I knew PT would be difficult and painful but did well in rehab. When I came home I arranged for home health PT. I did 2 sessions with therapist but she made me scream and beg her to stop both times. I was depressed and felt very weak and out of control of my own body. It was the flexion...she was doing the ankle slide but didn't do it slowly and in increments, just shoved my foot towards my body and I nearly came out of my skin. I put it out there on Facebook and so many told me this was not right and to go with a different therapist which I have. I'll see how it goes today when he is scheduled to come. I am trying to do a lot on my own. Right now I'm feeling a little pessimistic because it is coming back so slowly. It's been 3 weeks. I feel like my recovery is a full time job. I have a CPM machine as well as doing ROM and strengthening exercises. I guess I wanted to come on here to compare with others. I am full committed to getting as much of my knee back that I can. 100% would be great. Would love to hear from others with any tips of advice. Thank you!View Thread
My leg is stuck i am limited with the bend which is a problem when it comes to stairs i STILL have not got my muscle in my quads back.
my surgery was amazing and i was fitted with a different knee replacement because of my age, due to some organisational skills from the hospitali did not get physio for two weeks after my op and when i did i was getting just half a hour a week which was ridicolous i had excercises to do at home but its hard to them when your brain tells you "dont do that, that will hurt" i know myself that i should have tried harder with physio at home but im just confused as to why my knee is so stiff, wont bend or straighten properly, even if you try to push it, it will not move it is stuck, are there any options that can help loosen it? i have being attending a gym ever since trying to gain muslce but i have hardly gained any which i also do not understand? i had alot of muscle there before because i use to be a dancer, i just dont understand how ive lost so much muscle and cant get it back?View Thread
I injured my knee falling in the road way over a year ago and re injured it back in September. I had 6 weeks of physio, followed by months of waiting for MRI. My doctor and physio initially thought I had a torn meniscus and ligament damage.
But MRI scan results came back clean and told it was probably the muscle, and was suggested to go back for more physio. I was never seen by a OS, nor did one look at my MRI.
I still am in constant daily pain down the sides, across and inside the knee, my knee cracks with pain, and it feels that the pain has gotten worse and the knee feels wrong.
Should I get a second opinion?View Thread
I have bi-lateral hip replacements, one done with the posterior/lateral approach and the more recent (6 years) with the anterior approach...no muscles/ligaments cut (left side). I have chronic, deep-seated groin/pelvic area pain on that side. Went thru all the "big" tests....aspiration and bone scan and infection/loosening was ruled out. It's almost as though something is being "impinged" in there..with certain movements. The pain will wake me in the middle of the night when I try to straighten my bent leg. No pain when walking...but it does hurt to cough (hernia ruled out) and, often times, I have to lift my leg manually to get into my car. I do have moderate degenerative disk disease and lumbar stenosis and it's been suggested the groin pain could be coming from my back. I really don't feel it is...it definately feels like a "mechanical" issue with the ball part of the prosthesis...or possibly some bursitis? I plan on seeing my OS soon (again) but, when he looks at my x-rays, he assures me that all looks good. What sort of tests should I ask for to test for impingement? I'm at my wit's end with this pain....Thanks so much for reading!View Thread
I feel my progress is going well. I am at 0 bil with extension. For flexion ,my right knee is 124 and my left is 126. I rarely take a Tramadol, and take Aleve 2 times daily.
Besides for sleeping, my other problem seems to be that I cry a lot. I have no appetite..and have lost 13 # since being home. I know I need to get out of the house more..but due to our horrible winter weather...I still have home PT. ( starting output next week). I am a nurse, and a people person. I still have 5 weeks before I am to return to work 1/2 days. I got out this weekend both days..but hurt today..so back to ice packs and my recliner:(
Any advice from other who have been here would be greatly appreciated! ESP on how to get thru the emotional part of this.
Thanks!View Thread
Patella, which the Doc says he is going to cut bone and use it too prop the knee up to hold it in place don't sound good to me what do I do and where can I get another opinion when docs I have talk to say they would not touch it.View Thread
1 month after the surgery, I had to have scar bands broke up - then in March after my surgery (7 Months) I had to have a scope done on the same knee to have a fluid pocket removed. I still do the PT exercises, I ride the bike, do treadmill but I can not do stairs. I have pain every day on the top of my knee - and if anything even touches my knee i cringe in pain. I can not sit with my leg at a down angle for very long. I fall all the time. I have been to the ER 4 times for severe falls. I just fell yesterday while standing still in the shower. I HATE my knee. I have more pain with the replacement than I did with my old knee - and I never fell before.View Thread
BUT he pulled off some fluid to see what it looked like - it was blood, 10-20 mls at least. He says "You should feel better now, goodbye" NO interest in finding the cause, NO suggestions for what it could be, NO questions about meds or diet or activity that could be the cause of bleeding in the area.
I asked, can we do other imaging for diagnostics? No.
I ask, why is it bleeding? He says, oh sometimes you get hemarthrosis (bleeding into the joint). Well duh.
I ask, what do you do about it? He says, oh it usually only happens once. He shoots in some marcaine, a local anesthetic. Says it will last 12 hours. It lasted one hour.
3 days later the fluid is back.
So this guy has ZERO interest in fixing my problem. Is this normal for these guys? He didn't even suggest I go to an immunologist.
My GP is helping me get on a waiting list for a second opinion. This is Canada, don't get me started on the waiting lists.
Now I meet another woman who had the same surgeon do her TKR. Two years it takes her to find another surgeon who diagnoses the problem - the first surgeon had put a right knee implant into her left knee.Same guy I had!
So it seems there are lots of ways to get a bad fit. That is what I am thinking for now, not even beginning to think about allergic reaction - sure hope it isn't that!View Thread

I had to go in for an emergency procedure to have my prosthesis removed and a temporary implant put in. 15 days in hospital I was so sick from the infection. I went home with a "Pick Line", and home care came in each morning to change my I'VE bag. This went on for 2 months.
By November, 2012, 5 months later, and several test confirming the infection had cleared, a new prosthesis surgery was successfully conducted. Because there was so much intricate work done, according to my Doc, I had to wait 6 weeks before starting a more intense Physio Therapy program.
All was going great and my wife and I couldn't believe how well I was recovering. Until Monday, January 7th, not quite 2 months ago. One of the stretching exercises my Physio Therapist was doing, was laying me on my stomach, sitting beside me with her back to me, and bending my knee as far as she could, until I told her to stop. She has 30 years of experience so I figured she knew what she was doing. That night, I was in agony. I went back a few more times, explaining my pain and making sure she took it easy. But my knee only seemed to worsen so I stopped after a few more sessions.
I remain in moderate pain which basically means that with all the meds I'm on, I'm just accepting and coping with the pain. My wife and I left the end of January for the Dominican Republic, and will be here until the end of April. My next appointment with my Doc is a few days after we return.
The pain hasn't worsened but hasn't improved either. But what's different and unique is that while the left side of my knee (if you sliced it down the middle...) feels fine. All the pain is in the right side of the knee. Also, the right side feels numb, similar to when you have teeth frozen before a filling. I can poke the right side with a needle and feel barely anything.
I'm guessing I've suffered nerve damage from the Physio Therapist over extending my knee with her aggressive bending. My question being; has anyone experienced anything of a similar nature, and was there a solution??? I want to get off the narcotics, (Oxyneo, Endocet, Celebrex. And something for my stomach...), fearing that my poor liver is slowly being destroyed.
Any comments, suggestion or input will be appreciated. I don't get to see my Ortho Doc until the end of April, and I fear I may be facing another surgery to repair nerve damage, but certainly this is only speculation right now. Oh Yeah... Besides my 2 knee replacements, in between I had a hip replacement, and both shoulders operated on. I'll be turning just 54 on my birthday in March. As I said before, the product of wrestling too many drunks and domestic disputes for 26 1/2 years, and too many sports at the same time.
Any input will be appreciated, and thanks for reading my Novel, ha....... wB...View Thread

My concern is; now what? She is very stressed, and unsure that knee replacement is the answer, although she was warned years ago that someday it might be inevitable. Surely, the state of the art has improved! There must be more knowledge know about these issues, and better solutions for resolving them. I am determined to look for possible solutions, as i feel responsible for allowing the original surgery. Anyone have any experience with this problem?View Thread
One month after my operation, I've started experiencing extreme fatigue--feel like I'm going to faint standing in line anywhere, for example. I've cut back on my Percocet (within the last 3 weeks), but still have to take it to get through P.T. (or at least to make any progress in P.T.). Otherwise, everything is going well. Any ideas about what could be causing this?View Thread
Best advice is to follow PT and stay with the "work", it will pay dividends.
Went back to work after 2 weeks and continued to improve. Work out twice a day either elliptical or stationary bike, an hour at a time. Have been walking up to 47 1/2 miles in an hour. Do weights every other day and stretching daily. It will pay dividends!
It as been 4 months now and my knees are still very "tight", could be a by product of all the exercises, but the range of motion is getting better each day. Have ridden a mountain bike outside for a couple of hours at a time, really no significant issues, need to keep the seat a tad higher, maybe I grew some since the procedure. Hoping after all that I have read on line that the 6 month -1 year, will be back to "normal". Yes my knee are still warm at times and I have tenderness in the joint and sometimes difficulty getting flexation and extension out of the joints, but would suggest if you were thinking of having it done, doing both a the same time is smart, assuming you prep with conditioning before and continue after the procedure. It will be difficult at first, but as all things, it will improve over time. Still make it a point to ice a couple times a day. I take an ANSAID 25 milligram 2x a day to deal with the aches and pains. Going to be 63 this year and don't want life to get in the way with enjoyment.
Think positive and work hard. Your PT regime is the key to "pain free" living.View Thread
. I am a side sleeper, and even with a soft pillow between knees, it is unbearable. 3. I have periods almost daily where I break down and just cry. I question my decision to do this surgery at all esp both at once. (I know I will be glad later) I just feel I am not doing as well as I should be. When does all this get better? Thanks for any advice you have. SandiView Thread

Would you all agree that these surgeries create a lot of inflammation
in our bodies....
Going into this replacement, I had FM, OA and degeneration in many areas of my body, but came out worse from my surgery...
Only thing really different is NO GROIN PAIN.
I've been working for 2+ yrs dealing with it all and now taking a
new anti inflammatory supplement, Anatabloc and getting some relief in less than 1 month....so I'm hoping it continues....
But this Chronic Inflammation is a huge issue. My knee and ankle and feet are feeling some relief.....View Thread
