Ms. Kemmis -- Thanks so much for your expert advice. With the guidance of my spin instructor, I raise the bike's handle bars to allow for an upright position. My spin classes are supplemented with the impact of brisk walking and stairclimbing. Dumbbells are heavy, but not too heavy.

I'm a very lean, athletic 28 year-old with osteoporosis. I take the birth control pill Yasmin to treat amenorrhea. Does this type of synthetic estrogen have the same bone-preserving effect of endogenous estrogen?
Nothing. I've tried a series of bisphosphonates and 2 rounds of Forteo. He recommends the usual calcium plus D and weight baring exercise. Perhaps his most notable recommenation -- weight restoration.
Though I'm now in recovery, an eating disorder I developed at age 12 resulted in fifteen years of abnormal menses. I've used birth control pills as my estrogen source. Looking back over the last two years, I suppose I've lived with a false sense of security thinking that Forteo would be my saving grace. Now I realize I must continue to focus on reaching a more normal BMI.
I also remind myself that I've not yet fractured so hope is not lost. Bone Babe often reminds us that the T-score is a marker of osteoporosis, but doesn't doom us to broken bones. I'm tempted to frame her words on my wall!View Thread
