Hi OHGirl, So sorry to hear you are feeling bad. Have you had your Vit D checked? I was in misery with bone/joint/muscle pain and cramps in feet 3 years ago. After seeing at least 3 pprimary docs with no help, a Rheumatologist asked if anyone had checked my Vit D. He checked and it was deficient -- 16. Now the top medical researcher physicians at Harvard, U Cal, Boston and other institutions say the minimum level should be at least 50. I had osteomalacia (adult form of rickets) and was given Rx of 50,000 iu of Vit D one time per week for 8 weeks. Now I take 4000 iu a day to keep my level in the optimal level of 60-80. A year later I then went to a top bone specialist on the east coast (I'm in Texas) because I still wasn't feeling great. He said I needed to be taking calcium (citrate not carbonate). The Texas doc said don't take any calcium because he thought mine was elevated. The east coast doc said serum calcium will always appear normal or elevated with Vit D deficiency -- they have to check ionized calcium and/or PTH levels. The east coast doc said wait a year until I had a chance to replenish my Vit D before considering taking a bisphosphonate. He also said they do not improve bone density in the spine. And he said he does not prescribe Boniva due to evidence of spontaneous femur fractures in a number of women. Watch this video report by Univ California-Davis "Vitamin D and Prevention of Chronic Disease." If your Vit D level is beneath 50, you must find a physician familiar with treating this. Grassroots Health organization has two other very important reports (also filmed at U Cal-David). One is by Dr. Cedric Garland (UC-San Diego) and the other by Dr. Robert Heaney (Creighton). The Garland report is how major cancers (lung, colon, breast) have been proven to be reduced dramatically by blood levels of 50> Vit D (w/calcium citrate). The Heaney report is about how we must have adequate calcium for Vit D to work AND enough Vit D for calcium to be absorbed. Vit D deficiency is considered a PANDEMIC. Good luck!View Thread
