I am around your age and have dealt with the same problem. The remedy that works for me is a FemRing and Estrace cream applied twice a week to all moist girl-parts. Regular intercourse also helps. The FemRing and Estrace are prescription drugs.
I don't know what state you live in, but you should check out Medicaid. In many states it provides cost free health care with minimal co-pays for prescription drugs. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act, many states have upgraded Medicaid to cover more people and it has benefited many low income women too young for Medicare.View Thread
I am sorry you are having a reaction to Estrace Cream. I have used estrace cream for 7 years and have never had any negative reaction. Since I no longer have a uterus I use estrace cream on my labia and clitoris and a FemRing inserted in my vagina. It keeps my girl parts happy and healthy.
Check with your Doctor, maybe Premarin cream would be better for you.View Thread
An_255177, I agree with you that menopause sucks! According to my gynecologist and my own experience, frequent sex does not contribute to vaginal dryness. In fact it helps alleviate vaginal dryness. My doctor said it is a true case of use it or lose it. As a menopause veteran, I know the discomfort that you are experiencing and Replens really did little for me. You may not like the idea of prescription hormone treatments but low dose vaginal cream, Estrace and/or Premarin were the panacea for me. The dose is low enough that little if any of the estrogen gets in your system. It just does a great job of rejuvenating the vaginal tissues and restoring the natural moisture needed for comfortable sex. I apply it three times a week. I suggest that you speak with your gynecologist about this. It won't cure the hot flashes, mood swings and other plagues of menopause, but it takes care of the vaginal dryness. I would hate to be without it! View Thread
Sorry joni60 , I am in my late 50's, post menopausal and I still like sex and don't want to be without it. I had my struggles with vaginal dryness but once that was conquered (Estrace Cream and FemRing) I am good to go. My libido is not what it was in my twenties and thirties but it still keeps me enjoying sex a couple times a week.View Thread
Claate , you will find Dr. Minkin to be a very caring and compassionate gynecologist that will give you thoughtful and professional advice. Her kind and considerate responses to posters is what attracted me to this community.
An_250719, welcome to menopause! As a menopause veteran that suffered the same symptoms I can tell you from my experience that HRT is the best answer. I tried oral systemic estrogen of several brands with limited results but had the best success with Femring and Estrace Cream. The Femring is a plastic estrogen emitting ring inserted into the vagina every three months. This combined with Estrace cream applied to the labia, clitoris, vaginal opening and urethral opening works well for me. My libido is not back to where it was at twenty-five but I do enjoy sex without pain twice a week and the lubrication is back. Another thing I learned is that avoiding sex makes it worse. Frequent intercourse is not only good for our self-esteem it is good for our girl-parts. I had my uterus removed years ago so I can safely take estrogen without progesterone. Your GYN can help you decide if these methods are safe for you. It seems with HRT, one size doesn't fit all. But there is help for you.
Estrace Cream and Premarin Cream are estrogen containing creams that are designed specifically to combat vaginal atrophy and dryness. Both are prescription and both are low dose estrogen designed to place the hormone is placed directly where needed most and very little gets in your system. I am sure there are others. I have had no luck with over the counter moisturizers.
