Two years ago my G.P. recommended that I start taking Fosomax based on the test results on bone density of my hips. Having heard of awful possible side effects, I refused. I recently had another bone density test which showed that bone density had continued to decline in my lumbar region to -2.9 and my hip as well. This time, on the advice of a friend, I requested to see a specialist in osteoporosis, who it turns out is a an endocrinologist. Being as I have Addison's Disease, I already have an endocrinologist. She reviewed my test results and concluded that they had been misinterpreted due to the maintenance dose of steroids I take for the A.D. She recalculated the hip density and the result is that I am not presently at risk of a fracture. She prescribed 60 mg of Evista daily instead of the Fosamax. Her rationale is that Fosamax is best used when you are in really bad shape, because it is not known how long one can safely take it, and at this point 5 years is considered maximum. I wish my GP had referred me to my endocrinologist to discuss bone density two years ago when she first started pushing me take the Fosamax. And I am also relieved that I didn't let her convince me to take Fosamax.View Thread
