My name is Dorit and I am doing some research on what women think about the information they find on the web on the subject of ovarian cancer -- with an eye to potentially improving the quality and quantity of unbiased articles available.
Much of what I have found is not very helpful (too generic or medical jargon I don't understand), but I was hoping to hear from some other ladies about their experiences. I am seeking 3-4 people who would be willing to do a 10 question phone interview so that I can organize people's experiences into a report. I will happily send a small token of appreciation (a gift card) for anyone willing to help out. Thanks so much in advance for your assistance! Please contact me at: doritbm@yahoo.comView Thread

For the past few months, I've been dealing with the feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation, bloating that makes me look several months pregnant, frequent urination, pelvic pressure, painful intercourse, & dull lower back pain. I've had a CA-125 blood test, pelvic ultrasound, vaginal ultrasound, stomach x-ray, gastric emptying test, and a colonoscopy & upper GI - all of which showed nothing wrong. The doctors say it's probably just IBS, but I'm not convinced. I know my body and I feel that something is definitely wrong. In the last two weeks, the symptoms have gotten agressively worse - to the point where I feel lousy almost every day. Is it possible that all of these tests could have missed ovarian cancer ? How do I get the doctors to explore further ?View Thread

My friend is a 57 year old woman who is in fair to good health. She had abdominal pains, so she was sent for a Pelvic Sonogram. While at the Radiologist, the doc decided to also do a Liver Ultrasound. She lives far away from me, so I haven't seen the test results. But she read me the impressions. We seem to think they are suspecting some kind of cancer, but we aren't sure. She read me a bunch of words I can't find on the Internet. Maybe the doc who wrote up the report spelled several words wrong.
Both Sonograms see a mass, but they are uncertain of what ttr is. The one in the Liver is described like this. The mass is "hypoechoic vague in Liver". I couldn't find the word hypoechoic. The Liver mass also had these words, "isoechoic heptic". Does anyone k iw what these words mean? And is there a Liver Cancer board?
The pelvic Sonogram used these words. I believe what they saw was described as being "of Heterogeneity". I don't know if this is good or bad. The pelvic mass was also described as Adnexal. What does the word, Adnexal mean? It seems to refer to a place in the female body that is adjacent to the Uterus. However, my friend doesn't have a Uterus. She had a partial Hysterectomy at age 44 due to Fibroid tumors. She has been much better ever since.
She does have a Multi goiter Thyroid she never went back to the doc for. She also sufferers from uncontrollable Epilepsy since she was 14. She's been on Tegretol about 30 years, and it works better than anything else ever did. But she still gets several a month.
A year ago her Tegretol went toxic. We never found out what caused that. I think the Tegretol going Toxic is related to these masses they said they saw.
At this point we don't know if she has 2 tumors or 2 cysts. We also don't k know if they are benign or Malignant.
If these are malignant growths I am very scared because Adnexal seems to mean an area of the body outside a vital organ. So this may have already spread. I realize I'm not giving you anything specific to go on. So can anyone venture an educated guess?
And why are there so few cancer boards? I think there really should have been a Liver cancer Board. IMHOView Thread

The results:
Mass in the mid line extending to right - 10.8x11.9x19.3 cm.
He sent me to an OBGYN.
The OBGYN said they would do surgery, probably removing the right ovary where it stems from as best they can tell but wanted to run a CA125 test first.
The results: Levels at 71.
He immediately referred me to an OBGYN Oncologist they say to make sure that it is not cancer and they can operate. The Oncologist said 6-8 weeks to get me in for clearance but after my OBGYN faxed the test results, they can get me in the 12th (it is the 2nd) and suggest I rest and take it easy until my appointment. Now, I feel scared. I thought this was a precautionary appointment but when she confirmed my test results with me she said Wow twice and let's see what we can do to get you in next week.
My question is - how likely is it that this is in fact Ovarian Cancer? I am only 29 but have no children and have never taken birth control. I know blood is flowing through the mass and there is no pelvic fluid found in the ultrasound.
In the test notes it reads: differential diagnosis includes ovarian tumor versus endemetrioma. But my OBGYN thought it was probably just a large cyst or series of cysts.
Both the OBGYN and the Oncologist are some of the best around here since I have the good fortune of living near Chicago. I know I need to ask the doctor these questions, but it is a long time to wait and I was hoping for some honest feedback and experiences.
Thank You.View Thread
After debulking surgery and chemo, her ca125 level is at 19.
A couple of weeks ago she started having a pinkish discharge and cramping if she was up on her feet for any length of time. Her gyn-oncologist doesn't seem worried, but I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced this?View Thread
During my initial visit - with a resident - he didn't seem to think that it was a serious issue especially since it came up as a result of another problem. He said he didn't find anything in his examination but that I had 2 options - I could do nothing and leave things as they were or have exploratory surgery. Thankfully I opted for the surgery which took place on Feb 3, 2011. The results came back on Mar 7th and I've been diagnosed with Stage IIB ovarian cancer. I am scheduled for 6 cycles of chemotherapy of Paclitaxel (Taxol) and Carboplatin (Paraplatin). I had my first treatment on March 24th and while I did have pain, fatigue and other side effects associated with both drugs after the treatment, I did not experience any problems during the treatment.
My second treatment was on April 21st and it went well through the pre-treatment medications. However, less than an hour into the first medication - carbpolatin - my body started to move and jerk uncontrollably off and on. It kept getting worse so the drip was stopped and the jerking stopped. When the nurses restarted the medications, the jerking started up again. They did this again with the same results and then called the doctor up to view and consult. He ordered additional benedryl and cortizone but the jerking continued so the treatment was stopped. I now have an appointment with the doctor on May 2nd to see how we are going to proceed.
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this type of side effect during a treatment. Even though I call it jerking, I almost felt as though I was having a seizure. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.View Thread
