What has helped me: moving to Africa, where the diet is MUCH lower in sugar, meat, processed foods, dairy, and bread; higher in vegetables (especially tomatoes) and rice (white, unfortunately). Almost nothing packaged or processed.
Making sure I do not get constipated by eating high-fiber foods and drinking a ton of water. And, as I posted in another thread, bitter lemon soda. Yup. Can't explain that at all.
Trying to handle stress, which triggers the cramps for me. I have actually come to think this is a major factor.
What has NOT helped me: elimination of any foods (although I eat pretty healthy in general anyway), Zelnorm, magnesium supplement (although it helped my leg cramps), homeopathic remedy for colic, simethicone.
You do the best you can. Then you buck up and get on with your life, pain or no pain. You learn to put your attention on the things that make life worthwhile!View Thread
This is crazy, but I discovered over the past year or so that when I have lower-bowel cramps, if I drink a Schweppes Bitter Lemon, it actually helps "untie the knots" and resolves the cramps.
I have not discovered that other soda pops do anything at all. I drink few sugary drinks or soda pop. And I don't know if it has anything to do with the quinine, the lemon zest, or what. I just know it's working for me.
Things that didn't work for me included: dietary changes, Zelnorm, Mylanta Gas, homeopathic remedy for colic, peppermint tea... until now, it's just been "deal with it" but this seems to be working. Hallelujah!
