For the past ten plus years I have had on again/off again high blood pressure. During these high blood pressure episodes I have even higher blood pressure spikes. These spikes have gone as high as 214/125 and they usually occur in the middle of the night while I am sleeping. I have gone to several cardiologists and all they want to do is put me on beta blockers. Beta blockers make my blood pressure spike even higher and both time I have taken them, I ended up in an ER. About the only bp meds I can take now Clonidine. I try to monitor my bp throughout the day because I am now even having spikes during the day, although they are not as high as those at night.
I have been tested for a pheochromocytoma several times in the past. At first even though my results were out of range, I was told that they weren't out of range enough.
In the last 3 months I have been tested three times, twice it was negative and once the results were for a plasma test:
A couple of weeks after this plasma test and before I had these results I was instructed to take a 24 hr urine and the results were normal. (I have had 24 hr. urines in the past that were out of range, but were told they were not out of range enough.)
Since the 24 hr urine came back normal, I was told that I didn't have a pheochromocytoma and that all I had was wild, hard to treat high blood pressure. Since I cannot take anything but Clonidine now and I am having an extremely difficult time keeping my blood pressure spikes under control, I just don't know what to do. It is causing havoc with my life because of the lack of sleep and the fatigue.
Any insight would be appreciated. If there is a facility/doctor that specializes in this type of blood pressure I would appreciate that information too.
I have also been to several endocrinologists, they test once and tell me nothing is wrong. View Thread
