I had my Iyengar teacher and my exercise class teacher (both women in their fifties, and both used to working with seniors - I am 59, not exactly a senior, but...) check out the forward and side bend issues. Their checking revealed identical results, although they don't know each other and checked with various medical people: There CAN be a problem with forward and side bends is if one does them hunched forward; however, if one keeps a straight back and neck, which I always have done, there should be no problem. Both teacher slightly modify certain exercises they give the class to accommodate my needs.View Thread
I know that bonebabe and others on this site recommend not doing any forward or side bends (twists). However, you may want to consult the literature, as there are differences of opinion in the matter. I, too, have osteoporosis - severe osteoporosis. However, I have always done bending and twisting in every direction, with absolutely no problem. As a matter of fact, I feel excellent when I do them, and have never had a fracture or break.
I agree that we should get our calcium from food sources, but my question was the advisability of taking in dairy. There is more and more research on the adverse affects of dairy on osteoporosis. There are plenty of other food sources for calcium anyone - tahini, dark green leafy vegetables, seaweed, sardines, and more.View Thread
Naturopaths and various osteoporosis experts say that dairy products are not good for osteoporosis, because eating them makes one's body acidic, and in order to neutralize the acid, calcium is leeched from the bones. Does anyone know any more about this? It is sure confusing...View Thread
Just want to say that if for whatever reason you cannot tolerate the regular osteop. medications, it may also help to take a HRT medication, which is a second-line treatment for osteop. I agree with bonebabe that with a low T-score, diet, calcium and exercise is probably not enough; however, some people cannot tolerate the medications and simply have to live with their osteoporosis, doing what they can do to keep themselves in good shape. Exercise for balance and coordination can also contribute to less falling and fewer fractures.View Thread
I don't have any more up to date info on myself (my last post was four months ago), but want to say that I'm keeping up with calcium vit. D supplements, weight lifting, walking, some yoga (I should be doing more) AND recently began taking a second-line osteop. med, which is Evorel Conti. It's an HRT medication, and not really intended for osteop., but it can help, and is known to have few side effects for otherwise-healthy women. It's a patch worn on the skin, and changed twice weekly.
I hope everyone out there knows that calcium is best absorbed along with vitamin C and away from dairy, so I am sure to take my supplement at a meal which doesn't include dairy, and, if possible, with a glass of orange juice.
I plan to have my bone density checked this summer, one year after the last check-up, and am keeping my fingers crossed that my numbers will have improved.
I am SO HAPPY to have read this. In a recent bone density exam, my bones were shown to have gone downhill severely in a short period of time, regardless of the fact that I have been exercising regularly for at least 15 years, and always take calcium and vit D, and have a good, healthy diet. Don't smoke or have any other health problems except 20 years ago I had my gall bladder removed. The doctors are puzzled as to why I should have this problem, and of course are urging me to take the "heavy" meds, which I'm resisting because of the side effects. I plan to do more with weights, and I"m keeping my fingers crossed.View Thread
