My boyfriend just passed away from an allergic reaction to the 5-FU chemotherapy. he passed through his previous chemo with flying colors (great bloodwork). After his death I decided to look into this 5-FU and read that approx. 8% of the population has a DPD deficiency that can't metabolize the 5-FU. Testing is available to see if a patient has this deficiency and I have inquired with his doctor to see if he was tested.
My boyfriend was a Jehovah's Witness and therefore refused a blood transfusion after his illness from the 5-FU. This was the biggest problem in his death, but if he had been tested BEFORE he was given the 5-FU and found that he had a DPD deficiency, there may have been an alternative chemo treatment for him. Does anyone know if there would have been?View Thread
