What's Happening Now
This is all new to me. I'm at a loss of words and knowledge about the steps of treating cancer. I've been reading up on hysterectomies, radiation, chemotherapy, and such. I'm just looking for advice, support, and your experience to better understand what I will be experiencing in the next couple of days/weeks/months.
Thanks in advance.View Thread
cancer and have survived 8 years but I have to do chemo every couple years as it comes back. I am very interested in what kind of herbs you took and information on the Iscadoor from Germany. If you see this please reply.View Thread
Fast forward to this month: After ignoring abdominal pains that have been with me for over a year, I finally went to the ER after having woken up 3 nights in one month to sever abdominal pain, vomiting, cold sweats and passing out. I don;t have insurance so I had to go to the county hospital where after 14 hours of waiting, I saw a doctor and had a sonogram. It revealed an enlarged uterus and a cyst that measures around 10inx11inx9in. The ER doctor told me she would put in for an appointment for me with their low-cost clinic and I was to call in 3 days to find out when my appointment was. I called on the designated day and was told that the earliest I could get in to talk to a surgeon re: the sono and surgery in in NOVEMBER.
I'm in pain here and I don;t think waiting until November is going to be feasible BUT I have no other options. I'm already devestated at the thought of losing my last ovary without ever having had a child.
Since I am still having my period regularly, I wonder if I can get pregnant before my appointment? I don't even know if it's possible or healthy and I can't find information on the internet about getting pregnant with a cyst this big.View Thread

If you're diagnosed with ovarian cysts, it's important to know that MOST are benign. If non-surgical treatment (e.g., birth control pills) doesn't resolve them enough to give you symptom relief and they need to be surgically removed, a surgeon skilled in doing cystectomies may be able to remove just the cyst(s) leaving your ovary(ies) for the essential hormones that they produce.
You can read about ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer here -

My gyn of 20 years used ovarian cancer scare tactics to rush me into surgery. Despite a benign frozen section of the cyst, he and two gyn residents removed both ovaries and my uterus. This was against the recommendation of "his" oncologist to remove just the one ovary.
I wish I'd known more about the high rate of unnecessary female organ removal and the dangers of Graduate Medical Education programs. I also wish I'd trusted my inner voice. My trust in my gyn trumped my intuition.
As indicated in the link I provided, the HERS Foundation can help you understand your diagnosis and treatment options if the cyst warrants treatment. Best to you!View Thread
How long has she had this cyst, how large is it and does it look suspicious? Solid cysts with "fingers" are the most concerning. If a cyst gets too large and doesn't resolve over many months or looks suspicious then it may need to be removed. It's best to have a surgeon skilled in cystectomy to give the best chance of removing just the cyst leaving the ovary intact. Here's a lot of info about ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer -

Honey lets look at the possibilities--your doctors are trying
to save you some of your eggs for the future. Your eggs are your children. You have every right to mourn the loss of your fertility It wasn't part of the deal or hope. Ask the doctors what is the % of success, whats the procedure, how long can they be stored..ask your questions to get good info, You're in my prayers and get some answers.View Thread
Did the surgeon explain what he meant by "further clinical findings?" It seems like the pathology report should be the prevailing finding. I would get clarification and a copy of your records and then maybe even a second opinion. Chemo is hard enough to tolerate but also has many long-term adverse effects on health, so you want to be sure it's necessary before proceeding. Chemo is big business and oncologists buy the drugs and then sell to their patients at big markups. If you need it, of course this is moot.View Thread
I have a sister who had breast cancer twice and I understand that puts me at greater risk of ovarian cancer, even though she tested negative for the BRCA gene.
Do post-menopausal women get ovarian cysts, fibroids, polyps?View Thread
I worked with a woman who had a very strong family history of both breast and ovarian cancer. Her sister and at least one aunt had ovarian cancer. Her mom and several aunts had breast cancer. But her gyn said her ovaries were too important to have them prophylactically removed so he monitored her closely. She still had her ovaries last time I saw her and she was close to age 50.
The uterus and ovaries have lifelong functions. Their removal has serious health consequences. Here's a short video detailing their functions and consequences of removal -

Ovary removal (or ovary failure after hysterectomy) increases risk of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, hip fracture, Parkinsonism, dementia, cognitive impairment, depression and anxiety. Here are some other resources:

My gyn removed my uterus and both ovaries 6 years ago when all that needed to be removed was a benign cyst or one ovary. My life and health have been in a tailspin ever since. I became suicidally depressed (never had depression before). I also aged 10-15 years almost overnight despite being on estrogen. I now have the inevitable post-hyst big belly and back pain due to the loss of pelvic integrity.
Please research and be sure you know your personal risks for OC before making this serious decision. Also, there are diet and lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risks.
Hope I've been of some help!View Thread
When my daughter had fertility issues it was discovered that she had Leiden Factor V. I was tested and I have it, too. After my OC surgery I was carefully watched for blood clots, and given blood thinners. At this time I do nothing about the Factor V. I'd be interested in knowing what your doctor says about the FV in addition to giving you coumadin.
I'm very happy for you that you survived such a high stage cancer, and know how awful it must have been to do so much chemo. I did the chemo for just 6 treatments and much of the time felt pretty lousy. I wish you good health in the future.
I use vaginal estrogen and am told that very little gets into the blood stream. My oncological gynecologists have all told me the same thing. My main reason for using it is the incontinence I experienced after the hysterectomy. I'm 66, though, so maybe that is why I'm having a problem.
I'd be interested in any info you might be able to tell me about the Factor V. Thanks! justjudy1945View Thread

What makes you think you have ovarian cancer (OC)? OC is quite rare with a woman's lifetime chance being less than 2%. Ovarian cysts are very common and are almost always benign and will eventually go away on their own, no treatment needed.
Here are a couple of sources of info on ovarian cysts -
http://www.ovaryresearch.com/ovarian_cysts.htm
Ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer
I developed an ovarian cyst (which looked somewhat suspicious on ultrasound). My gyn rushed me into surgery and removed my sex organs (uterus and both ovaries) even though the cyst was benign. This was against "his" oncologist's recommendation to only remove the one ovary. And I discovered afterwards that a surgeon skilled in doing cystectomies could probably have removed just the cyst leaving my ovary (as well as my uterus and other ovary) intact.
Hope this helps! Post back and let us know what you find out and how you're doing.View Thread
