as dramatic as they are now.
He's a cardiologist and not in the low fat camp, but I think he's focusing on an important issue. Has anyone else read his book or followed his advice about not eating wheat?
